Pretty wild, huh? Glad we were able to find a few stealth locations & stay out of trouble. We love Florida but...BOY, are we ready for BLM land in the West. We can't wait to experience that level of freedom. There will be 1 or 2 more videos from our Key West experiences & then we are going to be trying something a little different...just so we're able to get more videos out on a more consistent basis. So Happie you all are HERE, living up this journey with us (: can't WAIT to share more! The Keys are so beautiful & we have met a few great friends already - it's been so cool out here.
Who are we?
Hey Guys! We are Ryan, Mary & Cisco. We have hit the road in our converted Ram Promaster van in pursuit of seeing this beautiful world & making lifelong memories together. We started this journey in our first RV; a Thor Four Winds 28A. However, we recently decided to switch over to a van. We felt it was the best decision for us & better fits our purpose for life on the road. We sold our home in Maryland, started renting out our townhouse, somehow fit EVERYTHING we own into a 10x15 storage unit & embraced full-time RV living & NOW - van life! We are starting with traveling the States & would love to push it even further. We feel so blessed & thank the good Lord for this opportunity to see, learn, and experience brand new places in our home-on-wheels. We would love to have you along for the journey...to laugh with us, cry with us, celebrate with us and, of course, fail & pick up the pieces with us. Don't forget to subscribe so you don't miss anything!

I visited Key West 15 years ago and stayed in a nice hotel for $100/night (Jan). Today you cannot get a room for less than $500/night, and camp sites are $100-200/night. Parking sucks and the traffic getting there is a nightmare. Glad I saw it once, will not go back. And I only live 2 hrs north of Miami.

Been camping and visiting the keys for over 35 years now, I've seen it change a LOT over that time. There's still a few little spots you can get away with camping but overall it's become a rich man's playground and people not so fortunate have been pushed out. All of Knights Key used to be a campground but they sold it and now it's a multi million dollar resort. Long Key hasn't been rebuilt since the last Hurricane and as you found out unless you book 11 months in advance good luck getting a spot anywhere. We actually rent a house now just because the cost and difficulty of camping was too much. Anyways, the Keys are beautiful but I don't agree with many of the changes. Enjoy your adventures!

I agree. I lived in Big Pine for eight years back in the 80’s. (Loved driving over the old 7 mile bridge everyday to and from work🥰❤️). I go back to the keys every few years. It breaks my heart to see all the resorts and changes. The Cruise ships -IMO-really messed it up. Mallory square was moved and hasn’t been the same since. With all that said- there used to be still something beautiful and nostalgic about going to the Keys. ❤️❤️

@@BreezyByTheSea63 Remember the Australian pines at Long Key, so beautiful back then! We often camped there for a month, had to leave for a few days and come back after 2 weeks but those were the days. Met so many great people too, now it's booked 11 months in advance to the day plus without the pines no shade or privacy. Any chance you remember a place called Perry's on the Atlantic on Islamorada? It was a restaurant with a ship theme. I came a little later than you lived there, mostly the early 90's, I think our first year down was 1988 or 89, the new bridges were in place by then but my father remembered the old ones. Give the keys another 10 years and we won't be able to afford it at all.

Very cool video, great content, we live in a condo in Key Largo, but before that we lived 12 years on our Privilege 615 catamaran sailboat. We always anchored out, wasn't about to pay the outrageous prices the marina's wanted for a slip especially with our boat being 65 feet long, but over the years we meet some nice van dwellers like yourself that were looking for a place to boondock in Key West, we told them to visit Key West during the day and then move north a few miles where the chances of finding a spot to camp for a night without being hassled. We actually made a list of places you can stay overnight in the upper keys and middle keys for free and nobody will bother you.

Mischief and I forgot the name of the older Gator that is like 15 long that was shot in one eye are always there at the boat dock. You guys are funny. No Key West is not the only key in the Keys😂 I was watching your videos and was wondering how you even opened the windows with all the mosquitos and noseeums next to the beaches at sundown. When the sun goes down next to any body of water down here, you better be inside, or else you will wish you were. The rain, wait five minutes and the weather will be totally different! If you like to snorkel, any red coral is something you don't want to touch. It's called FIRE CORAL, for a reason. You touch it, and you will never forget the pain and feeling of fire on your skin. You shouldn't touch any Coral, but that one is the devil figure skating on your head when you have a migraine!

See the thing is I get what both of you are saying. But this issue is a little bigger than that. It’s the term “free country”. There are some people that actually believe free means I can go anywhere in America that is not owned by an individual and do whatever I want that’s not encroaching on someone else’s rights or freedoms. People are slowly waking up to the fact that we aren’t as “free” as we’d like to think we are. You can’t just go on a beach in Florida after a certain time. Let alone sleep at one. You can’t just go to a state or national park after the sun goes down. You can’t just arbitrarily fly a drone that you bout in this country at any altitude. There’s a ton of rules and laws in place that have no direct effect on someone else’s rights. It’s ridiculous but it’s what we asked for.

