In 1979 the US government was officially warned that there was proof that the world was heating. If no action was taken, in a few decades catastrophe would be imminent. The US government, under Jimmy Carter, began to be proactive in its fight against global warming. But Reagan came to power soon and things changed. Denial and greater reliance on fossil fuels became the norm. Now, extreme weather is a daily phenomenon. The writer on ecology Eugene Linden looks at the factors that led to this inexcusable delay.
