Thoughts on Tomes Me too! My library does have many books but there are also a lot of newer books (released in the past 3 years) that my library doesn’t have and it takes weeks after requesting for the books to be available, so I end up buying the books I think/hope I will like. Also, if I wanna read a book NOW and someone else has it from the library for like a month I’ll buy it cause I wanna read it now, not in a month 😩

One of the things that I’ve completely changed over the last couple of years has been writing on books. I used to be the type of person that thought even marking books was sacrilegious. Now I make comments, mark parts I like, and even make fan art in the pages. It’s FREEING 😂

I get a lot of my books from the library and through the Libby app but I use to feel bad about this. I don't have shelves full of books and this use to make me feel like I wasn't good enough to be a booktuber. Since then, I've become proud that I use my library and only purchase books that bring me joy. I still like buying books when I can afford it but I'm okay with reading through the library more than anything :)

I've started only buying books when I actually want to read them right away (unless it's a book I've already read and want to own). The stress has gone down so much! I also used to think it was okay to just buy books for "someday" but now I don't want that anymore. My tbr shelf is still over 200 books and that's not fun for me anymore! I think eventually I want a tbr of like 20-30 books, still a good selection, but something I can actually feasibly keep up with. My goal for this year is to get it down to 150 by the end of the year, and if I don't read enough books then I have to do some unhauling, so I'm trying to just read as much as I can!

I am with you on all of these. I only have 3 pop funkos and that is because they are characters I really love. I have other ornaments on my shelves but they are also ones I really love. My books I only own my childhood books and my collection of Harry Potter books I have donated or sold the rest. My tbr is up to 500 and my disposable income has hugely decreased and as a result I am buying less books and trying to bring my tbr down at the sametime. I am also now dnfing books I am not enjoying too!

Literally all of these for me as well! I saw the title of this video and immediately thought of DNFing books, getting series one book at a time, not keeping books I don't really like and not owning like 100 unread books! I was vigorously nodding as you were listing them and talking about the reasons for changing your mind! You've actually inspired me to try to reduce my TBR and limit the books I bring in until I've gone through a significant chunk of the ones I already have and watching your unhauls motivated me to get rid of some of my books (just gave away about 20 of them today!). I feel like a lot of these are things people go through as mature both as readers and just literally progressing into adulthood.

I'm of the same opinion with my physical TBR. When I was younger I often ran out of books to read so really wanted a huge selection to choose from. Now I find it stresses me out that I have books there for years that I haven't got around to. The joy of book shopping is ruined for me now because I think about all the unread books at home. Ideally I would like to get my tbr down to around 10 books so I always have something to read but can pick up the occasional new book or browse in the library without feeling guilty about it.

Ive also joined the DNF train. I still forget that I can do that though and for some reason just keep trying to read so I now have a system. I put a marker (page flag/bookmark) at 15% of the way through a book. For 500 page books its about 75 pages and for 350 page books its about 50 pages. When I get to the marker, which I usually forget about, I remember to ask myself if Im actually enjoying what Im reading. Sometimes Ill give it another 15% but usually by the first marker I know if I want to continue. Ive also on occasion decided at 15% that I dont want to continue but I try again in six months because I had a feeling it just wasnt the right time. However thats only happen twice in the last 18 months. I really like my system. I struggle to get rid of books Ive had a long time that I havent read because if Ive learned anything its that I am not a good predictor of what will be a 2 star or a 5 star. So I give each book 15% and then I decide, VERY rarely has a book I didnt like in the first 50-100 pages become something good that Im glad I continued. Infact I cant think of a single one.

I've definitely changed my opinion on recording each book on goodreads as I read it. I did that for a couple of years, but I realised that I was stressing over reading as many books as the year before, reading "important" books, giving an accurate rating, etc, etc. Since reading for me was meant to relieve stress rather than cause it, I stopped doing this. I still put some books I've read on there every so often as it's nice to have some sort of record, but I put far less effort into into it now and feel better for it!

I have the same tbr goal as you and have become more minimalist the same way you have :) I had over 300 tbr books at one point and right now I have 50. I want 20 by 2020! Something else I changed my mind about recently is - having to buy the hardcover all the time. It's actually really hard for me to get a lot of books in hardcover in the UK and before I discovered the book community, I was perfectly happy with just buying the paperbacks and getting hardcover editions of my absolute favourite books that I could then cherish. I want to go back to that because getting every book in hardcover is expensive and takes up waaay more space.

Same about buying hardcovers! I actually Used to not like hardcovers because I preferred reading paperbacks. Not as heavy and more flexible. But then I joined the book community and everyone had all hardcovers and I was 17 so I wanted to do what everyone did. But yeah, the UK is definitely not as big on hardcovers. I've noticed a lot f books don't get released in hardcover at all here. And even if they are, once the paperback is released the hardcovers tend to disappear.

