If you love the Gothic genre you should check out Carlos Ruiz Zafon! His most famous book is The Shadow of the Wind, but I personally prefer his lesser known (in America at least, I gather that it's a cult favorite in Spain?) Marina to the point where it's my current favorite non classic of the year! It's like Edgar Allen Poe meets Frankenstein, the Phantom of the Opera, and Bioshock all into one really wonderful book. It made me really want to go to Barcelona, too.

Laura Wachter I've read shadow of the wind and loved it!

Laura Wachter Marina was such an interesting read! I really enjoyed it when I read it about two years ago, but the Shadow of the Wind is my favorite of the two. I'm excited to read more by the author when I get the chance. Any recommendation on which of Zafon's books to read next?
@wormdoodles7 жыл бұрын
A Clockwork Reader then definitely pick up Marina. It's so wonderful and underrated.

The Name of the Wind is so great. It's beautifully written, but don't expect a fast moving plot. I really suggest reading it when you have time to savour the language. I think of it as a reading experience.

Name of the Wind is my favorite book of all time! It's the one book I always recommend to everyone. It is long and a bit intimidating, but once you get into it it's impossible to put down and the pages just fly. If you love high fantasy you will absolutely LOVE it! I'm very excited for you to read it!

I read night film last year around Halloween,and it was the perfect book for those stormy days. I absolutely loved it. I thought it was so well written and so interesting, especially with the news articles, photographs and other extra content you get. I think I might read it again soon. It really blew me away, and I've been looking for similar books ever since... Without much luck, sadly.

My friends ask me how I can get through such a huge book so often and I always point them towards a short story he wrote in an anthology titled Unfettered. I remember reading The Night Circus years ago when nobody really knew about it yet. An Advanced English Lit prof even asked us what our favorite books were and I mentioned TNC, and she didn't even give me a second glance. After that, I thought my taste in books was juvenile siince it wasn't worth an opinion from a professor, and I decided I didn't like TNC anymore. But seeing you and ThoughtsonTomes love it so much made me realize how beautiful of a book it really is and that I shouldn't care what ANYBODY thinks of my reading tastes.
