I don't understand how we are expected to follow along without knowing the value of each variable. If I create my own values, I could get a different answer or the same answer with different calculations. Is this tutorial supposed to explain how to simplify the equation?

Sorry I'm a month late but I've learned from Keleshev's videos today. (1+y)=1. 1+ (any Boolean variable) = 1. Then 1 multiplied by any boolean variable is itself just like in algebra, so x*1 = x. Hope this helps anyone that sees your question if someone else should ask

+Christopher Samarita Boolean algebra is that branch of math which deals with only two types of outcome, either True or False, and we denote them as 1(True) or 0(False). So there is only two probable value for any variable in Boolean Algebra. So if you want to cross-check any value, you have to consider any variable either as 0 or as 1. And if you do it right, you will get the same answer for both. You can do it for my above example. You can take b as 0 or 1, and you will get the same result for both.

C is the same thing as C*1. He is not stating that C has the Value of 1. He is simplifying the expression. Think of it as if you had 8 + 8*4. You Know that 8 is the same as 8*1. Therefore, 8*1 + 8*4. Then you simplify 8*1 + 8*4 = 8(1+4). The same rules apply to Boolean algebra, although keep in mind you are not dealing with values.
