I visited Key West 15 years ago and stayed in a nice hotel for $100/night (Jan). Today you cannot get a room for less than $500/night, and camp sites are $100-200/night. Parking sucks and the traffic getting there is a nightmare. Glad I saw it once, will not go back. And I only live 2 hrs north of Miami.

Been camping and visiting the keys for over 35 years now, I've seen it change a LOT over that time. There's still a few little spots you can get away with camping but overall it's become a rich man's playground and people not so fortunate have been pushed out. All of Knights Key used to be a campground but they sold it and now it's a multi million dollar resort. Long Key hasn't been rebuilt since the last Hurricane and as you found out unless you book 11 months in advance good luck getting a spot anywhere. We actually rent a house now just because the cost and difficulty of camping was too much. Anyways, the Keys are beautiful but I don't agree with many of the changes. Enjoy your adventures!

I agree. I lived in Big Pine for eight years back in the 80’s. (Loved driving over the old 7 mile bridge everyday to and from work🥰❤️). I go back to the keys every few years. It breaks my heart to see all the resorts and changes. The Cruise ships -IMO-really messed it up. Mallory square was moved and hasn’t been the same since. With all that said- there used to be still something beautiful and nostalgic about going to the Keys. ❤️❤️

@@BreezyByTheSea63 Remember the Australian pines at Long Key, so beautiful back then! We often camped there for a month, had to leave for a few days and come back after 2 weeks but those were the days. Met so many great people too, now it's booked 11 months in advance to the day plus without the pines no shade or privacy. Any chance you remember a place called Perry's on the Atlantic on Islamorada? It was a restaurant with a ship theme. I came a little later than you lived there, mostly the early 90's, I think our first year down was 1988 or 89, the new bridges were in place by then but my father remembered the old ones. Give the keys another 10 years and we won't be able to afford it at all.

Very cool video, great content, we live in a condo in Key Largo, but before that we lived 12 years on our Privilege 615 catamaran sailboat. We always anchored out, wasn't about to pay the outrageous prices the marina's wanted for a slip especially with our boat being 65 feet long, but over the years we meet some nice van dwellers like yourself that were looking for a place to boondock in Key West, we told them to visit Key West during the day and then move north a few miles where the chances of finding a spot to camp for a night without being hassled. We actually made a list of places you can stay overnight in the upper keys and middle keys for free and nobody will bother you.

Isn't this the proof that the "freedom" of van life is greatly exaggerated? The omnipresent "stealth" concern - evading fines and arrest, hoping there's no knock telling you to move at 3am... that is not freedom. This is not a put down on the life. We lived for years in a cabover camper, in tents, and our partially constructed buildings on our remote Alaska construction sites. You're right about the BLM land being so different. Even better are all the sand bars and gravel bars on rivers, below the ordinary high water mark. They can't stop you from camping there because it is public domain. So my husband took us in rafts towing truck tire inner tubes stacked with supplies on the Mississipi and its tributaries. You can stay free for weeks, nobody will hassle you. There's no freedom like owning unzoned, unrestricted use remote rural land. No permits, no licenses, nobody having to review and improve, nobody to tell you no. Build a nuclear power plant if you want, no regulations prohibiting same. When all you really want is a shack and an outhouse. You can still do that in a vanishingly few places. Like Alaska.

See the thing is I get what both of you are saying. But this issue is a little bigger than that. It’s the term “free country”. There are some people that actually believe free means I can go anywhere in America that is not owned by an individual and do whatever I want that’s not encroaching on someone else’s rights or freedoms. People are slowly waking up to the fact that we aren’t as “free” as we’d like to think we are. You can’t just go on a beach in Florida after a certain time. Let alone sleep at one. You can’t just go to a state or national park after the sun goes down. You can’t just arbitrarily fly a drone that you bout in this country at any altitude. There’s a ton of rules and laws in place that have no direct effect on someone else’s rights. It’s ridiculous but it’s what we asked for.

I remember the one time we went we were right off Duval Street and the damn roosters would wake us all up at 5am after getting home at 2am from the bars. It was a good time had a ton of laughs that trip but that location was awful for noise live band outside at night and roosters in the AM. Got almost no sleep the entire weekend beautiful place but probably will never go back at least not to Key West maybe one of the other keys a little more laid back.

Nice I live in Fort Lauderdale FL. Should visit (Las olas Beach) Pompano Beach or Hollywood Beach. Very friendly atmosphere. More parking options, all day paid parking spots.

I will say being retired military I stay on the base in Key West. You can pitch a tent bring a RV, stay in the transient building, stay in a trailer 2 bedroom $147.00 a night, stay in the Town homes 3 bedroom $167 a night. Plenty of parking for your boat/car. Who can afford almost $500. a night.

I think they forced the locals that had floating homes on "Houseboat Row".😮💨

Key West Parking lot 808 Southard St, Key West, FL 33040 24 hr parking but cash only. I paid $10 but noticed it might have gone up to $15? No Rvs I had plain small Nissian van no problem. 4 blocks from Duval Street.

thanks...nice that you share the info for folks behind...didn't appreciate the selfishness in the video....we found ours but not willing to help anyone else...bad karma...subscribed but just unsubscribed because of their selfishness

It’s not selfishness. We were told not to say anything. It’s very hard in the keys. Glad you just assumed and felt that way. Anyways. Have a good day.

the guy was 'selfish'. Maybe, he wanted to keep it to himself so they can return and hope it is still available. She was ready to divulge. Maybe, give her a tip and she can private message. Lol

I van stayed in Key West some 53 yrs ago and never was bothered the same with Washington DC, and many other places we stopped traveling across country. But, it was a different world then.

My first trip to the Keys and Key West was late 70’s, we went to the nude beach. Needless to say it’s a little different today. Not sure where the average person lives (think about all the hotel and restaurant workers). Hurricanes cause the biggest change, then the big guys come in and buy up everything and build condos.

Visited Key West when I was 18 and drove the bridges down at night could not see anything but the road, Lucky because I would have been scared to death if I knew the water was 100 feet below me. Asked a local where all the beaches were and he gave me the funniest look before he said "Son, what do you want us to do? Grind up all the coral and make you some beaches?" And never, ever make the mistake of calling it a Conch (concshe) shell .. it is a Conch (conk) shell

I’ve been to all those places I love it down there, except for the humidity bit too much for me. But they do have the best Keylime pie in the country.

FYI, refrigerated eggs don't go bad they just dry out. If you get a bad or rotten egg chances are it was layed that way. I buy dozens of eggs at a time and eat them over months. I've never had a bad one plus older eggs peel easier once hard-boiled. Cheers!

That's the one thing I don't miss about living in Florida, the rain. It would rain on one side of the street and sun shine on the other. I like keeping my motorcycles and vehicles detailed and it would rain 3 hours later.... 😠

Those are fighter jets that fly pretty much everyday. Try listening to the noise for nearly two years. We stayed on Big Coppitt or Pine Key and the jets were our entertainment. Key west is a military town with a navel base and more.
