BIO FOR RABBI JOE:
Rabbi Joe Charnes received his BA in psychology from California State University, Northridge. He went on to study in traditional Jewish seminaries in Los Angeles, California, Brooklyn, New York, and Jerusalem, Israel, and was ordained by Rabbi Mordechai Finley, PhD, of the Academy for Jewish Religion, California.
Rabbi Joe’s teachings center around exploring both the practical and mystical dimensions of the Jewish faith tradition. He is also deeply devoted to interfaith dialogue and engagement, and has been involved in numerous multi-faith events across the country and in Europe.
Rabbi Joe Charnes is married to his beautiful wife, Sarah Schechter, a Rabbi and Air Force Chaplain, recently retired. They live in the Denver area with their lovely daughter, Yael Emunah.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if other's of different faiths could study and find good and new insights as this program is showing. In no way am I thinking that Rabbi Joe needs to convert and become a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Nor do I feel like there's pressure for me to convert to Judaism. I've learned more through the love and respect from this program and am trying to live my life better so I can love and respect others of different faiths and beliefs! Thank you ❤

Knowing that Lehi and his family were originally from Jerusalem I have always wondered what a Jewish person would see in the Book of Mormon that I completely miss. What a choice experience I had while listening to you Rabbi Joe. I heard my Heavenly Father whisper to my heart in the still small voice that I am His child and that he wants me to give ear to Him. Thank-you for your teaching and the manner in which you teach. It filled my heart with love.

Thank you Rabbi Joe and Benjamin for another wonderful commentary on our CFM portion. When I see the phrase "give ear" I often think of the instruction given by Moses to the Israelites to "shema". So I love that Rabbi Joe slowed down to point that out. This year I felt the spirit highlight to me the language of ancient oath and covenant making in 1 Nephi when Nephi declares to Zoram, "As the Lord liveth and as I live..." A month ago I finally discovered a paper/article written specifically on ancient oaths, and I learned that oaths generally come with both a curse attached in the event that the oath is broken. The curse often encompasses being "cut off" from the land. It made me think of every instance that God promises to the Nephites that if they keep His Commandments they will prosper in the land, but if they don't they will be cut off or they won't prosper. I remember learning 5 years ago that the Temple or mikdash was literally the Presence of God in the land of Jerusalem. That when the Jews were taken captive to Babylon, they wept because they were separated from the Presence of God or the Temple. It made me think of this promise in the Book of Mormon that one of the ways we are cut off from God's presence is when we fail to keep His Commandments, we lose the connection that we have with Him, unless we teshuva and turn back towards Him through repentance. These thoughts have been swirling in my mind the last couple of weeks so it seems so timely and unexpected that Rabbi Joe would confirm these impressions by what he shared today about the promised land within. Since our daughter passed away, I became aware of God's Presence in the tiniest details of my every day. It was another deeper encounter with Him. I knew He knew me intimately, my struggles, my hopes and dreams, I felt His light shining upon me, His love all around me. I realized that though we had suffered greatly, we weren't materially rich, yet I felt prosperous because I felt God's Presence with me, and I knew it was because I had exercised faith in the face of my adversity, and God had blessed me and my family for it. I see our temples as evidence that our Christ is "in the midst of [us]". That Zion truly can be within us, that it can be a physical location, and it can be the promised land inside of the people, individually and collectively. And that when we become Zion in heart, God is able to work His miracles through us, and we can command even the very elements to obey. We're a long way from that maybe! But who knows, maybe that time is closer than we think. Toda raba Rabbi Joe and Brother Benjamin for this great lesson. ❤

I would love to hear Rabbi Joe's thoughts and comments on the names "Samuel" and "Ishmael" in our scriptures. Samuel meaning "God has heard" and "Ishmael" meaning "God will hear." I know there are a lot of Hebraic puns and word plays on both names in the BoM and in the Bible!

Chapt 36:1 Rabbi Joe, I wonder what your thoughts are on Alma using the phrase “for I swear unto you,” just after, “My son give ear to my words”? I enjoy learning Hebrew words and phrases with you! I think studying with you is like rearranging the furniture. As you move things around we regard them again in a new light, where previously in their old space we were so used to seeing them there we are numb to their view. We could not see them anymore. Thank you both for sharing this information. I immediately was reminded of President Nelson’s admonition for us to “Hear Him”. Then the many videos that each leader shared about their personal experience hearing him. The reminder that we are each going to have our own individual relationship with God touched my heart. I was also grateful that the Rabbi shared a little about what they ask for several times a day in their prayers. This is very inspiring content.

Prospering in the land is a direct reference to a promise of the Abrahamic Covenant/New and Everlasting Covenant. It was very informative to be reminded that Alma was asking for deep and sincere listening then to respond to what was heard.

I am deeply touched by your words, which come just as one of my sons, a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has just said to me, Mom, I no longer believe that there is a God, I am now on the right track. It's a new experience for me, even if it can be painful, because our son fulfilled an honorable mission and is married in the Temple, the path he chose today is very different ,but your words bring me comfort “My son” is so beautiful. What you said about hearing the voice first had me think of this: Im a music lover and teach piano. When I listen to a singer i focus on the voice, tone, phrasing, etc. Many times im not paying attention to lyrics. The Lord wants us to pay attention to both! "My sheep know my VOICE"

Rabbi Joe spoke to us in a fireside in our ward tonight. I feel totally privileged and everything he said resonated with me.. I have a deep love for the scriptures but even in that love I find myself doing the starfish (Rabbi Joe will know what that means) He has given me insight in savoring and feasting and a great desire to dive deeper in the word. I came to the fireside with a Psalm that has burned in my heart for several years. I wanted to ask him about it but somehow didnt. What a tender touch from the Spirit was given me when Sarah and Rabbi Joe in parting sang the very Psalm that was in my heart. Thanks to Rabbi Joe and his family and thanks to Scripture Central for this podcast.

When I was young and single I used to love to go to different museums in Los Angeles and walk those halls and take in all of that beautiful artwork. And then often I would go through on a docent tour. I would be amazed at how much I didn't see when I walked through on my own. So I really love these docent tours of the words of the Gods of our fathers and mothers.
