Learning about Rob’s sexuality in the show early on led me to believe Adele killed him because she was jealous but I can see how when you know more that it would make it very obvious. Also the high filming angle when Adele was projecting made me think she planted cameras. Fully took me by surprise. I think they were tools to keep viewers more engaged. I wanna say I saw all the clues but I only pieced it together late in the show. Binged the book straight after
@myfness3 жыл бұрын
Enjoyed this review! Perhaps because you had read the book and knew the plot, when they revealed Rob's sexuality early on it may have seemed like an obvious give away too soon. I have not read the book and I actually thought it was good that they gave hints about his sexuality early on because when the final reveal happened it made more sense, you could go back to those scenes and make the connection. As opposed to only revealing it in the end where it would have just come out of no where (if that makes sense?). Like I prefer twists where there are clues given to you before hand that if you paid attention you could have maybe worked it out or atleast when you go back to watch it all the connections make sense. Also, when I did watch those scenes it didn't actually hit me that Rob was fawning over David, I had actually forgotten about Rob being gay by then lol probably because the mentions of it were just in passing. With regard to showing the astral projection too early, i thought that was a good thing too lol but mainly because until then it was so excruciatingly slow and boring that finally it felt like something interesting had happened and the story was actually moving forward.
@bookskywalker81733 жыл бұрын
That could be it! What I liked about the book though is that they hinted at his sexuality but in other, less obvious ways throughout that made the twist more shocking, but still not out of left field! For example, getting the weed from a nurse, but he didn't say the nurse was a guy until much later on instead of when he first got the weed. He also kept saying throughout the book that he loved Adele but not romantically/sexually and that he couldn't quite explain how he felt (we know now it was because he was interested in men). So clues like that were fun because they weren't overt. I also thought the astral projection was the highlight of the book and before we reached that moment in the book, I struggled with my interest in it, so maybe it is good that they introduced it early on in the show, so people wouldn't get bored haha but for me, I really wanted them to be more secretive about certain plot points until the end 🤷🏻♀️

It's definitely up to interpretation, so everyone can have different opinions! I just personally felt it was clear early on. He joked about it during his time in rehab to one of the nurses. And then he also told Adele that he had a sexual experience with one of the male nurses a bit later on. And then all of the staring/glances at David and how nervous he acted around him, just seemed quite revealing to me.

I haven’t read the book...but in the tv series Rob’s book about how to astral project (red exercise book) has pages ripped out at the back...was there any significance of that at all or just the plot taking us down a false route...wonder what would be written on those pages maybe about how you can swap bodies maybe so that’s why it was ripped out. Also there was a bit in the series very early on where they reveal Rob’s sexuality somewhat in how he managed to smuggle in a joint I think...book sounds good from your explanation of it...last point the tv series where louise is able to just sleep when a fire is happening at the end felt to me like a plot hole how was that like in the book? were you also like why and how would that be you first port of action if you see a fire in a house.
@bookskywalker81733 жыл бұрын
Yes so those pages were about astral projection and body switching but Adele/Rob ripped them out because she didn't want Louise to know that she/he knew how to do it! It was also similar in the book. She did sleep outside Adele's house in order to project herself into the room and possibly save Adele. But in the show, I think she first tried to physically break in and save her, and the astral projection was just sort of her last effort.

I understand the sensitivity to animal cruelty. I just wonder if you would have thought that scene or something similar would have helped you understand why David was so afraid of Adele, and why he put her on meds, if you had hadn’t read the book. I haven’t read the book but I immediately wondered if the cat was hurt in the book after the scene with Marriane. Finding out that she had done something that crazy made a lot of things make a lot more sense.
@bookskywalker81733 жыл бұрын
This is an interesting point! I totally get what you are saying! And like I said, I def. understood the scene's purpose in the book (while I hated it), I knew it served a purpose. That being said though, there are just some things that don't need to be explained/shown so explicitly as it was in the book, and so I'm glad they chose not to include it! I also feel like what Adele did in the show (break into someone's house, trash the place, write a threatening message on the wall, and stand at Marianne's door with a knife) is kind of enough for me to justify David's actions?? Plus, we know he had a file folder full of other incidents over their 10 years together, so I think all of that wrapped into one is good enough reason to deem her crazy! Thank you for your comment 🤗
@Teodora4537x3 жыл бұрын
In the book, it makes sense that the writer would use a typical sign of sociopathy/psychopathy i.e. killing animals to classify her as dangerous. That being said, glad they didn’t include it, seeing it is different to reading it and we already knew she was dangerous

