Lucas no it doesnt matter where im reading. she'll get mad if shes walking by a room im in and hears me laughing. Its not like i ever sit down next to her while shes doing something, crack open my book, then proceed to yell at it for 10 mins straight. I seclude myself and she'll interrupt me, come into the room im in just to tell me "it isnt real". Or ill be crying-silently- and she'll tell me to get over it, or ill just say "awww!" when something cute happens and she'll scoff at me. (The only time its warrented is sometimes i do laugh against my will reading in bed when shes trying to sleep lol so yes in that case she would have a reason to be mad). But she goes out of her way to make me feel bad about something that makes me happy even when its not disrupting her at all. She honestly just doesnt understand why i like to read

One time I made a KZbin comment saying I was looking forward to reading a certain series, and someone (FOR NO REASON) responded with a long list of characters who died. I like "hate-reading" cause I feel like I already started a book and putting it down is wasting my time (even tho Im completely wasting my time reading it ik). And if someone asks in the future about said book, I could give them an honest review about it instead of saying "I stopped half way through cause it was bad" but instead I can be like "it's bad because..." 🙃🙃🙃

yeah, i didn't necessarily mean if you're hating a book you should put it down, because obviously books i've read where i didn't like the first chunk of the book, but the second chunk of the book redeemed everything. i think i was more getting at people who like go into a book knowing they're going to hate it & they hate read there way through the whole thing. does that make sense? i totally get what you're saying though!

Valaeth Artist I'm the same way. Once I get into a book, I want to finish it no matter how I feel about it. Like you, that way I can have a full review of the book and can give an honest reason why I didn't like it. Plus, sometimes books have slow beginnings or a bad scene or two but get better.

That is so true!!! Like, sorry to all those Twilight fans, but im a Twilight hater and i read the series just so if someone is like "Twilight is better than Harry Potter!" (Im a #potterhead) i can be like no and this is why..... ( the first thing i usually say is Edward is 100 and something years old and Bella is like 17. Then i go on and on about how wierd i find it that vampires SPARKLE in the sun!! Like shouldn't they just burn into ashes and DIE!!!)

I remember one time I was at the library and they had a display in honour of the 20th anniversary of the first book, and people got to write what the books meant to them. A lot of people were idiots, and were writing things like RIP this person or That Person dies. I luckily had read all the books, but I had to try and make sure my sister didnt see because she hadn't, and let me tell you, it is a little hard to cover up a whole wall lol

The « hate reading » thing I kinda get it. I don’t go into a book knowing I won’t like it but when I start a book I don’t enjoy, I need to finish it just to see if the reasons why I don’t like it will disappear even if it rarely does.

So I was in the girls washroom in school, and I had kept my book Queen of Air and Darkness on the (dry part of the) counter. A girl who was talking to a bunch of other friends asked who was reading that book, and I replied that it was me. SHE SPOILED THE WHO BLOODY BOOK!! Also my best friend was reading a book earlier in the same series (City Of Glass) and she spoiled it for her too. Lord of Shadows was spoiled for me too, by another classmate by telling me who dies. Another thing I don’t get is why people ask “can I spoil that book for you?” Like seriously?? Obviously you can’t! Another friend of mine read the entire plot of City of Ashes to spoil it for my friend mentioned earlier who was reading city of glass. Also some people ask “why do read such big books when you can just see the movies/tv show??” It’s pissinggg. Also some people distract me when I’m reading so that I stop reading and talk to them. I get it, they want my company, but can’t they see I’m reading?? Sorry this comment is so long I just had to say all that. I know it’s confusing and doesn’t make sense.

I used to "hate" read the acotar series by sarah j maas but then i realized, reading an 800 page book because you "hate" it is just not possible. i was super invested man, and i was definitely not "hate" reading those books at all lol. now i just embrace it and accept that i'm trash for the acotar series and will read any subsequent novella that comes out like the trash person that i am

I never openly judge or shame anybody for the books they like but I do set my level of friendship with people a bit based on their fav books, like if somebody likes many books that I personally find to be offensive I do adjust how close that person can get to me...like it's not pure judging or anything but I think your fav books also says a lot about your character. But again I never shamed or talked down anybody for their book tastes

Oliver Kelsey I dont actually ask for them or something, but i do like to read the last sentence, or the last paragraph (thats just exciting. and the last sentence rarely gives away a lot) and it never ruins a book/movie for me if i know something happening. Actually in one movie i knew how a character was supposed to die and everytime they did the thing i was super engaged like „Noo, this is too early. is it happening now? Whew, they made it.“

My bff and I was reading the same book, I began reading it because she was saying so much positive things about it, and (because I’m a lot faster at reading than she is,) we got to the final chapter of it at exactly the same time. Then my mom and I was on a trip to see our family on the weekend. On Monday morning she tells me that she fished the book. And guess what? She spoils the ending. I was so angry at her, because I had told her I didn’t want to get spoiled, but she just spoiled me anyway.

