The audible version is A plus. My all time fave narrator. He nails the characters, especially James. Worth the listen.

Read this series in the 80’s while in college. Loved it and it always stayed in my mind. I recently repurchased it. I plan to reread this year.

Awesome. I've just bought this on Kindle then I saw this review. Looking to get into McDowell and this looks like a perfect start.

The most brilliant thing about this book to me is how much Miriam and Lyla are like Elinor, despite being deemed unlike Elinor because they do not transform. In personality, perspective, and matter-of-factness, Miriam and Lyla are mirror images of Elinor. Elinor does what is practical for an apex predator and Miriam does the same but in the human arena. Lyla looks like she'll do likewise.

Fantastic review. I agree with everything you said. I hail from the UK, but love Southern Gothic - it takes me to another world. May I recommend another wonderful disquieting SG novel? All Heads Turn When the Hunt Goes By by John Farris. All the best.

It's definitely very creepy and atmospheric. I've seen Dark Water too (both the Japanese and American versions). Not sure if you've heard about the case of Elisa Lam but after reading that story and thinking about Dark Water it gives me the creeps haha. Nice to meet you too! Always love making new bookish friends :)

I got this one as an audible 2 for one credit deal thinking it would be a thriller as I read/listen to a lot of steven king. It wasn't what I expected, I was thinking Eleanor would be terrorizing the town, but the little day to day drama of the characters was really interesting and I'm glad I checked it out.

It’s my favorite series of all time. I just finished it and I can’t stop thinking about it. And being an avid book reader yourself, can you recommend any other novels that are similar? I really loved the characters, and the functional historical aspect of the town. Are there any other semi-spooky novels that sucked you in like this story?

I read the two- volume Avon hardback edition a few years ago and really enjoyed it like you said its an epic. It's one of my favorite books of all time in any genre. Been wanting to reread it again and your great review makes me want to more than ever. I'm currently reading Thomas Tryon's The Night of the Moonbow (page 84) and enjoying it. Have you read any of his books? Just subscribed so keep up the good work.

Thank you so much! I hope you get a chance to revisit it :). Oooo yes I have read some Thomas Tryon. I've read Harvest Home and The Other but I haven't read any of his other work. I'm currently looking into The Night of the Moonbow. Are you still enjoying it?
@horrorreader18694 жыл бұрын
@@taylortalkstales8106 Just finished The Night of the Moonbow really enjoyed it. Its a coming of age tale set in the summer camp of boys in 1938. At first, it reads like an adventure tale then it delves into psychological horror until its exciting climax. Next up I'm going to read Savage by Richard Laymon. Have you read any Laymon? Do you think his books have to much sex and violence?

Totally agree. Can’t stop thinking about events and characters years after reading it. The author was gay I believe, so it comes from experience- though even in the early 80s, it was hard to come out even in the big cities, but in the Deep South you could be run out of town or lose your job etc
