I'm just flabberghasted how many books are adored by people and nobody even f*cking *mentions* that the protagonist is an unrepentant rapist and serial killer. Take Shogun, for example - super famous, thought to be oh-so-romantic, everybody roots for the protagonist who's thought to be such a hero... and the book starts with the mention that he and his men have just spent the past few weeks gang-raping and pillaging their way through coastal Japan! Then they are captured and sentenced to death for this and you're supposed to *root for them to escape...* and I was like "hell no! execute them all, please, and be done with it!" So uhm, that's when I stopped and I will never know how Mr. Gangrape will gain the love of the lovely Keiko-Whatsherface and gain the respect of all the samurai, natirally without ever even trying to make amends for the horrific suffering he's caused - huge loss for me, I'm sure.

Honestly, I am someone that has read both Malazan (at least Erikson's side) and wheel of time (twice because I'm insane) and I have a deep love for both (moreso wheel of time) and I'm perpetually annoyed at the people who say things like "you /have/ to read it to /understand/ fantasy." They're just such an endeavor and if you aren't passionate about it you won't enjoy it anyways and then the snobs will get mad at you for not liking them! I think that acknowledging their influence is enough - it's not like the people who don't wanna read WoT or Malazan are saying they're worthless. People should only read what they want to; it doesn't make anyone any less of a "fantasy fan"

Speaking of which, you asked for recs on early 20th century period magic novels, I'll also suggest Patricia C. Wrede's Regency Magic books here. I don't know if you've read any of her work, but she has always impressed me with really well-rounded female protagonists, and I'm really fond of the chemistry between the leads in the Mairelon books. Her writing skews towards YA and she gently mocks fantasy tropes with good humor. I find her books to be quick and enjoyable.

Also, totally with you on Stephen King (loved the novella for Shawshank Redemption, just loved the film), though I have (mostly) read Cujo (don't recommend, esp for those who love dogs).

I have a hard time with some Fantasy. Wheel of Time and Mistborn are two that were awful for me. It's not fun when you have to force a book down. Great video!

For me the series that are a huge nope to me that come to mind would definitely be Throne of Glass, The Cruel Prince ( like i dnf'd when i saw that carden was just straight up abusive), Twilight, anything Colleen Hoover (like yikes no thanks), Outlander, Illuminae, etc.
@laurakish47075 жыл бұрын
pandamon514 I hated Cruel Prince and ended up DNF-ing it. People don’t talk about it very much, but Cardan is incredibly abusive to Jude and her sister. He’s a flat out bully. Jude isn’t exactly a saint, but I just can’t abide and support a book that promotes a “romance” with so much hatred, violence, and anger.

Such big respect on never reading Wheel of Time... I probably will never read a lot of the popular series out there, and that's at the top of my list of things I'm just NOT interested in. Like, that and the whole Game of Thrones thing can just pass me by.

I have no desire to read the Harry Potter series. I've never seen the movies. I never intend to. And I'm totally with you about The Wheel of Time. Zero interest lol, no matter how many people tell me "I need to" to be a true fantasy fan.

I’m right there with you on horror and Stephen King. I did read and love “Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption,” plus it’s probably my absolute top favorite book to movie adaptation. But I don’t do horror whatsoever! Thanks for the hint about The Diviners. I’ve removed it from my tbr. I don’t even want to chance it

Hunger games series I will never read. And I agree with you that some books are really easy to tell they were written in a certain time. Just read want you want to read people, you’ll have a happier reading experience :)

And I Darken is definitely on my list. I tried to read this a couple of times, once with a physical copy, the second time on audio. I got almost halfway through before I finally DNF’d. It got to the point where I would get anxious just thinking about picking it back up. Very clear sign that it was a book I didn’t need to be reading. The only Kiersten White book I’ve actually completed was The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein, which I liked, but wasn’t like, IN LOVE with. I wouldn’t have read it if it hadn’t come in a book box.