Isn't this the proof that the "freedom" of van life is greatly exaggerated? The omnipresent "stealth" concern - evading fines and arrest, hoping there's no knock telling you to move at 3am... that is not freedom. This is not a put down on the life. We lived for years in a cabover camper, in tents, and our partially constructed buildings on our remote Alaska construction sites. You're right about the BLM land being so different. Even better are all the sand bars and gravel bars on rivers, below the ordinary high water mark. They can't stop you from camping there because it is public domain. So my husband took us in rafts towing truck tire inner tubes stacked with supplies on the Mississipi and its tributaries. You can stay free for weeks, nobody will hassle you. There's no freedom like owning unzoned, unrestricted use remote rural land. No permits, no licenses, nobody having to review and improve, nobody to tell you no. Build a nuclear power plant if you want, no regulations prohibiting same. When all you really want is a shack and an outhouse. You can still do that in a vanishingly few places. Like Alaska.

Geiger Key Marina and Hog Fish Bar and Grill are famous for their Hogfish. If you ever get back try them. Where you parked at Boca Chica is in the flight path of the Navy base where the fighter jets go to train so that's why it's noisy. You'll see FA-18's about every day.The sound of freedom! We camp in the Keys ever winter in Cudjoe Key just 23 miles from mile zero

Visited Key West when I was 18 and drove the bridges down at night could not see anything but the road, Lucky because I would have been scared to death if I knew the water was 100 feet below me. Asked a local where all the beaches were and he gave me the funniest look before he said "Son, what do you want us to do? Grind up all the coral and make you some beaches?" And never, ever make the mistake of calling it a Conch (concshe) shell .. it is a Conch (conk) shell

I lived in Key West in the 1980’s. It was wonderful. It was a whole different atmosphere of local artists down Duval Street and very friendly and hometown feeling. Not anymore. We did not have cruise ships and we did not have the perverse parades. The actual southernmost point is off of the military base. Take a look at your map. For military people, we have the military bases to stay on with our RVs. I left my heart in the “Florida Keys” and I am headed back. The Keys are called Cays in the Bahamas, small islands. Make sure you get on the big sailing ship, and experience the beautiful sunsets and waters of the Florida Keys. Stock Island has a great little RV park on the water. Research the history of the Florida Keys, it is amazing. 🌊🏝️😊🚐⛵️

Apparently, it CAN be done, if done right, Ryan Twomey even stealth camped overnight and didn't seem to have any trouble. He parked, got out his ebike and everything then came back and stayed overnight.

It CAN be done. We managed to stay there for over a week. But little did we know there were fines attached to it if caught. Key west is a little different than any other spot we have been yet. All the locals know what you’re up to and don’t seem to like us staying overnight. We even called the sheriffs office to make sure and it definitely is a thing. Moral of the story is you can do it just do it at your own risk.

So many places in the upper keys (not key west) where you could stealth camp and not have to worry about those issues... Key West is pretty over rated as well... Marathon Key (Sombrero Beach) and Bahia Honda ($5 entry and the best free snorkeling youll find) is really all you need!

I'm from the Keys, Born & Raised, and I just wanted to mention really quick that gap in the bridge ya'll filmed at 10:53 that's where the blew up the bridge with demo for the ending scene in the movie True Lies with Arnold Schwarzenegger. It's known as the old bridge / old 7-mile bridge, but you can see in the movie where they blow it up and the vehicle slides into the water. Wild!

I remember the one time we went we were right off Duval Street and the damn roosters would wake us all up at 5am after getting home at 2am from the bars. It was a good time had a ton of laughs that trip but that location was awful for noise live band outside at night and roosters in the AM. Got almost no sleep the entire weekend beautiful place but probably will never go back at least not to Key West maybe one of the other keys a little more laid back.

Visited Key West Thanksgiving-ish 2023 in our 24 ft Sprinter. Parking was challenging. We overnighted on a residential street in the Casa Marina area. We are not stealth. After leaving Key West and doing a little resesrch about RVing there, I don't think it was even legal for me to drive a 24ft long, 10ft tall vehicle in the city. Too bad, I'd like to go back and spend more money but I'm not parking an hour away.

11:05 You can hear all the road noise in those Pro Masters. I bet a cheap mic would sound a lot better. 23:50 Hotel and RV parking is a big business in the Keys. They don't want outsiders unless you're spending a lot money. It's already oversaturated so that's how they regulate it. It's sad but if they didn't do that it would probably get overrun with homeless people. South Florida in general is tough for boondocking.

My first trip to the Keys and Key West was late 70’s, we went to the nude beach. Needless to say it’s a little different today. Not sure where the average person lives (think about all the hotel and restaurant workers). Hurricanes cause the biggest change, then the big guys come in and buy up everything and build condos.

I love KW, if you spend time downtown it’s usually super busy especially when cruise ships arrive. I prefer staying away from the hassle and bustle of Duvall street. Dry Tortugas is one of my favorite national parks to visit! If you do go downtown, a scooter makes parking so much easier! Also, the comment about larger RV’s rocking and rolling isn’t always true, often times those 45ft coaches are the best driving most stable RV’s you can get.

We are the same. It was cool to touch mile 0 but too much going on for us lol. The wind blows our van around pretty good on super windy days as well. I think it’s just because of the height of the high roof vans and RVs
@gary7moore
@gary7moore 6 ай бұрын
@@happietobehere I have a older 45 ft Entegra cornerstone, it’s by far the most stable RV I have owed or driven. It takes a lot of wind to move +50,000 lbs around, the extra axel in the rear also helps keep it stable. My Jeep wrangler gets pushed around significantly more than the RV. I believe it’s a combination of height, weight and suspension. My Jeep is heavy but has crappy live axels. RV is big, heavy and has a great suspension.
