I felt the same about The Subtle Knife! I just didn't really care what happened. I still haven't read the 3rd one (even though I've read TSK over a year ago...) but I really hope that we both do end up liking it. Because everyone seems to love His Dark Materials!

I waited a long time before I read Fire and Bitterblue because I loved Graceling so much and wasn't sure I'd enjoy companion novels that didn't focus on the same main characters. I was wrong! I adored both follow-up novels, and I think Bitterblue was my favorite of all three. This seems to be a sadly underrated series, and I like to recommend it to people who enjoy books with strong, smart female characters (like Tamora Pierce's books or Nix's Old Kingdom series). It's wonderful to see you promoting the Graceling books on your channel!

I think you really nailed your review for Fire. I think Fire is my favorite in the series but they all had their good points. I think Bitterblue is the darkest book in the series due to some of the topics explored in the book.

It's too bad you didn't like Spinning Silver! It's interesting because I had such a different opinion of it than you--I thought the different viewpoints were really well done and generally really enjoyed it. Funny how that works! I'm so glad you loved Fire, though! The Graceling books are so amazing, and you're really making me want to go back and reread them!

I had the same problem when I was listening to the audiobook for Northern Lights. I drift off and daydream when I'm reading physical books, but that's not a problem because the story stops when I stop reading. It just becomes a problem when I have the same habit listening to audiobooks, because I'm rewinding every five minutes

Graceling and Fire are two of my favorite books! 💕Idk if I can choose between them. Bitterblue was a little bit dragged out for me and underwhelming compared to the other two. I felt like not much happened but I loved seeing our old characters in it. ❤️

Fire was my favorite book in the Graceling series. :) Unfortunately, I wasn't a fan of Bitterblue though. It has a very different feel from Graceling and Fire and the mystery plot in it felt super bizarre to me. I'm curious to see what you'll think of it. Yay, always great to see people gush about the Shades of Magic trilogy. It's so good!

I'm with you, it was so confusing for about 90% of the book. I might have liked it more if it had been a stand-alone but if felt weirdly out of place as part of that trilogy. And Bitterblue felt really naive to me too, especially compared to Katsa and Fire.

Fire was definitely my favorite book in the series. It could easily be a stand alone. Graceling was ok but I didn't like Bitterblue at all, it was sooo slow, and the characters were so boring. Now I kinda feel like reading Fire again, I realy did love that book.

I tried to reread His Dark Materials for the 2nd time by listening to the audio and I couldn't get into into it either and it's one of my favourite series. I'm not the biggest audiobook person but listening to my most loved books is something I like to do from time to time. None of those were multi-cast versions so that's probably the reason why it didn't work out for me with the HDM one.
@littlebookowl6 жыл бұрын
Good to know! Thanks for sharing, I definitely think I'll try the physical book for #3 I also love to revisit my favourite books by listening to the audiobook! Especially for fantasy faves, because I'm already familiar with the world so I don't need to worry about missing any major details.

So here are a few more recommendations, which I didn't mention in those videos: The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo The Upside of Unrequited American Panda

Fire is the only one I haven’t read yet. I hear people reading fire first which seems odd. It makes sense to read graceling, bitter blue then fire. I feel like you will spoil things if you read them in any other order..
@littlebookowl6 жыл бұрын
OIh, interesting! I think Fire should be read *after* Graceling, because it definitely gives some insight into one of the characters from the book, and would probably spoil somethings even though that is the only overlap. But as far as I can tell, there shouldn't be any issues reading Fire before Bitterblue (which was the publication order). Do you plan on reading it? 😍

I think with the HDM books, The Subtle KNife was the weakest of the three. Its a very "set up" book, not much happens and what does happen is just to set up or conclude things that happen in the next and first books. I really struggle with the book, regardless of how its consumed. it is very meh. (imo)

All the cover renditions of the Dark Materials books are so gorgeous, I'm thinking of getting the collective one. I see what you mean by reading physically rather than listening. Spinning Silver sounds unnecessarily hard to read, perspectives are only needed when showing different aspects of stories or arcs so it seems it was just a waste. You have me really wanting to read Graceling so I can get to Fire! "A dick head would be putting it lightly" LOOOOOOL. Sex needs to be a NORMAL thing rather than people going crazy over it or periods being included. In looove with your thoughts on this. I haven't got to A Darker Shade yet but I definitely want to. The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hard castle, Call Me By Your Name were my favourite August reads but I read Strange the Dreamer recently and died.
@littlebookowl6 жыл бұрын
It was so hard to choose which covers to buy, the series is blessed with so many beautiful covers! It was definitely disappointing, I've been hearing so many people reading and loving Spinning Silver, and I agree with most of the things they loved but the perspectives were SUCH a huge hindrance to me 😭 Hahahahahaha, he really was a shitty dude! I love when sex and periods are a normal thing in books. YAY to Evelyn Hugo and I'm glad to hear you liked CMBYN - I haven't read it but might look into it! I think we all died reading Strange the Dreamer, oh my goodness 🤣
