Seems like. But it really boils down to detective stories being hard to follow if their isn't a direct point to point. Movies and novels do a good job, the pace is difficult to manage when your players are running 1 to 11 most of the time.

This is amazing and so entertaining. Great cast of players and great GM! Looking forward to more. However, as there are a lot of new people exploring other RPG options these days--as well as people looking to get started as new players and GMs in the first place--I want to mention something extremely important: these are professional performers giving us an entertaining and highly polished production. This is NOT what a typical RPG session looks like when you gather around your friend's table. You DON'T have to do voices. You DON'T have to dress up. You DON'T have to deliver each line with effortless precision. You DON'T even have to "perform" in character. All you have to do in an RPG is have fun and make sure you don't ruin everyone else's fun. Watch this series, and other series of similar production (Critical Role, etc.) as the stylized and entertaining productions that they are. But do NOT get intimidated by these performances and think that this is how you *must* roleplay.
@TimpanistMoth_AyKayEll Жыл бұрын
The most intimidating thing about Actual Plays to me is the vocal minority of audience members hating on roleplay choices, claiming the GM is going too easy on the players, or harshly criticizing the cast for messing up their abilities or getting the math wrong. Oh, and of course ruining the game by being "too woke." Basically everyone yelling, "THEIR FUN IS WRONG! SO SO WRONG! ANYONE WHO LIKES THIS IS A [redacted]!" That always makes me think, "Welp, there speaks a representative from yet another table I won't ever want to play at. Good to know." And I become slightly more cautious about approaching new groups in the future. Thankfully, _most_ fellow fans of these shows tend to be pretty nice. :)
@flicnerdy4385 Жыл бұрын
Indeed, and also realise the DM won't be as experienced as some of these, its also not edited, so you might have to wait 20 seconds while the DM does mental math or has to scroll 20 pages in the lore document they passionately wrote.

Good observations. I totally agree. Don't think you can't do Call of Cthulhu, or any RPG, because you don't have the resources we had. But I'd also say that when you're playing and immersed in the characters and story, this is what it feels like :)

@@johntheherbalistg8756 On the contrary! In my experience, the most outspoken TTRPG players are among the worst. The chill, fun players don’t talk about it 24/7 because they employ moderation. They have OTHER interests as well. Again, in my experience, if someone approaches you specifically to talk TTRPG’s, they’re not a fun player. They live and breathe (40K, let’s say) and will NOT stop talking about it. And don’t bother to change the subject, they’ll change it right back, smoothly or not; They don’t care, they just need to talk to you about their game, the rules they use, and why you should play with them sometime.

I’m new to TTRPGs (I’ve always wanted to get into it but never knew anyone else who played), but I’ve always wanted to find a group to play with. How is being a Keeper different from a DM in DnD? Other than the thematic differences in the storyline, I mean. How do the roles differ?

A good reference and youtuber to watch in Regards to Call of Cthulhu is Seth Skorkowsky. He is an excellent resource for the game
@Starcraftgamer97 Жыл бұрын
@@Laura_5757 In my experience not by much. I would say the Keeper for CoC has far more game mechanics to probably look after rather than a DM for D&D but the principle of the role is similar. Preparing the world and story, the environment in the session, and rolling with the punches of the players and dice are pretty much what you do. And it is a lot but it is something that is adapted to and learned as you go along and play. In regards to Call of Cthulhu, Seth Skorkowsky is a good KZbinr to watch. He's got a wealth of knowledge and experience that can help Keepers and Players alike. If you are interested in this game he might be good to watch. Overall, the thing about DM-ing is to try not to overextend yourself/push yourself too hard. It's definitely something you grow into and adapt too, learning what works and doesn't for your group rather than implementing by the numbers. At least in my brief experience

I think the only thing that would improve the quality of this show, in my opinion, would be if there was an actual representation of the dice rolls on screen. As far as I could tell, the animated dice don't seem to match the actual player rolls. I don't know how much work it would be, but seeing the animated rolls give out the actual results would have more impact, as rolling dice usually adds tension and anticipation to games.

Absolutely fantastic! Super high production with the set, costumes, lighting - great to see some of my favourite role players / actors and to meet new players - this is like a radio play brought to camera and in the CoC mythos! Wonderful, fluid improv. I can't wait for what's next

OK, I watched for the like the first few minutes to get a visual of the characters then ran the video in the background. Gods of the Outer Dark do I miss old radio dramas.

I didn't know Mark Meer was doing Dungeon Master (or Keeper in this case) gigs. Being a voice actor sure helps with creating immersive characters. Are there any other similar videos with Mark Meer leading roleplay games?
