Adding this to the TBR, thank you Louise! I have a 1 year old son and I know it’s all a long way off but I worry about the impact the internet will have on him as he gets older and what dangerous rabbit holes he could slip into with me being completely unaware of what’s going on. Hopefully this will give me an insight and perspective

It’s certainly a worry and not easy to navigate. Keeping yourself informed and accepting that our children’s world is very different to our own is key, I think. 🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚💛💛💛

Oooh what a rave. The cover does catch your eye doesn’t it? Ben Reads Good has recently given this some praise, now with your thoughts I’ll have to get my mitts on it at some point. Maybe paperback, he’s put himself on a hardback ban… until he’s read lots that he has on his shelves.

You certainly did convey your enthusiasm Louise. I just borrowed a digital copy from my library. I'm not very good at reading ebooks though - too busy with audiobooks and hard copy books to remember that there are ebooks.

I could just about recognise it from the thumbnail, and I’m so glad you enjoyed this one! I thought it was great. And the ending was excellent. Particularly the way the delusion was completely shattered by the other guy across the road (the most non-spoilery way I can describe it 😂)

Sounds like a thought-provoking read. Now on my list! Is reminding me of another novel with a gaming theme i read recently - Tomorrow and Tomorrow i think? I know nothing about gaming but it’s good to dip in to different worlds. Am currently reading Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day by Winifred Watson - I enjoy a lot of the Persephone publications and this is one of their editions. Loving it. Happy Reading!

This sounds like a fantastic read! This is on my TBR but had forgotten about it. Thanks for reminding me! Sounds a bit like Zadie Smith's White Teeth with many more things happening.

You are piquing my interesting. That sounds like a book that I would enjoy. Does not look like my library has it on stock, so I would have to purchase it. Speaking of, I just received a box filled with books today. I was looking to purchase something that my library did not have and found that my bookstore was having a big summer sale. Paperbacks at 3 for $12 CAD, and non-fiction at 3 for $18... I could not resist. The two that I'm most looking forward to picking up right now are Meet Me by the Fountain: An Inside Story of the Mall (Alexandra Lange) and The Dallergut Dream Department Store (Miye Lee).

Sounds similar to About a Boy and Slam by Nick Hornby, enjoyed those, so I'll place on the radar. I'm reading Never by Ken Follett, The Green Hat and The Edwardians.

Think it’s much tougher and more hard hitting than Hornby. 🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚🩵🩵🩵

This sounds like a remarkable novel for UK readers, I don't know if it would have the same effect on international readers though, because of the location and plot.

Hi Louise I've just read this too and like you thought it was outstanding and it has stayed with me. Thanks for your review as I think this book deserves more attention. I thought the journey of each of the protagonists was very authentic and written incredibly convincingly. I found the ending really tense and moving - I particularly enjoyed the vulnerability shown in David. Also I liked the ambiguity of the voice calling out to him - real or in his head? 🤔
