Speaking of Becky Chambers, Psal for the Wild Built is absolutely correctly hyped - it's fantastic

I read Wrong Place Wrong Time based on your recommendation and just wanted to say, thank you so much! It was one of the best books that I've read this year and even it's a Reese pick, WPWT just wasn't on my radar. Thank you!

Last year, 'The Maid' gave me so much grief because I hated it but then I kept seeing it EVERYWHERE. 😂 It sucks to not be part of a popular crowd. Though I agree it belongs to the only acceptable category of a cosy mystery.

I’m one of the few that wasn’t thrilled with Legends and Lattees for some reason. I thought it was over hyped in my opinion. Maybe I would have liked it more if it hadn’t been so hyped. It was just okay in my opinion.

It’s time for the AH (Adequately Hyped) section. Interested to hear the titles that come up.

I'm struggling with The Maid, but not really because of the voice. The autism rep isn't the best but it's certainly not the worst I've read. It just feels like some weird alternate universe where nobody has ever encountered an autistic person before. The copy I was reading had to go back to the library, but when I get it back I'm going to try re-setting it in my head in the 1920s and see if that helps.

The Maid is my least favorite mystery I have ever read, and there are a number of reasons for that: 1. Everything was kinda cartoon-ish, from characters to the plot itself. The majority of the characters were literally stupid and made me feel like they had no clue about what real life is like. Molly was very poorly depicted and gave me the impression that a toddler was the main character. Her personality and traits are not realistic for a person on the autistic spectrum. I also felt like I was watching kid's television while reading, without the entertainment factor. 2. It was BOOORING. The book could've been at least 100 pages shorter. The plot was also so unrealistic and the ending left me staring at the walls thinking: "That's it?". I don't even remember the book having a plot twist at the end but maybe that is because I quessed the ending from the first 50 pages and it never felt like something shocking to me. I am so surprised that Mara likes this book considering that I, just as her, love Agatha Christie so much, and seeing that she felt a coziness while reading "The Maid" makes me question if we read the same book.😂

I'm sure you've heard every version of this comment before lol but just to add my voice to the potential chorus, A Long Way to a Small Angry Planet was my least liked/least fav of that series - and actually my least favorite Becky Chambers. I would be interested in seeing your thoughts on maybe even just the next in the series, but I respect your choice in not continuing 😅

Hello back to ya! Loving the hairstyle today. Listened to Elatsoe and enjoyed it. Interested in FIREKEEPER'S DAUGHTER by Angeline Boulley. Just finished Sisters of the Lost Nation by Nick Medina which also highlights missing/murdered indigenous women. The dual timeline was a bit confusing. I listened to the audio and I think if I read the physical copy that may have helped. I have picked up several of the books mentioned based on your recs in previous videos so I have plenty of good reading ahead of me! Thank you for your thoughtful commentary.

I've read and loved most of these titles upon your advise, many of the others are still on my TBR. I've heard so many people recommend Razor Blade Tears, but losing a gay child to a hate crime is one of my worst nightmares.

I think I must be the only reader I know that just can’t seem to get very interested in Becky Chambers’ books. I’ll probably keep trying. Of your list, I’ve read seven. I really enjoyed: Know my Name; The Maid; Legends and Lattes; Wrong Place Wrong Time; Firekeeper’s Daughter; Stories of Your Life and Others (that one was a unicorn since I usually dislike short story collections!) I couldn’t get into: Sea of Tranquility

I'd put Stuart Turtons's "The devil and the dark water" that you reviewed this year as correctly hyped. Everyone said it was brilliant, but more of a mystery than a detective. And I think that's a very fair take! I loved the setting and characters!

It's hard for me to judge the hype level for Legends & Lattes, because someone I followed on Twitter fell in love with it and hyped the crap out of it in her feed for awhile. Still have to read it. Since I decided to read all the Hugo best novel nominees, that'll probably change soon. (I owned 4 of them, so why not.)

So, the only book on this list I've heard of/read is "The Fifth Season" by N.K. Jemisin. But I absolutely LOVE that book! I sadly couldn't get into "The Obelisk Gate" as much when I tried to read it; maybe I'll have to go back to it. Great list though! I've written them all down so I can eventually make my way through them. 🙂

I am not sure why, but Ted Chiang has completely escaped my notice until recently only to find out he is considered something of giant in S is F. Maybe it is because he writes short stories, or maybe it's because I'm not American, but somehow he is not in the book chatter on my socials. Other internationals might have a different perspective but for me he is underhyped.

Just want to note that Elatsoe is YA, not MG. The main character is 17. It does read like younger YA, true, and I don't think it would be inappropriate for a MG age range, but it is a YA novel and was nominated for many YA award categories.

Firekeeper’s Daughter is tricky because it seems to have been marketed as a fantasy and I’ve seen it shelved that way. When I finally got around to it snd realized it was a thriller I was disappointed.

#Whelmed 😂 Most of these weren't really on my radar, not because I haven't heard of them as I have (most were talked about for months or even years), but I'm not someone who reads YA or general literary fiction-just a personal choice. I threatened to read Razorblade Tears, but it seemed the focus was off the mystery and on the "drama" side of things-not my jam. The Maid was pretty good-not a favorite but enjoyable. Honestly, though I would put it more into the over-hyped section as it was All Over the place for a while. Ditto for Legends and Lattes-cute sure but not to the point where it should be on All the lists. 🤷‍♀️ I definitely tend more towards the Indy authors though too as I think they do tend to be much better than many of the traditionally published ones. Unfortunately, with few notable exceptions (Ilona Andrews) they don't get the love that these have received. (C.P.Rider, Annette Marie, Lindsay Buroker, Hailey Edwards, Lisa Shearin, Kenya Wright, Adelaide Forrest, Suzanne Wright, Laken Cane and many more) But it seems generally everyone "buzzes" and talks about ad nauseum the same 10 or so romances, mysteries, fantasies, etc. It is nice to see channels like yours that do branch out more from the typical ten although I would love to see more Indy things here too.
