LOVE the note about taking classes. It's actually way harder for the average person to learn how to get the most out of something like say, a photo editing app, than we think it is. I think young-ish people especially feel embarrassed when they struggle or feel overwhelmed by these things because there's an assumption that if you use any tech you can figure out ALL tech.

I think that sometimes I read books that I don’t really like, that might be a 1-3 that I’m disappointed in, but that I’m the better for reading. So having the power to know would make me a worse person because I wouldn’t be as likely to explore different things. It would be nice to turn it on and off and maybe spend a month or so reading bangers, or just touching some things I’ve never heard of in a bookstore to find something cool.

Congrats on your 10 years! 🎉 I really loved the advice you gave, and insight on smaller creators in the booktube community. I’ve had my channel for four years and would get discouraged when I didn’t see engagement in videos I worked so hard on. But you helped me realize that part of what makes our community great is the friendships and relationship we have when we support each other, and that is encouraging me to discover new channels and meet new creators ❤

I absolutely would not take that power. The best thing about 5 stars for me is the surprise and just the experience of slowly realising I'm completely obsessed with a story. I wouldn't want that feeling spoiled for me beforehand. Plus I think having that power would make me hesitate to pick up books that won't be a 5 star and that's not something I want. It's really important to me personally that I continue to pick up things that aren't necessarily my taste. Instead just give me the power to feel when a book is going to do absolutely nothing for me, either positive or negative, because those are the worst reading experiences.

Two things: 1) I also miss Kat and need her to start making content again in some form 2) In relation to the touching the book and knowing the rating I would say no. Part of the joy of 5 stars is the surprise when I finish it and realise it’s a five star read. I feel like if I didn’t have the variation of different ratings I wouldn’t enjoy reading as much

Since I currently have a "success" rate of 0.06% for five star reads this year (11 books out of 177)😅I'd want to know the rating for a book if I touched it. I think lower-rated books help you appreciate the five stars even more, but I think my curiosity would win out and if there was a book I really thought I'd love and I found out it ends up being a 2 out of 5...I might still read it because I'd want to know what went wrong.

Ooh you should reread Head Full of Ghosts now that you love Paul Tremblay and see if your opinion changed! 👻 I'm a constant reader (200 books this year), and I definitely wouldn't want to know the star rating of a book before reading it! That takes away half the adventure of reading. The thrill of discovery is worth the occasional disappointment. Also if everything was great I fear it would get... boring? Superpower question: nothing is harder for me then opening a book and starting it. I fear if I was able to know the star rating, I’d constantly be waiting for the perfect moment to start it and I’d never read. I hate to say it but sometimes you just need a mediocre book. Not everything is a win, but some of the best laugh out loud moments, the best escapism, and the most joy I’ve gotten has been from books that I haven’t rated the highest.
@looseleafreadsСағат бұрын
For the star rating, I wouldn't take it but I have thought a lot about how I wish I knew when the best time to read each book was. Like today is the prime day in my life to read x book, I am most likely to get the most out of it in at the age and season I am in now. I don't know that I'd even use the power so much but for books that I see potential in, it would help.

I would not want to know the rating beforehand. To me amazing books shine because they are so much better or different than the other books I’m reading. Oh my lord. There are a lot of questions I'd have about knowing star ratings. Like is it just the number? No other info? Imagine just going to Goodreads and judging a book merely on its average rating. I know that's not quite the same, but sometimes the value of a book to me isn't always captured in its rating, which is inherently subjective anyway. Assuming that is the nature of the power, I'd be hesitant to take it. BUT there are an infinite number of books, and if I could know which ones are a hard 5, that might be worth it, even if it costs me reads that are valuable in other ways. Lol I just talked myself into a circle. I'm taking the power.

