I have been keeping up with my commonplace book all year and i can definitely say that it did improve my life. I've been journaling all my life and all my thoughts and feelings are in there. However i have many interests and hobby's that need a place to be written down so that is where my commonplace book comes in. I have a separate journal for all the books i read because i want them to be in one place. Great video, definitely learned from you

Sounds like you've already got a solid commonplace practice going - and yet glad you learned something new here Christien! I find that journaling should be its own thing, whereas having a commonplace book for specific interests like mentioned is super helpful :)

Your best and most thought provoking (to ME!) “when working through my own thoughts.” I’ve never in my 73 years seen the benefit of writing down my own thoughts. But I do value lists. I just don’t keep them. However, I now have small grandchildren who may not ever know me as adults. So I’ve been considering a Commonplace Book. Your sentence captured my imagination. Thank you.

Love to hear this Regina! And I've never thought of a commonplace book as an heirloom of sorts - but could totally see the value in that!

I used to have one small book for external stuff and a bigger one for reflections. I would only take the small one with me, but stick some sheets of paper in it on which I wrote personal stuff. When I came back home, I glued the pages in my bigger book. 😊
@boomshiddang23 күн бұрын
Oh that's a really great way to go about it Sarah! I never thought of trying something out like this before but it's kind of a brilliant way to have the best of both worlds: the portability of a small notebook while having loose sheets just for reflections to bring back home to the bigger one keeps the scope of each much more distinct. I may have to try this out for my next set of CPBs :)

First video of yours that I’ve watched. Haven't started a commonplace notebook yet but will soon. The ponderbook looks very interesting and seems like it would potentially getting started easier since I wouldn’t have to do the layout myself.
@boomshiddang24 күн бұрын
@@inkymagpieo1271 it would definitely make it easier but you can still get started using any ole notebook :) hope your first commonplace goes well!

My take on indexing: I prefer to either have blank space for the page number since not every page will have a new entry and (ideally) a bigger space for page numbers as I tend to return to the same topic/theme multiple times.

I have been having a small notebook in my bag for very long time almost 15 years. it basically contains some random thoughts, fantastic quotes from books/vidoes/movies, all my prompt ideas for my painting hobby etc., never knew it had a name 'Commonplace book'.

And now you know Bhanu!! Great job on keeping such a consistent practice, too!

What I find useful in my general cpb is to link my ideas by adding the page number where I previously wrote about a particular subject. Think Obsidian, but analogue.
@boomshiddang17 күн бұрын
This is a great technique - I actually do the same and want to cover this in a future video. Thanks for sharing!

i use a ratta supernote a6 nomad and boox mini c, and i would gladly pay for a pdf of your ponderbook layout. brilliant call out, on how helpful visual feilds are for consistency and i love the indexed? checked feature. while both eink tablets have ways to generate "indexes" based on highlights and tags, that only works at best in an exported pdf on a device and at worst, in the direct ecosystem of the tablet. i often print out my notebooks as backups and having an index is still essential plus keeping your own index manually helps you know/remember what's in each "notebook"/file better.
@boomshiddang17 күн бұрын
Had no idea those e-ink tablets even existed. Took a brief look and they seem pretty cool! I'll keep the digital PDF in mind, as that's a clear use case for it :) And I've found there's an almost meditative art to manually indexing, which is another benefit on top of the mental reinforcement to remember what's filed where!

You should do a collaboration with field notes
@boomshiddang17 күн бұрын
That's a great idea Glen, but I've got something even better in mind… ;)
@vijayaranganl418521 күн бұрын
What is explained as index is actually table of contents, I think. Index should have one subject or title linked to many pages.
@boomshiddang20 күн бұрын
That's a great point! Thanks for pointing out that nuanced difference, and you're totally right! I think either approach could work so I think it comes down to preference - and using the correct term :)
