From a reading stand point I enjoy hardback or paperback. Hardback gets extra points for durability and paperback gets extra points for price point. I love hitting the sale tables at BN for the good sales on hardback books they are trying to clear once paperback is released. I’m not typically moved by covers because once I read a book I don’t usually keep it - I rarely re-read a book. Though I do hate re-designed “motion picture” covers. I will always try to find an original cover. Oh - and I don’t buy mass market paperbacks at all anymore.

personally, the only appeal of hardbacks are the aesthetics and the durability. but i dont want to stare at my books, i want to read them. in terms of reading experience, paperbacks are better due to their flexibility. with hardbacks i always have to be a little danty, cause i'm scared i'll rip something. and most importantly, since i want to buy a lot of books, paperbacks allow me to do that without going bankrupt

Paperbacks. I tend to give away real books when done with them - "share the story" with someone else, and ask them to pass it on when they're done - so for sheer financial reasons would prefer paperbacks. But for reading while in bed or something, especially, just TRY Stephen King's Under the Dome or the final Harry Potter novel that way. OMG, though my arms would break, and I'd quit after maybe 10-20 minutes. #1 source for me has become Kindle, NO issue with Stephen King phonebook-sized novels there, but for real books - like you, I've been a paperback lover since childhood. And if you can't wait a year or more to get the book in paperback, this is why God created the Kindle. Another great post!

I have always liked hardcover more just because of how substantial they feel. I ALWAYS take off the dust jacket, put it in the trash where it belongs, and enjoy the premium feel. Any situation where someone would argue that a paperback would be more convienient, I personally will just read on my kindle.

I never knew there are people who prefer paperbacks. I thought hardcover was universally preferred. I never liked paperbacks, matter of fact i HATE paperback books, they're one of the reasons why i stopped reading books and just switched to online reading, because most new books come in paperback. The paperbacks are always too funky to hold in hands, the pages start turning on their own, i cannot position myself comfortably while reading, they don't have a hard surface to get a good grip.. And it seems like it's almost impossible to flatten the pages on a paperback, it's always bent and flappy. The book is stiff, but the pages are flapping everywhere. I can't hold the book on my lap, i can't put it on the bed next to me, i can't hold it with one hand.. Just very frustrating, it's like i'm holding a slippery fish that constantly wants to jump away from my hands.

I’m a paperback girl. When I first discovered the book side of KZbin and started to discover all sorts of books, I would buy hardcovers like everyone else (because come on, most booktubers worship hardcovers) but after a little while I realized that, boy, I actually kind of hate hardcovers. Like actively dislike them. I almost exclusively buy books secondhand so I don’t always have a choice, but definitely I keep a look out for the paperback copies of books I want and books I already love. Now my dream is to switch my whole library over to paperbacks. I love the signs of wear they pick up. I love underlined passages and dog eared pages and cracked spines and coffee stains. I own books because I love them. I want that to show, you know. (Edit - like someone else in the comments put out there, this does NOT apply to mass market paperback (unless they are vintage books, then it’s kind of retro)

i had no idea anyone prefferred paperbacks, i will always pick a hardcover over a paperback. i like the substantiality of them, i like durability and ability to withstand wear and tear, i think theyre beautiful and i very rarely put paperbacks on display on a shelf at all. if i need to be reading out of the house, ill bring my kindle paperwhite before any paperback (and i hate reading a non physical book). ive always just thought of paperbacks as the cheaper last option, always to be replaced in my collection with a hardcover once i have the money. I hate how expensive they are but in my opinion and in my life, a beautiful hardcover book is worth the money and the wait (also a good quality hardcover will last a lifetime if taken care of, and that is a very important quality to me).

I had no idea people prefered hardcovers over paperback in terms of actually reading the book. I love the esthetic of hardcovers especially a shelf full of them looks absolutely gorgeous, but i find them cumbersome to read and just uncomfortable in general. I do have a couple of questions. 1. Do you actually prefer the general feel of a hardbook whilst reading? 2. Do you ever read long periods at a time? I personally can't comfortably read a hardcover for more than an hour, it just starts to cut in your hand. 3. How do you justify purchasing hardcover and replacing them on your shelf if you don't have the money like you said? Reading it is the same (provided the experience of reading them is the same to you). 4. How do you read? I usually read in a sofa or occasionally a chair, sometimes standing up. But never on a table.

How different! In my country, hardcovers are really hard to get, unless it's a classic or a really popular book that will sell no matter what (because they are way more expensive). Even in public libraries, all you have is paperback (most of them do something to the covers to make them more durable). I love hardcovers for my favorite books and classics, but I like paperback as well. What I don't like is badly glued pages with cheap adhesive. I prefer sewn books or good glue that keep all the pages together even if you open the book completely. I also like flexible pages, but those are really hard to find here as well.

Paperbacks are friendly. Hardcovers look down on you. If you collect books, hardcover. If you adopt books, paperback. Hardcover aren't even durable, the wear and tear of the dust jacket makes it look like it needs to be replaced. A used and worn paperback gives it character.

