@BookandPaperArts Жыл бұрын
Hi Theresa. I actually figured out the hard way that some leaves give better prints than others. The first batch we make is sometimes wonky so I was hoping this would shorten the learning curve for first-time leaf steamers. (Hmmm. First Time Leaf Steamers would be a good name for a '70s rock band.)😺

Those prints are absolutely AMAZING! I even liked the ones you showed last and said they were a bit imperfect, maybe because I do love imperfect things. I never tried this, but I do leaf and flower prints in white fabric. I soak the fabric in simple water and then I make bundles with the leafs and the flowers. I choose the ones that have just fallen from the trees. Specially with camellias (there will be many in November), I get the most amazing (for me, at least) prints. You don’t see any flower or leaf shape, but I get a kind of abstract shapes that I love for my stitching. Anyway, I must try this. I have to buy a pot in my secondhand shop 😉💙♥️💗🧡🖤💚💜❤️💛🌸🌿🌼🌱

@alexandraalmeida3661 Жыл бұрын
@@BookandPaperArts Camellias give a deep yellow colour. But they must be pink, the white ones don’t give much colour, and they have to be picked up almost immediately after falling. Thank you for your timing! It is almost as if you read my mind. A few days ago, I found a box of old dried pressed leaves. I've collected them for years and decided to try to do something with them rather than throw them away. Obviously, using very old leaves breaks one of the first rules of eco-printing. But, what the heck, why not give it a go. I also had quite a time getting alum here in Portugal. I had to order it from Spain 😳Finally, I made 3 batches using your methodology and I am VERY pleased with the results! Today, I went out and collected a bag of fallen leaves (mostly sweetgum) and have everything soaking for tomorrow. Can't wait 😊
@BookandPaperArts Жыл бұрын
Wow wow wow, those worked? Thanks for sharing because I had no idea, but then again I've never tried so thank you, Kathy, for being the guinea pig. What's the deal with alum over here, huh? @kathyfenton9268 Жыл бұрын
Ditto on the alum! I had to order from Amazon in Spain. The poor Spanish delivery man couldn't find my house in rural Portugal until the third try! Needless to say, I am bringing back a supply from the US next time I am there. I wanted to update you on my results. I made another round of prints using freshly collected fallen leaves and the difference is dramatic. Old leaves produce much lighter, less consistent and more subtle prints. I have a side by side photo that I can't figure out how to post - maybe it isn't possible. I'll send it to you. Your methodology produces much more vibrant results but I find beauty from the old leaves as well 😊

Now I have it down pat I really wanted to show it so others don't have to reinvent the wheel to get started. So, yes, cover the pot well and keep the steam in except to check, turn bundles, and add liquid. Thanks for the info and correct way to gather leaves. Maybe I missed it in your video, did you have a rack so that your bundles do not sit in the water?
@BookandPaperArtsАй бұрын
Hi Elaine. Yes, the weird thing is that leaves with the brightest colour on the trees are not going to give it up. Try to find some on the ground that are almost about to rot but not quite. They won't give you reds or golds but you will get a crisp leaf print all the same. As for the rack, sometimes yes, sometimes no. I used to use one, or a veggie steamer, but the last few batches I just let them touch the bottom or my cast iron pot. It is not cured and pretty rusty. The water is still at a low level so you are steaming and not boiling but it does wick into the bottom half-inch of the bundles and creates a dark rusty grey border. At first I was shocked but then I realised I like it and now do it this way all of the time. Hope this helps! Kelly

I have had so much fun playing with this technique. I had pressed a bunch of leaves in the fall and the results have been fabulous and so easy. You said in the video that you posted another video about making a journal with the long papers you printed but I can't find it. Could you point me in the right direction please?

I wonder what would happen if you picked some of the too-fresh, brighter leaves and soaked them - maybe covered -for a day or two? The colour would change a bit perhaps, but maybe could induce it to begin rotting enough to give up some of that brighter colour?

Hi Connie. I do like your resourceful thinking. I think I will try it next week. Shall we compare notes?

@@BookandPaperArts Sure! It may be skewed somewhat by the fact that we had our first killing frost here last night (Saskatchewan Canada). I expect that might make the leaves soften more ch more quickly But I do want to try your steaming /steeping method. I’ve boiled papers before - and the results were fine. But I’d like to try to capture some of those pure golds and reds if possible. And I think steaming with alum might facilitate that. So I’ll go for photo and leaf hunting this afternoon - and try it out.

Beautiful. How much alum goes in the pre soak and also the steam pot?

I don't measure exactly but more or less one tablespoon per half gallon. Start with some warm water to help it dissolve. If you want to read a bit more, here is a post. I hope you make beautiful prints! bookandpaperarts.com/ecoprinting-with-autumn-leaves/

Have you tried using a metal or silicone steamer? I’d so, does that work?
@BookandPaperArts2 ай бұрын
Hi Stephanie. I used a vegetable steamer way back in the day. It does the trick just fine. These days I have a rusty cast iron pot that I use just for ink and plant prints and I like the messy transfer it gives. But if you want a cleaner look, the steamer should be a good option. Keep me posted!

You can also see the first newsletter which is on my site as a blog post. After you subscribe you will automatically receive the newsletter as an email. bookandpaperarts.com/blog-posts/ You can use flowers, I just don't as I don't have time to use all my Autumn leaf prints. Check online and on KZbin for eco printing with flowers.

Thank you so much for this fabulous tutorial! Now, I feel as I can try this too. And, I have an iron pot that I can't use for cooking... 😊 Your results are breathtaking! O loved them all. One question... Do you use the lid half over the pot when it's steaming, or without?
@BookandPaperArts Жыл бұрын
Hi Anna. I actually leave the lid on pretty tight, just checking now and then to make sure there is enough liquid. That keeps the steam really strong and more intense. Keep me posted on how yours turn out!

Sorry just went back and saw you said it does imprint on the material, I would probably need the worlds biggest stock pot though 😮 this has made me do excited I'm all of a dither, being able to bring the leaves inside, and do things that matter with them, and sticks, honestly I think I was a dog in my previous life 😊

Hi Katie. Sorry, I am getting this question a lot so oops. Yes, cover the pot while steaming and then I like to keep the lid on for a couple of hours after I've turned off the heat to let it "steep". Let me know how it goes!

Wow! Just WOW! I wonder, would using a bamboo steamer work? The papers would not have direct contact with the water, so no wicking, but, if using two steamers, one on top of the other, one could do more papers at a session. Also, years ago, when i worked at an art and craft supply store, i had regular customers who did silk painting and they told me that once the silk paints were dry, the fabric was wrapped in paper, then wrapped tightly in tin foil so the dyes were set by the gentler steam heat, but the foil protect the fabric from water droplets which could mar a design. One day, i hope to have the space and money to try and experiment to find out for myself. But, until then i have to ask artists whose work i admire. Thank you!😊
@BookandPaperArts4 ай бұрын
Hi there. That steaming silk technique sounds sound. So simple. As for the bamboo steamer, yes. When I first started making these I did something similar with no wicking, only steam. The trick is to get them to fit in an awkward space but go for it!

Can you use cream of tartar instead of alum?
@BookandPaperArts3 ай бұрын
I don't think so. A mordant gets into the fibres of the paper and helps them grab the colour and keep it from fading. Cream of tartar is not a mordant. However vinegar, salt, rust water, and soy milk can work in a pinch. Try going online and looking up natural mordants for dying and see if it gives you an idea. Kelly
