I think it’s to try and “rebrand” a series to better attract attention to it, since it’s usually for lesser known works. Though I don’t necessarily disagree that what you mentioned might be a possibility 😮😮😮

Perdido Street Station is the first book of the Bas-Lag series, and each book is its own standalone story but there are threads tying each together. My favourite is the second book in the series, The Scar.

I completely agree on how beautiful the Illumicrate editions of Song of the Last Kingdom series are! I am so relieved I just got to buy book 2 from the waitlist after panicking that I missed the original sale. I can’t wait to receive mine! Are you able to link where I can buy the matching dust jacket for Fireborne? I was (and am still) so upset they never released the hardback in the new cover! I’m hoping for special editions too

Also, can I just add that for being as stunning as they are, The Broken Binding is really NOT cost prohibitive? Well. Not in the SE genre, anyway. I’ve seen books for thousands! Not saying that $50 is cheap, just not that they’re taking advantage of readers, IMO. Full hardback regular books are about $30, and most of TBB special editions are 25-30 pounds. Yes, shipping to America adds some, but overall, I end up paying somewhere around $50 for them. That’s not bad! A beautiful, signed special edition, plus international tracked shipping for $50. Love them, they have my business forever!

Owlcrate Adult books have been really good! I don’t think the special editions are as pretty as some of the other boxes but the selections are top notch and most of them are signed!

I’ve been waiting for the paper back as well because same as you I want them all to match so I am happy to see it’s finally out in paperback. So many pretty books! I don't have any subscriptions, but I've bought a few general sale special editions and Broken Binding has definitely impressed! I'm waiting for Illumicrate to do a special edition of Abhorsen to complete the trilogy 🤞

I just bought a beautiful sprayed edges hardback edition of Sunbringer by Hannah Kaner, and I wanted to get the sprayed edge version of Godkiller to match but I can only find the standard hardback. I settled for that, so at least I have them both but if they ever release a set for the trilogy (when the third book is released) I might have to buy it. The cover art is SO beautiful for both books so far.

Owlcrates quality is really superior to some of the other boxes. Owlcrate has head and tail bands with ribbon book marks a lot of the time as well. In particular I have found fairyloots quality really poor recently. Books feel cheap and poorly glued together.

I think all these different boxes are definitely giving each other incentive to really do their best, and to try and stand out. Completely agree about Owlcrate’s quality, at least from the books I’ve gotten 📚

One I used Pango bucks for (basically “store credit” on the Pango app) and for the second, to make sure I didn’t have to buy it second hand for an increased price, I got an owlcrate subscription for a couple of months. I was curious to try out their regular subscription anyway, so it was a win win :)

Sorry to bother everyone but I'm trying to find a book. I'm pretty sure Elliot spoke about it either earlier this year or last year but it involved a young hero/chosen one but he wasn't very good and an older lady was the mentor/reluctant teacher (I think she was super skilled herself).
