This is just superb, I've been looking for "new release romance novels august 2015" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Ronaylor Amorous Astonishing - (search on google ) ? Ive heard some interesting things about it and my work buddy got cool success with it.

Hi HI, Just thought I would pop in and say a few things! 1: I do not find every book in this video "problematic" some books I just realized I no longer liked anymore as I got older (and yes, some of them are probs the worst books i've read hence the hate title) 2: The discussion of problematic relationships is a big one in this video. I want to say again I do not think it's wrong for anyone to like these books. Again, for me Personally, when I realized how screwy some of the relationships were in these books I could not get it out of my head and totally ruined the enjoyment FOR ME. I'm just not into that, but that doesn't mean you can't be and authors can't write about it. Also, I do not believe (and I don't think I ever said) books should only have perfect fluffly romance (that would be super boring). 3: In regards to specifically the Bronze Horseman I haven't read that book in over 4 YEARS so every opinion and perspective I have had on that book was formed when I read it 4 years ago when I was 18. Recently, I reread some chapters of the book and areas I once found minimal became a larger issue for ME. World peace, Regan

i think what she meant by problematic is that the authors had written an abusive relationship as something to be idealized by young girls instead of showing them what not to do when in a relationship
@taylormarie5104
@taylormarie5104 7 жыл бұрын
I think what a lot of people seem to be missing from this video is yes, it's fine to write problematic relationships and friendships, because unfortunately that can be real life for many people, but the problem is when writer's romanticize problematic issues. I rarely see a novel with a problematic relationship where the main character realizes the relationship is unhealthy and tries to escape from it. Whether it be YA, adult, middle-grade, fantasy, science fiction--any genre or age group--it's important not romanticize these things because it could give impressionable people the wrong ideals and standards. Books are important. Stories carve us into who we are, therefore it's important we try to recognize these issues and leave the reader with the proper ideas. So yes, go ahead and write problematic relationships and friendships and ideas--I have myself--but do NOT romanticize those elements. Make sure by the end of the novel, the main character and / or the reader knows this is NOT how someone is meant to be treated.

I really don't get the "let's not put this aspect or this aspect in books because it's bad!" Yeah, it's bad but so is life. In real life people cheat, rape, murder and do many more heinous things so why shouldn't we write about those things and explore their many outcomes? There are unhealthy relationships that become healthy because of time and experiences or counseling and there are healthy relationships that fall apart. I understand that these things make people uncomfortable and make people not want to read those books but those themes shouldn't be thrown out and banned because it doesn't portray your fairytale relationship. Of course I'm not saying that you should read and like those books if you don't want to I'm just saying that it feels very "safe space" like whenever I hear people talk like that.

I personally don't/can't find too much fault with The Bronze Horseman because 1- It's an Adult Romance Novel, so it's not for impressionable young minds to begin with - not the book/author's fault if younger folks read it. 2- It's set in the 40's, things were very different and the book portrays them as such e.g a girl's virginity was viewed differently than it is today! 3- The book is set in very turbulent times, thus the turbulent relationship. I personally think the author managed to give the readers reason for everything happening which I appreciate. I also, personally don't think books should be censored too much, or stories "coddled" too much, especially adult romance novels - I highly doubt adults would want to read perfect little stories about perfect little couples. I mean, one of the reasons historical romance does so well even today is because of the "taboo" elements of the relationships. It's shocking and exciting. Unless there's very clear emotional and/ physical abuse involved in the relationship where the abuse is openly glorified somehow, I can be pretty forgiving as a reader. Also, I don't think the portrayal of a difficult relationship is necessarily glorifying it. Sorry about the really long comment.. always love your videos! 😊

It was barely even addressed as being a bad thing and nobody seemed to be put off by it! I hope this doesn't sound condescending, but I'm so proud of you for making this video! I've followed you for ages and I've often disagreed with you on books like this and it's great to see you grow and learn. I know it can be hard to admit things like this, especially if a book was so important to you at one point, but I do think it's really important for Booktubers to address and acknowledge these things! Basically some EXCELLENT character development on your part, good job! ♥

