My childhood wasn't great. My mom suffered with Bi-Polar disorder and could be mentally and physically abusive, but not to the extent of the boy in these books. I don't know how parents can treat their kids this way. He's lucky to be alive due to the abuse. He's lucky he got away from her when he did. I hope his siblings also survived her. My dad never stood up to my mom either and people weren't aware of the way she treated us. My mom and I have a good relationship now. Mental disorders can be very hard on a family.

I am with you, I'm not sure how parents (anyone really) can treat people so horribly! Sorry to hear about your childhood but so glad to hear that you have a good relationship with your mom now. I smiled when I read that because I had just recently watched a video where you were hooking up with your mom on the computer to spend time together. :-)

Oh man, our school made us read these because the guy who wrote them, came as a motivational speaker. It was scarring but the books are so well written and you really feel for this kid. I was so happy to see him so happy in real life after reading these. That might be why I was left with a different opinion, because I got the motivational happy resolution in real life that I forgot was never resolved in the books.

Best way to put it. Sad but yet interesting. Interesting for me because thankfully I have never had to experience what the author went through so it was a different aspect of life for me, which I find interesting.

I was nosing around online about this author that wrote the books about his traumatic chidhood, his brother also wrote a book and then claimed that this author was trying to ride his coattails of success. Sounds messy!