Same! My favourite author is Algernon Blackwood, who wrote supernatural stories (including some great horror tales) back in the early 20th century. He's easily the most talented writer I have ever read, but almost nobody talks about him. It makes me kind of sad that people would rather just grab whatever book everyone else is reading than look for something a bit different. If you look beyond the bestseller list, you can find writers who really connect with you!

An extension of the people who 'hate read' books.. I totally agree, but I also don't understand people who are aware they aren't going to like the book but read it and then go and troll the community of people that love the book and either a) post spoilers of major plot points or b) attack other people's feelings about the book just because they don't like it and it's an otherwise very popular franchise. It's a-okay not to like a book and to have your own opinion of why you didn't like it personally, but don't deliberately do it just to have ammunition against those people that do... rant over :D

I do sometimes read books that I think I'm not going to enjoy for two reasons ; the first is simply that I might be wrong, I find that books are often surprising and I actually think that none of my favorite books have very interesting synopsis, the second is just that I find it interesting to try to understand why I don't like a book, be it the characters, the writing or whatever so I'll know better what to look for in the future but also to not repeat those elements in my own writing. Also I'm like that with movies as well but I really don't need a book to be great to read it, I can always find (little) things I like even in books I hate, if that makes any sense. For example, I absolutely hate The Perks of Being a Wallflower because I find the main character to be extremely biased so I didn't get to experience the world or to think what I wanted of the other characters, I was told what to think and that is something I can never live doing, be it in real life or in books but I still think that the story was good and I know the book helped a lot of people that have experienced the same things as the main character so I'm glad I read it anyway. Hope I could help you a bit !

I agree with all your points especially the judging part. Let people read what they want and you read what you like. Urrrr!!!! I hate spoilers too!!!! And I am also a fan of GoT so I know how it feels to read or watch spoilers without wanting it!!! It's so frustrating (whenever there is a new episode, my priority is to completely avoid social media. That's the only way)!! The same happens with books! I just can't understand.

Completely agree. I'm not much of a fan of Sarah J Maas books and every time I've given her books one star reviews, I ALWAYS get the fangirls telling me to kill myself...like what?!?! It's a book! It's not real! -facepalm-

Same, the only SJM books I really liked were everything Throne of Glass BEFORE Queen of Shadows and ACOMAF. Didn't care for ACOTAR, hated ACOWAR, and yeah lol. Haven't read much in Tower of Dawn yet, but I heard good things and I love Chaol so... we shall see. I've been told that many times too, but I continue to read them to see if SJM improves. Also, I'm already invested in the story, and ToG is gonna end real soon anyways. And I also keep reading ToG because I love a few side characters (Manon, Elide/Lorcan, Chaol, Lysandra). Don't really care about the others, I used to love Dorian and Celaena and I liked Rowan in Heir of Fire but that's it. :/ Yeah, I think a lot of younger readers (12 and younger) probably read her books and get more offended when they realize other people *gasp* think differently! Lol I don't even say anything back at this point, there's honestly no use.

ARGH! I just re-entered the Percy Jackson fandom and I had no clue the Trials of Apollo existed. The first thing I found about it was basically someone a couple days after the book came out saying, "AHHH I CAN'T BELIEVE [PERSON'S NAME] DIES!" Like seriously, I will not be able to relax whenever I get to Burning Maze because I'll be expecting that person's the THE ENTIRE TIME!

Maybe they want to tell the author how bad there book is and if didn't want "hate" they should not have made the book if could not handle it

There's also polite ways to say those things. And the author probably loves their book and spent a lot of their time into the making of it. It's just rude and mean to throw hate at a author just because you don't like their book.

Obviously not. If you don't like a book, that sucks, I get it. So write a negative review on Goodreads, film a review on it, whatever. But _don't_ tag the author in said negative review. Authors know to be cautious when looking into reviews because they know negative ones exist. There is no need for you to make an effort for them to see your review. Because what do you gain? You just hurt an artist, that's it. You might hate their work but the thing is, there's someone out there doing this to authors you love. Don't be that person. There's no need to be cruel. tl;dr: It's perfectly fine to hate a book. It's fine to say so online. But it's not fine to shove those painful words in the creator's face.

I agree with you. I have a friend who is always "fighting" me... because I buy many books. I am still very angry when people say they hate my favorite book.