No way, no how, I would not take that power. So many books I love are not appreciated or don’t have a big readership, and I don’t think I would have picked those up if I went into them with any preconceived notions. I wouldn’t want to touch a book and know the rating, I feel like it would take away the 5-star-ness of the story to know, dulling the impact of enjoying the book. There’s such pleasure in falling into a book and realizing it’s top notch for you 🫶

I wouldn’t want to know the star rating cause I wouldn’t want to miss content that could be interesting if I read it, no matter if it was 1 or 5. Concepts, messages, funny quips. I read a lot in a year but every read whether good or bad leaves something if only the knowledge that I don’t like a new trope or a concept. I also wouldn’t read anything if I knew the rating in advance. I don’t even love knowing tropes or who is the two romantic partners in advance, nevermind if I’m gonna like it.

I wouldn't want to know the rating of a book upon touching it because I wouldn't want it to influence me. I can read a fantastic 5 star book and also have tons of fun with a 3.5 star one. And I can also change my mind six months later 😅.

I would take that magical power, even though I read a lot like this anyway. Here's my rationale: I have a favorite book that I re-read multiple times a year and still love it nearly as much as the first time. I get lost in it. Knowing that I love this book only makes me want to read it more, so knowing I will like it wouldn't be a downfall. (I also like to read parts of it when I'm stressed or too tired to do anything else). But I think I would still read books that I'll rate low because I do that now anyways. Mostly because I like to challenge myself. Maybe I'm naive to the reality of it though. Just saying.

I don't think I would take that power to know the star rating either, because so many books I think are going to be 5 stars I already put off reading even though it seems illogical, my brain will be like oh save that for later or that's going to be so good I won't want it to be "over". And on the other end, if I knew it was going to be a 1 to 2 star, I feel like I would be more likely to read it because I'd want to know why it turns out bad.
@mackenzieperry9307Сағат бұрын
For the super power, would it be the star rating you would give it if you read it then? Or overall? Because I’ve had 5 star reads that went down after a reread and vice versa! I think a super power to know exactly when to read a book in your life would interest me more.
@greenonionbabeyСағат бұрын
28:00 I wouldn't, because even as someone who uses a personal star rating for books and obviously watches content where people give books ratings, I think reducing a book (or any art) Exclusively to a made-up numerical value is a really shallow and unproductive way to engage with it (which is also why I never let other people's star ratings or a book's general rating on an aggregate site deter me from reading it). There are books I'd rate 1-2 stars that are objectively some of the most important and informative things I've ever read, either because of some part of their actual content, or because I learned something about writing and storytelling from how they failed for me. And there are a lot of things I read and rate 4-5 stars that objectively, at the end of the day, didn't add much to my life other than being something I enjoyed passing the time with. If I only ever read enjoyable things because I knew I'd enjoy them, I think honestly I wouldn't like or value reading as much as I do. I would get bored and I wouldn't be challenged as much. Bad books can be really good for you imo
@the_eerie_faerie_tales3 сағат бұрын
That's a good idea - I really should take some filming/editing courses. All of what I know is self-taught by trial and error and doing things accidentally 😂 sometimes I see a thumbnail or something in someone's video and say "how the hell did they do that?!"... so some education on the topic would definitely be beneficial.

I don't think I'd take the power! I think the main reason I'm saying this is that a 3-star read doesn't always mean I didn't like something or that it wasn't worth my time. Sometimes the 3 (and even occasional 2) star read is that junky nonsense TV show you put on just to let your brain take a break at the end of the day. Also, a 3-star book for me is as likely to be a book that objectively was good but subjectively I didn't enjoy as it is to be a book that objectively was a trainwreck but I had a good time. Finally, not to question the logic of a totally made-up scenario, but is one's experience of a thing not altered by expectation 🤔

I would definitely not take that power. If I went into a book knowing it was going to be a 5 star, I just feel like it'd ruin the book...same with a 1/2 star. I would just not read it and then I'd just automatically love(?) everything I read? I don't know, just sounds like a bad idea for my reading. Also, a lot of my 5 stars have made me cry/emotional, so if I know that going in, it's probably not going to have the same effect.