Everyone is cool to have their own opinions, but why is everything 'problematic' nowadays? Fiction isn't there to base your life and morals on, it's there to read and enjoy, maybe learn from, maybe just escape. I'm so bored of everyone deciding they can't like something now because it's 'problematic' (I'm not saying that that is what this video is Regan, I know that we change our opinions of things over time and I completely respect that) But I'm just like what's next? We can't read fantasy because characters murder people and murder is wrong? Or because vampires are against werewolves / faeries are against gnomes / demons are against humans - and we can all 'read between the lines' and see two different races at war, and racism is wrong, therefore these are problematic? We can't read contemporary books from boys POV because as soon as they see the love interest they talk about how pretty they look and this is sexist because we are more than just bodies? No one in a book that is a certain religion or ethnicity or sexuality or from a certain country or gender can possess any qualities that are associated with said thing because it's stereotypical and therefore 'problematic'? Like seriously, where do we draw the line on fictitious stories? Is it because it's easier to police books than it is to figure out the crazyness going on in the world?

Catsandcamera i don’t think stories that cover problematic topics is the issue, it’s the romanticism of problematic relationships and such. for example, both twilight and lolita portray problematic relationships but twilight romanticizes the relationship while lolita highlights the issues of it

I know that the relationship in the Bronze Horseman is problematic now but is it really in the context its set in ? I mean we're talking about Russia at the beginning of the 20th century, the balance between men and women was very different and unfair then. Doing it otherwise would probably have been a little anachronic I think ?

I had the same experience with Maximum Ride. Originally, I started reading the books because my friend said they were amazing; keep in mind that when I got into them, they weren't all out yet. I loved the first three, and felt that they really did well telling a story. But then... things got weird around the second Max plot arch, and got REALLY weird when they introduced that random dude who was like made for Max or whatever. I stopped reading there. I could put up with the random drama in the other books, but that really did it for me. I have fond memories of the first three books, and choose to pretend the other ones were never written. (Still love the series, and the characters. But, honestly, I'll never finish the series).

I think this video begs to question the role of YA fiction in society. Is it the job of YA fiction to instill good morals and life lessons into its readers through the clear depiction of healthy relationships, or can YA exist to show that toxic relationships and mannerisms can exist and hide behind romanticized notions? I personally think a bit more credit should be given to YA readers; I think some YA readers are able to analyze the relationship dynamics within a novel and view them for what they really are. Toxic relationships exist in real life and I'm not sure if I believe that it's the job of YA fiction to teach its readers what is and isn't toxic.I would love to see a video where you talk about your views on this because I know you could make some great counter claims. Love your channel btw (you're always coming out with great content) and happy to see your move went well! :)

hey y'all, Regan isn't saying you're not allowed to like those books and she's not saying books aren't allowed to have problematic elements or should be banned. Don't put words in her mouth - that's such a strawman. There's a huge difference between portraying abuse and romanticizing abuse.

A Twilight reread and review now that you're older should be interest. If you decide on doing it, I'll be looking forward to it. I've read The Bronze Horseman two years ago and loved it, yes I knew that for a love story it was messed up, but I was okay with it. I saw it as a normal 1940's "romantic" representation. Then I watched Sam from Thoughts on tomes gripe on the book, and my perspective change. Don't get me wrong, I still love it because I had a lot of emotions while reading it. Nonetheless, now I know that this book should not be romanticized and, as critical readers, we must now that the "romantic" relationship is in fact an abusive one. I would like to reread it again and see if I still love it or if I would hate it.

Something I have just realized very recently is that books should not be taken as gospel. I used to think, they have been edited and published, read many and many times before they have reached my eyes, so there really shouldn't have any problems. And I just realized after discovering rant reviews, books can be problematic, they can be wrong, and they could impact me in a negative way. As an impressionable teen ( I'm fourteen), my views on the world are greatly impacted by books. I dunno where I'm really going with this comment, but I just hope I help someone realize that books can be wrong before they shape their views into something bad.

It really upsets me when people hate on books because of a problematic relationship, such as being too controlling, etc.. Just because it has some questionable aspects on what a "normal" relationship is supposed to be, doesn't make it a bad book. Just because you or I don't think that is how a relationship should be doesn't mean other people don't want to live their life like that. There is no "right" way to have a relationship with another person that is going to work for everyone. For example BDSM works for some people and not others, that doesn't make it wrong. It is not the author's job to educate people on relationships and how to live their lives. It's their job to entertain. It's a FICTION book. Not real. Separate the art from the artist and just enjoy the book and take the lessons with pinch of salt if you don't agree with it.

