I think A24 should make a film out of one of Eric LaRocca's short stories. He has so many that could be fleshed out into a full screenplay

Your unhinged (affectionate) laughter when talking about the class dynamics of different publishing houses… I love 😂 also agree with all of your recs, I am hotly anticipating all these future adaptations… 👀

This is a great talk! Ironically, I just finished reading Convenience Store Woman a few hours ago. I loved it!It would make an excellent film. Bunny could be a real treat of a film in the right hands!

lets start some sort of petition to get Earthlings made by A24. Either that or something by Fernanda Melchor .

Neon Hemlock Press immediately came to mind for me as A24 vibes. Specifically, And What Can We Offer You Tonight by Premee Mohamed is kind of A24 to me. Also maybe Chuck Tingle's horror. His indie-pub'd Straight feels like it fits in with A24 really well. I keep editing because I think of more 😅 Carmen Maria Machado also feels A24! Most of the stories in Her Body and Other Stories would be perfect, or even an adaptation of her memoir.

Your description of Fitzcaraldo Editions is spots on 😂 it took me years to pick their titles up bc I was so intimidated by their aesthetic & I love literary stuff!

Unrelated to the video topic so I apologise in advance but: You made me remember Jonathan Strange & mister Norrell. I got the book as a Christmas present when I was like 12 (I was a fast reader and my mother thought the only metric of a book value was its length-so she only bought me tomes of 500 pages or more) I'm ashamed to say that at the time I found it beyond boring and gave it away shortly after, but now after almost 20 years I borrowed a copy from the library and giving it a second chance, so thank you :D

I just read Bad Graces by Kyrie McCauley and it would probably make a really cool A24 film. Bunch of young girls shipwreck on an isolated island and when they get injured strange things happen with their bodies. There is a creature of some sort on the island too. Queer rep.

Oh I ADORE A24, I basically watch every new movie they release since I first heard of them. So many personal favourites in their catalogue, and it makes me kinda sad that Saint Maud doesnt get half the love it deserves, it's such a perfect movie.

I think SO LATE IN THE DAY would make a good A24 film in the hands of a filmmaker like Celine Song or Joanna Hogg....the mundane melancholy of existence between moment and memory.

Let's see, I don't have a good sense for publishing companies, but for stories... VanderMeer's Southern Reach series, maybe? Though Annihilation, which I think would work the best, already has a movie adaptation. Yogo Ogawa's The Memory Police. River's Solomon's Sorrowland. And less a "this fits", but more "I would love to see what could be done with this": House of Leaves. I mean, I'm pretty sure that one's unadaptable, but a serious attempt would be fascinating.

I recently finished Eileen by Ottessa Moshfegh, needless to say it would probably also fit A24. It could use some original twists in the screen play, though, to speed up the pace a bit since it’s very introspective (meaning that you feel like you’re living inside the head of the very unpleasant main character for some days, but since I’ve also read My year of rest and relaxation I think that may be just typical of Moshfegh’s narrators). Terrific video as usual Willow, I have added Lost in the garden to my tbr 👀

My mind immediately went to Dead Ink books too. Other books that give me A24 vibes: Death Valley by Melissa Broder, Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield, Tripping Arcadia by Kit Mayquist Chlorine by Jade Song, and Monstrilio by Gerardo Sámano Córdova. (that last one might by by Dead Ink, but I'm not sure) Also, your mention of it just bumped Lost in the Garden far closer to the top of my TBR
