Literally all of these for me as well! You've actually inspired me to try to reduce my TBR and limit the books I bring in until I've gone through a significant chunk of the ones I already have and watching your unhauls motivated me to get rid of some of my books (just gave away about 20 of them today!). Ive also joined the DNF train. I still forget that I can do that though and for some reason just keep trying to read so I now have a system. I put a marker (page flag/bookmark) at 15% of the way through a book. For 500 page books its about 75 pages and for 350 page books its about 50 pages. When I get to the marker, which I usually forget about, I remember to ask myself if Im actually enjoying what Im reading. Sometimes Ill give it another 15% but usually by the first marker I know if I want to continue. Ive also on occasion decided at 15% that I dont want to continue but I try again in six months because I had a feeling it just wasnt the right time. However thats only happen twice in the last 18 months. I really like my system. I struggle to get rid of books Ive had a long time that I havent read because if Ive learned anything its that I am not a good predictor of what will be a 2 star or a 5 star. So I give each book 15% and then I decide, VERY rarely has a book I didnt like in the first 50-100 pages become something good that Im glad I continued. Infact I cant think of a single one.

I've definitely changed my opinion on recording each book on goodreads as I read it. I did that for a couple of years, but I realised that I was stressing over reading as many books as the year before, reading "important" books, giving an accurate rating, etc, etc. Since reading for me was meant to relieve stress rather than cause it, I stopped doing this. I still put some books I've read on there every so often as it's nice to have some sort of record, but I put far less effort into into it now and feel better for it!

I have the same tbr goal as you and have become more minimalist the same way you have :) I had over 300 tbr books at one point and right now I have 50. I want 20 by 2020! Something else I changed my mind about recently is - having to buy the hardcover all the time. It's actually really hard for me to get a lot of books in hardcover in the UK and before I discovered the book community, I was perfectly happy with just buying the paperbacks and getting hardcover editions of my absolute favourite books that I could then cherish. I want to go back to that because getting every book in hardcover is expensive and takes up waaay more space.
@romana3165 жыл бұрын
Same about buying hardcovers! I actually Used to not like hardcovers because I preferred reading paperbacks. Not as heavy and more flexible. But then I joined the book community and everyone had all hardcovers and I was 17 so I wanted to do what everyone did. But yeah, the UK is definitely not as big on hardcovers. I've noticed a lot f books don't get released in hardcover at all here. And even if they are, once the paperback is released the hardcovers tend to disappear.
@ThoughtsOnTomes5 жыл бұрын

I started decluttering books then, 1 year before my first moving out, but my first move was the most brutal filter, haha :D. One things for me that I did not like at all until 1-2 years ago are books where the cover art does not have a correlation to the book's topic. I used to have to have physical books and that was it. Now I'm a convert to ebooks. I really enjoy being able to read tomes that before were intimidating not only because they were beasts, yo, but because of how heavy they were and how sore my arms would be trying to read them for more than 15 minutes at a time. And I get to have a Kindle which has....a four digit count...of books I can read at the drop of a hat. AND I don't bother my husband when I feel a need to read at 3am and he's sleeping (that adjustable backlight is sorcery). Plus, I'm middle aged so my eyes hate me, and the longer I'm up reading the fuzzier everything gets. So now I'm no longer squinting my eyes to slits and hoping I can make out enough letters to figure out which word I'm reading; I can jack my font up to ridiculous proportions instead. Good times. I have a million first books in a series that I have never read but bought because I want to read them. Have I gotten to any of them? Absolutely not. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Will get to them eventually? No idea. I used to have no problem dnfing books in the past but I'm having trouble this year. I've not dnfed like I usually do. Which is weird because I never used to hesitate to shut a book if I didn't like it. Not so much lately. I've read several recently that really suck but I pushed through them. Hoping they'd get better I suppose? SAME! I've always wanted a massive TBR. But lately I've been thinking of culling by physical TBR. I have almost a 1000 books sitting and I'm not reading them. I'm using my library card like I'm a hermit. I'm taking out 100 books at a time and reading them instead of my own books. I really need to work on that. My biggest problem is I get distracted by the shiny new books that are coming out and not reading my own books. I have this secret fear that one day there will be an Apocalypse and no more books so I don't want to read the books I own for free of running out of books to read. I know that's stupid and weird but my brain still tells that when I go to read a book I own.

What were the books you forced yourself to read this year that you would have liked to dnf? I read 2 that I wanted to dnf as well but forced myself to for a readathon. One was Daisy Jones (I know I’m in the minority here but I just really did not like it)..

I could NOT STAND audiobooks up until like last year, and now I'm almost always listening to one while doing any task that requires less than like 70% brain power. I went from getting through 3-4 books a month to at least 12.

There comes a moment in time when the reader realizes the value of Bookshelf Real Estate. Then candles, funkos and other non-book things are forced to move. By the way, I totally love your scarf!

I used to not understand people who listened to audiobooks. Now that I have a long driving commute to work I get it haha
@ThoughtsOnTomes5 жыл бұрын
haha agreed! I never had a reason to read them. Then I had a long commute. And now I use them for getting ready in the morning and at night, chores, etc.

I've never been able to afford a whole series at once, but as a teen I'd buy the first two or three books in a series, spend all my allowance, only to not even like/finish the first book 😩

I never rated books until Goodreads. As an English major you read and critique books. You discuss them for all of the positive and negative merits, so it was strange to start rating them. I do it now, but I don't take it too seriously. If I have a strong opinion or something specific I want to say, then I will add a review.

I only bought 3 Funkos. I don’t want anymore. I have Harley Quinn, Amy Winehouse, and Eeyore. Im not wasting money on plastic toys. also quit buying whole series as well I read 2 Cassie Clare books, realized her writing was derivative trash, and now I’m stuck with almost every book she’s written. 😕. The library doesn’t want them, and they aren’t worth reselling. I have to give them to Good Will after I spent all that money. I also quit buying books. Thank the Universe for the library.
