In 6th grade, my teacher had a "reading nook" in the back corner of our classroom. It had a beanbag chair, a bowl chair and a little indoor hammock, plus several little bookshelves. During free time, we could go read in the nook. She also periodically gifted books to students for good behaviour. I received "Ghost Stories of Pets and Animals by Darren Zenko." I still have it. We also had a class iguana named Eugene. He had a rotating schedule of kids to clean his enclosure and take him for walks around the school halls on a little iguana leash and I loved him a whole heckin lot. Btw, I adore the intro to the Falalala videos

It personally doesn't bother me when older books are 'problematic' because it's an accurate representation of the time it was written and to ignore that or deem it bad or not fit to read might make things turn around again. It's good to be aware of how far we've come so that we don't go backwards.

I agree but I also think that means that those books should no longer be read by children without a further discussion on why they’re bad. Literature is such an important part about learning history, because it’s how you learn about the people themselves, and how they lived and what they believed. It’s important to keep those works around to further the discussion, and to continue to learn from the past, but if they’re read without guidance it could lead young minds in the wrong direction.

That's so interesting to hear your perspective on 9/11. I was also in 6th grade, live in America and it was a whole thing. We were able to leave school early and my friend's mom took me to my mom's work. Shortly after, we had a fake bomb threat (a kid's clock in a locker, but everyone was on high alert). It'd also so weird to think that kids at a certain age will read this in their history books and I was actually a part of it. So surreal!

I love your "rereading childhood faves" videos. This vlog is such a nostalgia trip! I also got super into mountain climbing and survival in sixth grade (with no desire to actually experience either of those things myself)-- Korman's Everest and Island trilogies, Hatchet, My Side of the Mountain, etc. I was in 4th grade during 9/11 and had almost the same experience you did: I got to school and everyone was talking about what they saw on the news, but I had no idea what was going on or what the "twin towers" were. Then I remember in class my teacher put the news on our class TV (which seems sort of wildly inappropriate to me now?) and she cried while we did the Pledge of Allegiance... It's funny that I know I had no idea of the significance of the event at that age, yet I still remember the day so clearly. The juxtaposition of your wrapping style to Robbie's! 🤣

Yeah and literally EVERYONE was reading Harry Potter that year. Even me who was in college. So yeah, not just people your age. So many people were reading it that I remember it even making the national news about how much it was getting people back into reading. That series single-handedly revived the middle grade / YA genres. When the next books would come out, it was like an iPhone launch. People would literally line up overnight to buy them. I cannot overstate how freaking hyped these books were among everyone in the early 2000’s. It might not seem like it was much through your kid’s memories, but it was seriously one of the most hyped things I think I’ve ever seen in my lifetime.

OOOOOOHHH!! I read both Replica and Animorphs! In swedish! In the translation the replica sereis was litterary called Cloned, so there was not a whole lot of mystery there. I mostly remember stuff from the first book, the fire and her mom saving her, but I know I have encountered multiple Amys, so I must have read a couple. And I loved the Animorphs series. Loved it! Especially the one where they all turn into dolphines. It kind of has it all, crazy-ass aliens, teenage angst, invasion of the body snatchers, fun times with animals, un-subtle romance, diversity and shapeshifting. It's eveything I love! Gad damn, now I want to reread it and I have NO CLUE where to find a mid-90s YA-sereis in Sweden in 2020 O.O
