One series (or rather, duology) I'm not planning on continuing would be Alex London's Proxy series. I absolutely ADORED Proxy - it's one of my all-time favourite books, and even though the ending of it completely tore my soul to shreds, I recognize that it was completely necessary and a beautifully written ending. It was the best way to show just how much Knox had grown over the course of the book, but since he was my fav character, I actually have zero interest in the sequel.

My 5th Wave school book report: I recently read the 5th Wave Trilogy by Rick Yancey. These three books are about a dystopian future where aliens descend to Earth leaving the last remaining humans to fight back. I enjoyed this book for the most part, because the characters felt very real, and the premise of the story was pretty interesting. What I didn’t like though, was the ever-changing rules about the aliens. At any given time, the reader knew basically nothing, and when they thought they knew something the book would then say it was wrong or not the full picture. We start the first book thinking these aliens have descended to Earth and have disguised themselves as humans, then we learn that the aliens downloaded themselves into human minds, being both human and not. Then, we find out that these “aliens” were just humans who thought they were aliens, and the real aliens were nowhere to be found. This wouldn’t be too bothersome except for the non-existent foreshadowing to these plot points, the reader is presented with a fact, which becomes a lie, then they are presented with another fact, which becomes a lie, repeat. The second book, The Infinite Sea, is my least favorite of the trilogy for this reason. It doesn’t have its own story like the other two books do. Half of the story is devoted to a few days with most of the characters doing basically nothing, ending up in the same spot they began in, except some people are dead. The other half of the story is where everything you thought you knew gets retconned out of existence by the character of Vosch. Vosch is the best part of The Infinite Sea. He’s always calculating, plotting and trying to manipulate Marika. He asks questions that get you thinking about life, society and the story. This half does set up the last book, by building up Marika, but her whole journey is revealed to be a lie, and she ends up where she started by the end. Now on to the first book, The 5th Wave, which is my favorite in the series. We start by meeting Cassie, who recounts what has happened in the past, and how she got there. This first part is very interesting and always has you waiting for more. Then we switch perspectives to Ben, who is in a camp of survivors, he ends up going to this camp called Camp Haven, where he meets Cassie’s brother, connecting the perspectives. Then we find Cassie in a guy named Evan Walker’s house, he ends up being one of the aliens in disguise. This twist, though, is set up with interesting details. Now we see that the story has an overarching goal, which is for Cassie to reunite with Sam, her brother, who was taken to Camp Haven. Ben is now part of a squad in Camp Haven, and goes on a field mission to take out “Teds”, people infected with an alien virus. We then find out that Ben was manipulated into working for the real aliens, and the Teds are just people. This is the titular 5th Wave, people being sent out to kill other people until no one remains. Now Ben has to rescue Sam, who is still at Camp Haven, which Cassie is doing too. So they end up meeting and finding Sam, with Evan destroying Camp Haven in the process. This book is my favorite because it has its own story which also builds up the greater narrative, and the mysteries and reveals in this one feel more real when they haven’t happened 50 times. Finally, there is the Last Star, the last book in the series, where the characters are given four days to stop the aliens from blowing up every city in the world. Giving the story an overarching goal to move on from the set-up of the last book. There we see the characters fight off the remaining aliens and stop the imminent destruction of the world. Finally, I will talk about the characters. First is Cassie, the self-described last historian, on a mission to save her brother and the Earth, before eventually sacrificing herself to save everyone else. Then there’s Ben Parish, a high school jock nicknamed “Zombie”. Finally there’s Marika AKA Ringer, strengthened by the very beings she hopes to destroy. These characters are very real, and feel like actual humans with emotions and goals. Ben would never break a promise. Cassie would put Sam above everything. You can tell what each character would do in any situation once you get far enough into the story. Overall, the series was enjoyable, except for some major flaws in the second book. I wouldn’t skip the second book as it does establish some things in the final book. The characters are fun and interesting, the story is enjoyable, but ever-changing. The first book is my favorite, but the third one is also quite good.

I read the first two books of the 5th Wave trilogy, I loved the first book! The second book was just okay. I think the biggest problem with it was that every chapter or every other chapter the point of view would change but there was nothing there to indicate that it had changed. I ended up skimming A LOT because every chapter I would want to know who's pov i'm reading, so I'd look for their name or dialogue indicating the change. I really think that's what turns people off the most to the series, it's what gets confusing, at least to me it did.
@JasminFlower4847 жыл бұрын
I actually felt the same way about the fifth wave. It was just so long to me and I just couldn't finish when I wanted to. However that's where the similarities end. I did pick up the infinite sea and ended up loving it.