Hi, first of all I really enjoyed this video! Okay so what I was wondering: does "Adele" (Rob) leave the suicide note and attempts suicide because she really believes that she lost David or did she plan this whole set up to switch bodies with Louise from the beginning? What's it like in the book?
@bookskywalker81733 жыл бұрын
Thank you!!! It was def. intentional! I don't remember how they portrayed in the show, but in the book Adele/Rob had been planning to switch into Louise's body. He was actually studying her closely leading up to the switch in order to more accurately portray her when the time came! And I think it's kind of suggested in the show? Like how intensely he would watch Louise and her mannerisms throughout, so he could copy them in her body.

I wasn’t sure if Rob was actually gay until the end bc he made a joke about it, but it’s not uncommon for straight men to joke about being gay, so it was more of a “ohhh he really was gay” response for me. I think because you already knew the plot it made everything so obvious, but I was pretty much shocked the entire series. The only thing I suspected from the beginning was Adele somehow knew who Louise was somehow, but I was excited to see how she knew. It gave me something to look forward to. In the book Louise is described as a slightly overweight, chubby, not very physically fit, blond haired, blue-eyed, a bit sloppy (but wants to improve herself), drinks alcohol quite a bit. She's not a bad person she's just lonely and stuck in a rut, looking for friendship and maybe even a good father for her young son Adam, who is also white.

SPOILERS!!! MAJOR SPOILERS BELOW!! IN THE BOOK, Louise is a needy, insecure, divorced, chubby blond-haired, blue-eyed, approx 34yo white woman who is looking for a sort of new start with new friends. Her small son, Adam is also white. (I don't think there were any black main characters in the book.) Adele herself was never actually in the current storyline, to be factual she was long dead...10 years dead in fact. But no one realized it because her body had been taken over by the evil heroin addict Rob! Yes, Adele had been murdered by Rob long before the current story takes place but they showed her in flashbacks as a sweet, naive, rich girl who loved her fiance Dr. David very dearly and also wanted to help Rob with all her heart. Then selfish evil Rob takes over her body and as Adele he marries David (who says to Adele/Rob, "you have changed".) Oh yeah? You betcha! There is only one person in this entire book who is evil and cunning and one step ahead and it is Rob.. He is the most evil, destructive, heartless satanish piece of garbage character ever. And to make matters worse he wins in the end!

I've seen the show get pretty rough reviews, and I actually really enjoyed it. Even though I think astral projection is bogus it was visualized in a beautiful and intriguing way, and though some of the plotlines they were trying to convince us of in the show were obviously meant to set up plot twists, i still really enjoyed the journey. The acting was good and I enjoyed all the little moments. It wasn't fast paced, but I'm surprised so many people found it boring. In the show I just assumed rob was bisexual. I assumed he was genuinely in love with Adele and said he was gay despite being bi in the beginning, then he first fell in love with Adele & later with David & since they were the perfect couple he wanted to be one of them. Might just be me being bi myself so it doesn't take much for me to make to that conclusion.

Oh yes, I didn't sympathize with Louise's character AT ALL while reading. I was sympathetic toward Adele. But I just think that the show could have played the secrecy a lot more by hinting less at Adele's intents. The point of the book is that we don't know Adele is "bad" or plotting something until the very end, but the show was way too obvious with it from the beginning. They made her look so suspicious and that took away a lot of the mystery for me that the book had.

I know you wanted to try to be brief with this, but among the plot details that you *did* talk about, you absolutely cannot brush over how Adele was never adele throughout the entire past 10 years because she was murdered by Rob (you just called him 'another person' she met) ... but he's like... the MAIN, central antagonist in the entire thing! This same evil Rob who is the reason David grew out of love with "his wife" realized he no longer loved him (her... lol,, it gets confusing to type it out, which is why these details are amongst the key ones you should covered over some of the others) and murders and assumes the life of Louise so he can have David to himself forever (or until the next great scam) and keep that dream lifestyle he was always opining over. Yeah, I won't say much more because I know it gets convoluted if you read it, but it isn't that complex if its verbalized.
