Risk vs. Reward: A Day with Arctic Cat Black Cats Dave McClure and Riley Kincaid
When linking up with Arctic Cat Black Cats Dave McClure and Riley Kincaid, you know you’re in for a solid day of riding! It was the first time riding with Dave and Riley since the loss of Rob Kincaid. Losing Rob was a wake-up call to all of us and with avalanche danger being as high as it was, we rode low and made the time to go over key avalanche red flags:
❌ Recent avalanches
❌ Signs of unstable snow
❌ Persistent weak layers
❌ Wind loading
❌ Heavy snowfall or rain
Recently, Arctic Cat and their Black Cats team completed an Avalanche 1 course so it was great to hit the refresh button on what we have already been trained on. With snowmobiles continuing to improve and becoming easier to ride, it is more important now than ever to get avalanche education. Ready to get started? Hit this link: bit.ly/37MxBXS

Shout out to Jeremy Hanke.. those three questions he wires into you on his course keeps you honest in the mountians. Did my course with him in 2016 and I think I'll sign up again in 2026 for a refresher if he is still teaching.

So much respect for Riley,couldn’t imagine seeing what he seen last year , let alone still on a sled,following his dads footsteps and going riding in sane area his dad passed. I hope he goes far and is very successful in the future

We’ve been getting hammered the last few days up in Teton Valley. It’s finally cleared up but Avalanche Conditions have been super high. Rob’s buried about 5 miles from my house. Good reminder to be careful.

Nice to see some snowmobile content with an emphasis on avalanche safety. Just a heads up @6:48 your explanation of faceting is backwards. Snowpack gains strength when grains start rounding. It's the angular faceted grains that do not bond well. Rounding = good. Faceting = Bad. The ball bearing analogy is used often by educators to describe unsupportive snow, but does not transfer well to talking about snowpack on a microscopic scale. Confusing, so perhaps we should come up with a new analogy!

I bet there was a persistent weak layer deeper down in the snowpack. That didn't constitute much of a snow pit.
@jacksarama1630
@jacksarama1630 4 жыл бұрын
Digging a pit isn’t practical for most situations sledding as we cover so many different aspects and elevations. Getting hands on with the snow is never a bad thing. There are multiple weak layers in that snowpack that we have seen the effects of all year riding this area
@SomeTechGuy666

@@jacksarama1630 These people didn't dig pits and 4 of them died. Think about that. Define practical ? kzbin.info/www/bejne/e6SlpoqIrquci68 Snow pack will vary with location, but digging a couple pits will at least give you an idea of what is going on. There is a way greater chance that a snowmobile will impact a deeply buried persistent weak layer than a skier. And a snowmobile covers 10x more terrain in a day than a skier does. If there is a persistent weak layer in the snow pack, a snowmobile will find it. Ride safe.

@@SomeTechGuy666 It sounds like you're suggesting that one cannot travel safely in the b/c without digging a pit? I think that's a common misconception based on an outdated education format. In an area like the Tetons with a well-funded avy center, it's entirely possible to travel safely in the b/c using information from the forecast, careful terrain selection, and more frequent less time consuming observations (visual clues, hasty pits, test slopes etc.) Plenty of ways to gather information, it's how that information is used to make decisions that counts. Your Wilson Glades example is a strawman - accidents have also occurred in instances when the group dug a pit immediately before dropping in.

I don't know if you guys realize it, but the gully you are riding in at @4:00 is a terrain trap. If the slope above you slides, you will be buried. The avalanche risk was considerable today. www.jhavalanche.org/ There was an avalanche fatality in the Grand Tetons today.
