omg i finished reading Passing yesterday, and earlier today I put Dread Nation on my tbr list because Jean Bookishthoughts mentioned it in her "books i like from genres i 'hate'" video - so many things telling me this book will be amazing.

loved the variety in this selection! i have seen passing and the vanishing half together a lot, which is great because passing was one of my five star reads of this year!

Your eyeshadow looks so pretty in this video! I loved that you paired these! I just finished Grady Hendrix's Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires and now I can't wait to check out When No One is Watching!

Thank you for the video. I have expanded my reading because of your recommendations. I just read Grace Draven’s Phoenix Unbound and will try Milla Vane. I might try Jane Doe as well.

I've been wanting to read Eight Perfect Murders, but I am not okay with it spoiling books I haven't read yet, so The Eighth Detective is going on my list instead. Thanks for putting this list together!

I love that you compare a variety of genres. I don't read fantasy, well hardly, or dystopian, but you gave me some exciting books to examine like passing

This is such a fun way to do recommendations. I like that you did not go for the most obvious and some of them were a stretch. Definitely added a couple to my Want to Read shelf.

I super loved 'The Eighth Detective.' It struck me as a good book for someone interested in writing a mystery novel since the "interview" chapters really delve into the development of the mystery story that was just read. Reading 'The Night Swim' now. Yes to all the content warnings, and my oh my is this book amazingly written!

Great recommendations. Books I'm enjoying at the moment are The Trial by Franz Kafka and some rediscovered works by Edmund Crispin, one of the forgotten writers of golden age detectives. Also, Graham Greene is a new favourite of mine after watching your posts, so thank you!
@katietatey4 жыл бұрын
Which Graham Greene have you read and which is your favorite? I'm looking to pick one to start with. :) And I loved The Trial!
@bramvangompel67704 жыл бұрын
@@katietatey Graham Greene never disappoints. I've read several of his novels in the past few months, however the ones I especially liked were The Confidential Agent, Our Man in Havana (my favourite Greene so far :) ) and The End of the Affair. Great to hear that you loved The Trial! Kafka's a unique writer in many ways.

I love videos like this. Excellent reminders of many great books you've read and liked. Kameron Hurley and The Eight Detective got a bump up on my TBR. Books that I've seen recommended to be like Murderbot are Catfishing on CatNet by Naomi Krizer and Bobiverse

I love Tamora Peirce (more the Tortall Universe but anything really, she is indeed a QUEEN!) so I will check out Robin Hobb ASAP. Ps. Your Murderbot ministry continues, I got the first book for my brother after your rec, now I have read it, as has my partner. We are now all on book 2 and I am about to lend it out to a friend!

If you like Angels and Demons by Dan Brown, I think you would like Gospel by Wilton Barnhardt. It has a lot of religious iconography coupled with travel.

I really appreciate videos of this type because for some reason I am always trying to compare what I'm reading to another book. :) So does the ending of Dread Nation punch you right in the face like Passing does? That was my favorite thing about that book. I'm really excited to read The Vanishing Half in September. And if you want another classic about a similar topic, Iola Leroy by Frances Ellen Watkins Harper was good, too. I wanted to read When No One is Watching when you said it's about gentrification but then when you said it's a horror book I'm not so sure... I think I want to read some nonfiction about gentrification. My neighborhood is (very slowly) experiencing that and I am wanting to educate myself more on that topic...

Sorry, I used a voice app to save my arthritic fingers. I loved your detective and contemporary selections and since I can't get to my library right now can't read on eBook I'm glad that some of the books are older and I might be able to get them a bit cheaper. Just a cheeky question, does literary just mean better writing? LOL

I liked Grady Hendrix' Southern Bookclub's Guide to Slaying Vampires. If you want to read the funniest books about academia, read Jane Smiley's Moo and Richard Russo's Sraight Man, both hilarious.

I'm in the middle of reading Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir and I'm finding Gideon's character very similar in vibes to Murderbot! So I would say if you liked Murderbot's sarcastic, socially awkward heart of gold, you'll like Gideon Nav from Gideon the Ninth.

Haha, and see, I DNFed Gideon the Ninth, so I wouldn't have thought to make that comparison! :D But always happy for more ideas of Murderbot readalikes
