Yeah, I read this one fairly recently too. The book is a total knockout. So good. Loved the camera pan thing he did. Great writing.

I liked that it was short and sweet, but hated the fact that none of the stories ultimately connect at the end.

Most Murakami books are like this. He never clears stuff up you end up very confused but thats whats special about him. If youre a fan of Magical realism you should read Kafka on the shore. Though my favorite one of his has to be Norwegian Wood. It doesnt involve any surrealism or magical realism but its so melancholic and so special I cant even.

Thanks for the review. I grew up in 60s/70s Tokyo following his work from the very beginning and not too impressed by his first two novels. But when I read the 'Wild Sheep Chase', my goodness I was hooked. So that one was my general recommendation to people as a gateway to the Murakami world. Now I say 'After Dark'. It's a gem.

Yeah definitely. After Dark is amazing.

I think the word you were looking for at 0:43 was aperitif which is a French word that describes an alcoholic drink taken before a meal to stimulate the appetite. In food terms it's like an hors d'oeuvre.
@LandonA5 жыл бұрын
Haha thanks Sarah. I'll be sure to use that word next time lol.

After dark was my first Murakami book and it's definitely my favorite. It's a book that lacks many of Murakami's pitfalls - none of his unnecessarily weird and awkward sex scenes with the protagonists, a lot less creepy stuff conveyed in a positive or neutral light, no overly pretentious self-absorbed but still 2 dimensional protagonist. and the non realistic parts are extremely vague. AND THE CAMERA THING IS SO TRUE.

My first two murakami novels were after dark and Norwegian wood in that order as well. AD is definitely my favorite.

Freakin love your videos. Question: I have to travel a lot, and sometimes I’m forced to leave my current read in my hot car. What would you recommend to put my book in to protect the book from heat?
@LandonA5 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't recommend putting a book in a hot car but if you have to I'd cover it with something keep something cool running. Thanks for loving my videos.

Is norwegian wood better than after dark?
@LandonA4 жыл бұрын
In my opinion yes, though After Dark is a great novel, Norwegian Wood is just a bit better.

Murakami may be the fine wine before dinner, and Stephen King may be the main course meal, but VIKTOR WOLFE is the FUCKING VORACIOUS DESSERT!!

The only part I didn´t like was that the story of the man who hit the prostitute took us to NOWHERE. The rest is really beautiful.
