The sad part is that bookstores here in Brazil are closing and most of these places you went doesnt exist anymore! Cultura and Saraiva went bankrupt...

I know it's much easier said than done but get involved! Try to save these shops. Open new ones. Do not resign and turn away. Contribute and engage.

@@rolanddeschain6089 There're not much we can do, because the problem isn't in the physical aspect, there is other companies and places selling books, the problem here is cultural. Most people in Brazil don't read much (aside for school or work). And, although "we" try to change that, it will take years(!) to raise the total average of readers in Brazil.

I love to read (so much so that I made my own film all about it) but rarely make time for it. As soon as I finished Max’s film I picked up a Kafka that’s been on my shelf for weeks and read almost 50 pages. Such a great feeling. I’ll definitely keep it up with the half an hour method.

Nice! The trick that made me read more consistent: write down you are going to read 5 pages of a book, with a checkbox next to it. If you wanna get real advanced write down a 'why' next to it. The task has to be so simple you can't not do it.

Hands down, Max, this is your best work, including WAYF. It's tight, yet it conveys the emotionalism, the passions of reading as well, without belaboring the point. I get that you are spinning your wheels with Catfish and other projects but if you could bring this sensibility to projects like WAYF, dude, I would watch that as much as I watch On Golden Pond or Tinker Tailor...or even the Matrix movies! Maybe it's the finding of these spaces that is like finding lost civilizations before they were lost (with the exception of this store that was closed before you got to it), or maybe it's the frenetic pace you edited this piece...but like the original star wars or the original star trek movies (1 & 2) you have made us want to wander left when you panned right...or go beyond the back rack of books as you stayed in the foreground...you made us want to explore these worlds, making them so tantalizing. Great Job, man!

I'm Brazilian. Last week I was actually talking to someone about our bookstores. We have some big companies with a bunch of stores around the country (like Livraria cultura, Livraria da vila and Saraiva), but we don't have little ones. That way, the bookstores are enormous - I literally used the same term "the Apple store of bookstores". And everyone of them are this big. So they can't sell all the books they have in stock and they and up broke. Also, a normal place for this stores is in a shopping mall. They rent this giant spaces which can't be filled up with sellable books. 2 of this 3 companies are almost closing their doors. Saraiva, for example, bought the French store "Fnac" and broke it as well. It's a huge problem!

As a Brazilian I can say that we have a lot of bookstores and excellent ones but the main problem it's with our lack of culture and most of parents don't incentivate our kids to read also our politician give a lot of money to the university but the money invested in the high school or earlier years of our students it's not enough and that's where we are solidify the base to raise good readers.
