The narration is, for the most part, great, but the story itself is rather mediocre. The detective, who goes by the sonorous nickname of Hunter of Men, barely detects anything but goes around mooning over a constantly fainting damsel in distress. The said mademoiselle refuses to tell the truth for no other reason than keeping the intrigue. And then there's a convenient confession that dots the I's and crosses the T's because the renowned detective couldn't do it. It's this kind of stories that Agatha Christie made fun of - there are multiple references to how Hastings is a naive knight on a white horse, always on the side of the pretty lady; also to how the heroine will plead "Ah, I can't tell you, I can't!!", and then randomly spill the beans when it suits the author.

The narrator's indrawn breaths aren't QUITE enough to make me close the app, but are grating on my nerves badly. The thing that would make this worse is an American reader. I'm not a xenophobe. I'm a Texan born and raised myself, but I cannot listen to my countrymen butchering books, especially those by British authors. The continual gasping of Mr. Thomas runs a distant second.