I know that the relationship in the bronze horseman has some problematic elements in it, but I still absolutely love that series and romance. I can objectively look at it and go "ok, that was pretty messed up and manipulative" but i still think it was a great story that was really well written. And I definitely think their are relationships like that out there, especially in that time period, so the author is showing a truthful side to relationships, albeit not one girls should look up and aspire to have.

Ha ha ha...when my oldest was about 12 she got really into the Maximum Ride series. I read the first 2 books and only made it halfway through the 3rd...awful is an understatement. She loved them though. Recently she (at 18) stumbled upon a new book in the series that she didn't know about and picked it up looking forward to diving back into a favorite story. She only made it 1/4 of the way in before she gave up, lol. She put the book back into the library back and sighed, "Ok, you were right...this is really terrible."

OH MY GOD I FELT LIKE I WAS THE ONLY ONE!!! In the middle of the first book they have sex and Claire says no, and that he's hurting her several time but they keep going and she ends up enjoying it?? Like rough sex and non-consensual sex are two different things and they seemed to be blurred. When you don't want to have sex and are forced to, even by your SO it's rape... Besides it conveys the cliché that as rape is a form of sexual intercourse, in the end it can be enjoyed

I read so many YA books when I was a young teenager that featured countless broody and mysterious boys and the girls were always fawning over and kept pursuing because, well, they're broody and mysterious and who doesn't love that? I now realise that broody and mysterious is just not worth the time and effort, and I hate that that was my first impression of how a boy should be and how they should treat girls and women. Some examples include Hush Hush, House of Night series, Fallen, Vampire Academy. Loved this video Raegan, would love to see more examples!

I read Matched and Crossed earlier this year, and while I was annoyed with both, I actually liked Crossed a lot better than Matched. Then I started Reached...read only 20 pages and DNF'd it. It's ridiculous that the rebellion decided to show itself by infecting children with illnesses. So fucked up lol. I'm also starting to hate most of SJM books. ugh. I could talk about all the problematic parts for HOURS. I'll decide if I want to continue supporting her after I read Tower of Dawn to see if she's made any improvements, although considering she wrote yet ANOTHER 700 page book "novella", I'm not feeling very optimistic.

You know what I love about this video? Is that we all have those things we LOVED and then we look back and cringe like, how could we not have SEEN that for what it was!? BUT- how great is it that we've matured and grown and gotten wiser and recognize the jacked up book relationships (for example) for being jacked up instead of emulating them?

Twilight was the first thing that came to my mind, too. But not because of the relationship (I always hated Edward, he was so arrogant and proprietarial), but because of the story. I now recognize, that it was quite easy and cliched. And I always ask myself "did you really love a series with sparkling vampire guys back then?" 😅

Any books with the manic pixie girl trope OR ones where the girl needs to be "saved" from her mental illness. A boyfriend will not permanently rid you of your severe depression. He can hold you a little closer and be there during the bad times, but acting like anyone can heal another person or that they are suddenly healed now that they're in a relationship is completely unrealistic. It sends the wrong message to people who don't know more about mental illness and, in some cases, hardcore romanticizes it. In most cases, I should say. And about the manic trope? It makes the girl an object. You don't like her you like the idea of her. That's creepy. And if she doesn't like him back the book turns into a wreck (the fictitious "friend zone") really fast.