@@ThoughtsOnTomes I feel like booktube really influenced me to be more like all of the American booktubers who have every book in hardcover, but the reality is that just isn't realistic or affordable for me as a British person living on minimum wage! I am definitely with you on the "collecting every book ever read" thing... I had this weird feeling that I needed to showcase how many books I read until about 4-5 years ago. I started decluttering books then, 1 year before my first moving out, but my first move was the most brutal filter, haha :D. One things for me that I did not like at all until 1-2 years ago are books where the cover art does not have a correlation to the book's topic. Now I don't mind it at all if it is abstract art or a landscape or something - quite the opposite if it grasps the athmosphere and looks aesthetically pleasing.

@@ThoughtsOnTomes - Sam, imagine yourself in 15 years. You'll still be reading like crazy - it's a life's love. But collecting shelves of the stuff will eventually just become a burden. You will probably always want to read something new, but those times you do want to go back, it will be to a favorite - and I bet those will all be in a library for free or on ebay cheap by then. The beautiful shelves with the beautiful books all properly arranged - they will just end up feeling like a burden someday down the road. I probably have 200 grad school theory books, even though I left USCA thirty years ago. At first they were on shelves and I was quite proud of them. Now they are just in a bunch of boxes in storage. Some I got for free but for others I paid quite a bit of money. And I wish I just had the money back. I know we don't know each other, but I just wanted to give you my two cents worth.

I think my biggest change would be the rainbow shelf. I used to be strictly "organize alphabetically by author, then title, and for God's sake, keep series books together." But I liked the way the gradient of spines looked in people's videos, and now my shelf has been that way for over a year. I don't plan to be on booktube ever, I just like how it looks, and I like the way my books are all mixed up together and combined in ways I never expected. I finally caught up with my physical TBR this year after three years of trying (not because I had that many books to get through, but because I kept reading what I was in the mood for instead of plowing through). I used to have to have physical books and that was it. Now I'm a convert to ebooks. I really enjoy being able to read tomes that before were intimidating not only because they were beasts, yo, but because of how heavy they were and how sore my arms would be trying to read them for more than 15 minutes at a time. And I get to have a Kindle which has....a four digit count...of books I can read at the drop of a hat. AND I don't bother my husband when I feel a need to read at 3am and he's sleeping (that adjustable backlight is sorcery). Plus, I'm middle aged so my eyes hate me, and the longer I'm up reading the fuzzier everything gets. So now I'm no longer squinting my eyes to slits and hoping I can make out enough letters to figure out which word I'm reading; I can jack my font up to ridiculous proportions instead. Good times. And that was a really long way of saying I like ebooks more than physical books now.

I have a million first books in a series that I have never read but bought because I want to read them. Have I gotten to any of them? Absolutely not. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Will get to them eventually? No idea. I used to have no problem dnfing books in the past but I'm having trouble this year. I've not dnfed like I usually do. Which is weird because I never used to hesitate to shut a book if I didn't like it. Not so much lately. I've read several recently that really suck but I pushed through them. Hoping they'd get better I suppose? SAME! I've always wanted a massive TBR. But lately I've been thinking of culling by physical TBR. I have almost a 1000 books sitting and I'm not reading them. I'm using my library card like I'm a hermit. I'm taking out 100 books at a time and reading them instead of my own books. I really need to work on that. My biggest problem is I get distracted by the shiny new books that are coming out and not reading my own books. I have this secret fear that one day there will be an Apocalypse and no more books so I don't want to read the books I own for free of running out of books to read. I know that's stupid and weird but my brain still tells that when I go to read a book I own.

omg the apocalypse thing! lol When my oldest son gets sassy about the amount of books I own I always tell him that in case of a zombie apocalypse I will be able to hole up for years with all my books. He will have to be in charge of the survivalist stuff though. :)

MyBookishDelights Yes! That's pretty much my answer now when someone tells me I own too many books. Oh really? Just wait and see what you'll be saying when TV and movies are no longer a thing. What are you gonna do then? Lol Weird how our brains go.

I also would like to have a more manageable TBR and always be able to read the books I'm excited to read when I'm still excited for them but I have quite a way to go to bring my TBR down and I can't help buying a few books every month x) I get rid of any book I give 3 stars or less unless it's part of series or one of my favorite authors :) I have this free library in my city that is just great so I bring all the books I don't want there and often find others that interest me 😊

Agree 100% on the buying of whole series. Aside from the bookish things, how do you find the texture of the Jeffree Star Liquid Lips? I've been using the LAsplash ones which have cool monster packaging and also i find them really comfortable.

What were the books you forced yourself to read this year that you would have liked to dnf? I read 2 that I wanted to dnf as well but forced myself to for a readathon. One was Daisy Jones (I know I’m in the minority here but I just really did not like it)..

I never rated books until Goodreads. As an English major you read and critique books. You discuss them for all of the positive and negative merits, so it was strange to start rating them. I do it now, but I don't take it too seriously. If I have a strong opinion or something specific I want to say, then I will add a review.

I only bought 3 Funkos. I don’t want anymore. I have Harley Quinn, Amy Winehouse, and Eeyore. Im not wasting money on plastic toys. also quit buying whole series as well I read 2 Cassie Clare books, realized her writing was derivative trash, and now I’m stuck with almost every book she’s written. 😕. The library doesn’t want them, and they aren’t worth reselling. I have to give them to Good Will after I spent all that money. I also quit buying books. Thank the Universe for the library.
