Never Let Me Go was such a great film, I want to read the book now. I’m excited to have a few of these listed in my TBR pile already like A Wrinkle in Time, The Library at Mt. I love you putting yourself out there with these choices. Have you read any Jessie Mihalik books in terms of romantic science fiction? Being very long read in regards to romance, I find your recommendations good but very current, very today. There is a depth of romance from years past that I think might change up your selections. There are writers who are still writing today (like Nora) who are classics in regency, romantic comedy, historicals, etc. that I would suggest trying before coming to any conclusions about the best. The "problem" with romance is that its such a prolific genre that people lose touch with the past.
@bookslikewhoa4 жыл бұрын
Well, to be fair, I'm going to for "where to start" not "the best." Looking at my demographics for viewership, old skool romance is likely going to be a stretch for where to start in a genre that has rapidly changing genre conventions that date themselves pretty quickly. I think more current titles are a better bet. Trying to get a 25 year old in 2020 to read Whitney My Love... is going to be stretch :D
@sassycatz44704 жыл бұрын
@@bookslikewhoa I know. I felt rather bad after making that comment but there are so many old school romance authors -- some of whom are still writing -- who many new readers to the genre are unaware of or are never compelled to read because romance ages so fast. I hold these authors dear to me because they are the ones who created the tropes we now take for granted. They paved the way and they deserve recognition. Not just La Nora.

oh wow, what a fun video! When it comes to book lists, the longer the better :) I think your video among the likes of it is my favorite :) I made lots of notes on your recommendations. Since you like YA mysteries, I'd also recommend you to try A Good Girl's Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson. It became very popular here in UK, and recently published there. It's perfect entertainment for these times. I also think you'd like this particular middle-grade mystery if you haven't read, Strange Star by Emma Carroll. It's a historical middle-grade mystery, Merry Shelly is a character in it, and fictionalizes where she got the inspiration for Frankenstein. It was really good. Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz is a small town mystery as well, a book within a book, so interesting one :) Take care! x

I would have chosen The Handmaid's Take over Never Let Me Go. I recently read NLMG, and gave it 1-star. I think it's an unsuccessful novel in that it failed to convince me of the world and the stakes/ consequences. SPOILER! Throughout the entire time reading I kept thinking What are the economics of this? Surely it is more costly to clone people and raise them than it is to continue to research cures and treatments for diseases. I had so many questions and I understand that the novel didn't focus on world building so I was meant to just accept what I was reading and focus on the relationship between Ruth, Tommy, and Kathy. It was just hard for me because they were so flat and I didn't care about them. I had tried it before, meaning I read the first page and knew I wouldn't like it so I decided not to go on. But recently a friend and co-worker recommended it to me and I decided that I'd listen to her. Man, was I right tho.

Haha, interesting, because I really didn't much like The Handmaid's Tale at all! :D I love the ideas/themes, but as a story, really didn't work for me