Totes agree with Anna and the French kiss! This trope is around more than you think and I actually hate it, it creates a really negative female relationship but also is so unbelievably selfish but always portrayed in a positive light. One for that I loved and now hate... TFIOS... I just find it very pretentious, the same with anything by john green... they don't sound like children and also are very romanticized images of either women or situations. Yes they may pull on the heart strings, but so do many Nicholas Sparks books and they can also be problematic as well...

okay, @people defending problematic relationships in book. You're right. Not every relationship is healthy, and these over the top obsessive relationships do exist. The problem is that books don't portray that as an unhealthy thing. There's a difference between writing ABOUT a toxic relationship and promoting/encouraging it, and a lot of YA tiptoes that line.

i respect when people change their opinions on things, we grow and change and so do our thoughts and opinions. and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. but I really dislike how people overuse the word “problematic“ these days. a book includes an abusive relationship? - problematic, dont read it!! some character in the books is homophobic? - problematic, come on, everyone, hate on this book!! I really don't like this trend. what happens in the book and the “message“ of a book are two different things. labeling a book as problematic just because it includes “problematic“ issues is really bothering me. books are not written to show you how to live your life. if a book character makes bad life decisions and lives in an abusive relationship etc that doesn't mean the book promotes those things. It is important to be aware of those things and to discuss them in our community but this “I used to love this book and then someone labeled it as problematic and now i hate it“-trend needs to stop. Talk about the things that you think are problematic but don't confuse problematic things IN the book-world with the message of the book.

onthebookshelf yeah, I agree that its important to be aware of this, especially in YA books, and we need to discuss those things in the book community :) My point was more directed towards this book-bashing-trend where everything gets labelled as problematic and everyone suddenly hates a book they originally enjoyed just because it is now “officially“ a problematic book. not sure how good my point comes across

My books that I used to love/enjoy but now dislike/hate include. . . 1) The Twilight series. Like so many others, I DESPISED the last book in that series, and feeling that way destroyed all of the warmth I had felt for the earlier books. 😢 2) The Death on Demand mystery series by Carolyn G. Hart. (I think that's what the series was called.) One of the later books in this series introduced cheating into the relationship between the protagonists (I think), and that put paid to my love for that series. 3) The China Bayles mystery series by Susan Wittig Albert. This series also introduced cheating into the life of the protagonist (I think). I read this series not long after (or possibly before) I abandoned the Death on Demand mystery series for the cheating, and between these two series, they killed my love for reading mysteries. 😔😢😭 4) Cry No More by Linda Howard. This book was incredibly good. I can't say that I loved it, but I gave it five out of five stars because *it destroyed me* - it was that powerful. I also wouldn't say that I hate Cry No More, but I can say that I will *never* reread it and it pretty much turned me off of reading any other unknown romantic suspense books, but especially any new books by Linda Howard. And I read this book around the same time (in the same year?) as the two cheating mysteries, so is it any wonder that after I read Guilty Pleasures by Laurell K. Hamilton, I fell in love with the Urban Fantasy genre? It's been almost 15 years, and I'm still oh-so-in-love with Urban Fantasy books. 😁😊😍❤

OMG I feel the exact same way with Maximum Ride! It was my all-time favorite book series throughout my pre-teen/early teen years, but as I grew older and the series progressed, I saw more and more of the problems, especially after reading much better fleshed-out books like Percy Jackson. I still like the first three books, as it feels like a fun, sci-fi, action-packed adventure to enjoy every once in a while. (I personally believe that the series was actually supposed to end at book three anyway, but you know, money money money!). But books 4-9, which is nothing but global warming propaganda, I like to pretend don't exist at all.

Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged. Could have edited the thing down to fifty pages. She just kept saying the same thing over and over. Sigh. Yes, societal parasites can bring down the system. The Great Gatsby. Meh. Depressing. I know I'm supposed to feel sorry for this guy but I feel more sorrow for the lady who ***spoiler**** gets run over. Anne of Avonlea. I thought I liked it , but upon reading it again, I found Anne to be too much of a Mary Sue without any realistic emotion. Anne of Green Gables is still ok. Asimov's Foundation wasn't as good the second time. Two stars. Basically every romance novel where the guy is beautiful, able to do everything, has no sense of humor, just stands there being moody like he's got an atomic wedgie. The woman's only skill is beauty and to be completely inadequate.

Twilight was my post-Harry Potter series. I loved Twilight, thought New Moon was okay, and then really started seeing its problems in Eclipse, especially when Edward became excessively controlling. I remember I had to put the book down for a few days because I would get so angry. The thing that really ruined the series for me was the "climax" of Breaking Dawn (or lack thereof).

It scares me to soon be done with college and become a "real adult" but now it also kind of excites me? Anyways, I wish you all the best with your job and settling into your new apartment :)