Can confirm that vampire academy is past its prime. The romance was hot when I was in middle school but it's between an older teacher and his student and wOw it gets bad.

Your reason for not reading The Diviner’s has made me want to pick it up now 😂 I’ll probably never get to the Grisha trilogy just because I LOVED Six of Crows and I’m not interested in reading about anyone in that world but them.

I hate when people say you have to read something to be a fan of a genre. Like, no I don’t, I’m gonna read what I want to read and that’s that on that. Life is too short to waste time on things that I just don’t care about. Also, I completely agree with you about And I Darken and the Young Elites. And I’ve also read Richelle Mead’s adult and ya books and didn’t really care for any of them. The characters just felt flat.

Do you know Daniel Greene? He also does booktube but he loves Malazan and Wheel of Time so it would be so funny to see him attempt to convince you to read them just for shits and giggles =)) Hilarious though how the way you described some of the books made me want to read them more hahaha

Got to agree with you on mazalan. Tried the first one and it just gives you no easy entry to the series. Add in how the lore shifts and seems incositant in it and I'm not spending my time on that. Being part way through wheel of time when Jordan died really soured me on unfinished series. I'm probably never reading GoT, kingkiller or the stormlight archives, no matter how good those that are out might be.

Totally agree about An Ember in the Ashes. I read the first one and I enjoyed it when I read it, but I just never felt compelled to continue and I soon forgot most things that happened. So I obviously didn't care that much about any of the characters or the story. Same with Richelle Mead. I didn't like any of her books that I read and I just don't care. 🤷🏼♀️ Sara Raasch is another author like that for me. I've read Snow Like Ashes and was completely underwhelmed and I also read her new book, These Rebel Waves and was underwhelmed. I really like the synopses of her books, but when I read them, I'm so underwhelmed by the execution. So I don't plan of reading anything else of hers.

Awwwww, Wheel of Time was the first fantasy series I read in my late twenties and is what got me into fantasy in the first place. I definitely will be rereading the series again at some point , I am now in my early 40’s 😊 but yeah if I hadn’t read them so long ago I don’t think I would pick them up now. And The Way of Kings is still on my shelf. Gotta be in the right frame of mind to start such a large read. Just working my way through Mistborn as of now. Love your videos and your personality! I started wheel of time when I was 15 and it was one of my first introductions to that kind of epic fantasy. And I loved it so much, but now mostly I enjoy reading them for nostalgia. There are definitely series and books that are done better.

The wonders of the internet. I haven't heard much about Malazan in years, and not much before that. Still haven't finished the first book, but I do plan to eventually. It's pretty good, imo, but it doesn't strike me as groundbreaking, unless you drop it. ;)

I'm not gonna lie, the only reason why I want to read The Wheel of Time is because Robert Jordan is from South Carolina, and I feel like I gotta support a fantasy author from here. It's definitely a series that I'm waiting to read until I have a ton of free time. It will be interesting to see how Sanderson finished that series out.

Wheel of Time, I tried to read it once and I was bored to tears. The Brokem Empire series by Mark Lawrence is one of my favorite series ever but I know that it's not for everyone. It's really dark and gory but so original.

Personally I loved Vampire Academy and it’s stuck with me for years...but I was also in like, 7th or 8th grade when I read it, so I was definitely the target audience. I will say it’s the best book series she’s written, in my opinion. But I don’t know how well it would fare in the modern market
@LovingBeingNatural15 жыл бұрын
The book series I will probably never read is the Nine Fox Gambit series by Yoon Ha Lee. I know a lot of people love these books, but I don’t. I usually love sci-fi, but not this one. I tried reading the first one, but the science based system made no sense to me and I work in a heavy science and numbers based field. I don’t care for heavily militarized books and usually zone out on all the military details. Upshot is that I ends up not liking 90% of the book and I didn’t care about either main character at all. I finally DNFed it, planning on picking it up later. Now I’m thinking, this particular series is probably just not my cup of tea, though I do plan on reading other books by the author.