I love paperbacks, I love the comfort and the portability. I love that any wear and tear adds character as opposed to a hardback where like one imperfection and you're like"' It's trash, I can't read this ". I just feel like a fancy hardback is unreadable because ever 2 seconds I'm checking to see if I ruined it. Especially the new matt covers a lot of them have, like yeah they feel good and are so pretty but they are grease and fingerprint sponges. And having to deal with a dust jacket in general is just a pain, I feel like I protect them more than the damn book. Specifically I LOVE Mass Market Paperbacks, they are so portable and have such a nostalgic charm to them. They remind me of the books my Old Granny used to read.

Talk of books from a nice young girl- so welcome! Who says youngsters don't read books? Your talk is too general, but it reflects your experience and preference. Good. I am a reader and book buyer for the last 60 years and I will share my experience. 'Paper Back' is too general a term. There are mass market paperbacks , trade paperbacks, glued paperbacks, section (signature) stitched paperbacks, etc.Mass market stuff is just trash. Trade paperbacks are better- they have better paper, are printed better and more durable. If they are glued, it may not hold for long, but some editions like university editions or Norton editions are quite durable. But you cannot open them fully without fear! Best in a paperback is the one which is section stitched. If you mainly read fiction, I suppose you may not keep the books for long. Even then, the classics are for life, not just read and throw stuff. If you like to keep the books, it is better to go in for a durable edition. Hardcovers combine aesthetics and durability. They have better readability- easy on the eyes. If you read ( rather study) non-fiction, you may like to underline or highlight or otherwise personalise your book. Then hardcovers are so good. There are books you come to often, and they better be in hardcovers. In the beginning, I bought paperbacks ( Pocketbook, Bantam, Pan, Penguin etc editions). But all these books have fallen apart over the years. I have had to replace all the books- but many of them are simply not available now or outrageously costly. [ You cannot get a decent paperback edition of Nevil Shute or Louis L'Amour even now and the hardcovers are not easily available.] If you get P.G.Wodehouse in paperback, and Everyman's Library edition, you will realise how they differ, and even affect the quality of your reading experience! Where I get a good trade paperback, I convert it into a hardcover myself. ( I have done hundreds ). Now, we get used hardcovers online- which is such a great help. Most of them are in excellent condition. I But you have to be careful about so called hardcovers also. The key to durability is not just the cover, but how the print or book block is bound- whether it is glued or stitched. Many so called hardbacks too are simply glued ( eg Reader's Digest Condensed Books or those of Louis L'amour by Bantam) and these fall apart after repeated use( especially when you lend them to friends who may not value books or care to handle them fondly ). Here my advice is: neither a lender nor a borrower be. If a book is worth reading, it is worth buying and preserving. And what better than a hardcover here! Even when you buy softcovers or paperbacks, you will end up spending a mini fortune over the years. How would you feel when all this turns into a pulp heap after some years? So, buy hardcovers, or durable trade paperbacks and get them bound. So your library will grow with you! Remember the old advice of Edmund Burke: Economy is not parsimony. Expense and great expense may be an essential part of economy. Economy is a distributive virtue and consists in selection, not in saving. Economy is spending what is necessary to obtain best results, while parsimony is spending little regardless of results. In the 50s, most college text and other books used to be in good paperbacks. I still preserve my college books- they are still good. But the industry is crassly commercialised now and quality comes only at a price. It is good you are into books. Happy reading!

Hi! I am one who prefers hardcovers for the aesthetic and durability. I do take my dust jackets off because I love how clean the hardcover looks without it, whether a solid color or design! Your edition of 'To Kill A Mockingbird' is beautiful!

My friend only buys hardcovers he usually will take the dust jacket off and put it in a safe place when reading the book but he puts it back on when hes done.

i prefer paperbacks more because hardcovers take up too much space and are not very travel-friendly but they do last longer than the paperbacks especially the spine part

I like hardbacks better because it looks more precious and sometimes antique like leather covers to me, which makes me want to read them even more! :D

I love both for different reasons. I love paperbacks because they give me the option to take them with me wherever I go, as they are flexible and can take a beating, which I don't mind. And I love hardcovers because there are many beautiful editions as you have mentioned, and they are "curl up on the sofa with a nice hot chocolate" kind of book format... I have such a weakness for naked hardcover books too! 😁💖

Trade paperbacks are my now preferred - floppy ones especially. But I don't mind reading a hardback - just needs a pillow to support the book when reading on a couch or in bed. Also reading large hardbacks can give me nostalgic HP feels

I'd love to buy the hard cover books but the prices are almost double. I'll buy the hard cover books due to its durability and I think it worths. It profects the books. :)

But is hard cover any better than paperback? Because I wanted to buy Michael Chrichton’s: Jurassic Park and the price difference was a whopping 500 (TL) which is actually pretty overpriced and I want to leave it on my shelf but for that price I’m better off forgetting about it

I agree 100% with everything you said especially the spines! I would add that since we own a lot of books, and I'm the pone wqho packs them everytime we move, it's a lot easier to pack and move paperbacks from one home to another.

I like paperback…they look more cute I think haha. I like the light weight and more comfortable to read and love the wear and tear. I I don’t like a shelf of hardbacks cause it looks like a library shelf. And hardback using have them sleeve cover and this damage so easily then your stuck with a blank cover…that’s a big red flag for me about hardbacks

When i open a paperback and read maybe a few pages and then close it again, the cover just stays up a bit. Is this normal or are there ways to prevent it?

Probably when you put it back on a tight bookshelf it'll won't be bent anymore when you grab it in the future. You could also just keep it under something heavy.
