I had a lot of issues with this book. For something that is supposed to be the end of an arc that was promising to give closure, a lot of characters did not get conclusions that would make the wait easier. I get that there will be 5 more books, but we kinda need to wait for 6-8 years before getting part 6 and a lot of characters did not get a resolution for this arc. Middle chunk of the book felt like a chore and constant switches between POVs is disorienting for the lack of better word. Pacing really decided to skip this Dragonsteel Nexus. The usage of modern terminology did not ruin my immersion (benefits of not having English as a first language), but questionable character decisions did. Humor is also hit and miss, but it is given with Brandon so I let it pass. And my hot take for this book is that there is too much action, to the point where I was glad to see characters having a simple conversation in a peaceful environment. With that said, I cannot dislike this book. It still has a lot of elements that made me fall in love with Stormlight archives to the point that even the flaws are something that I easily accept. No series is without issues and this one is going to be massive. Give it 2 more books after 10 years and everyone will be fondly remembering this one. Heck, I was not a big fan of Oathbringer due to the "a lot of fucking around in order to find out" in first 2/3 of the book, but I still have only positive feelings about it. And to conlude this comment, here is the summary of one specific plotline that I came up with during the epilogue of WaT: "Maybe Wandersail was the friends we made along the way"

The lack of conclusions for most of our characters was a hard ending to agree with. Then how one or two of our characters ended felt wrong, like they deserved better to me. As for the amount of action it could be a bit much. For some of it I understand he was trying to show us how grueling it can be but then it would just feel like I'm reading the same parts I had already read as well with its repetitive scenes.

For me its the worst cosmere book, i dislike it so much i'm not even anxious for book 6, which i suppose is a blessing Apart from Adolin's storyline nothing worked for me, not one emotional bit I think all the revelations destroyed the mystery of roshar, a lot of it i thought the hints were a lot better than the revelation, which added very little for me I dont wanna keep complaining but i really wanted to like this book, but it felt so pointless to me D:

I can see your points on the revelations, its almost like a don't meet your idols thing. For a few of them it was interesting to see the forgotten history of Roshar but others led to just being disappointed with character decisions.

The writing was a step down for Sanderson. The use of modern words and phrases broke immersion for me. Certain pieces read like the Sanderson I remember. Some of it felt really bad writtwn. The prose, the way Sanderson was putting these sentences together felt very YA. Like elantris or first mistborn. While SA had been, to me, much better written. The action, the emotional punches and plot were still amazing. Sanderson has always been great at that. Just his writing seems not as good since ROW. Idk if it's his breakneck pace he now has for himself.

@@undbiter65 I'm really bad at noticing wording like that. My brain just seems to glance over it as normal I guess. There were a few of the characters arcs seeming to have that YA feel with development and emotional circles they went in. What I found odd was that the romance subplot seemed to be a lot more in this book than the other SA.

@BookedPanda yes. I could have done with out the romance subplot. Or if it was in RoW instead of here. 🤔 still insane. I read TWOK in 2012 or so. Feels like an end of an era. The scope of what Sanderson is doing is insane.

I agree with all of that. I will go a step further and say that I think the writing in WaT was worse even than Elantris. I'd never really had any issues with his prose before. I thought maybe that was because I usually listen to the audiobooks, but I didn't do that with Elantris and still loved it. The story was great, and the stakes were high (they especially felt high for Adolin, which made his arc my favorite). But the prose was clunky and immersion breaking.
