A great thing about your approach on this channel is that it stimulates the time-honored woodcraft notion of 'making your own gear' or finding your own 'hacks.' For most of us, this is the time of year when we begin to think over the last season's final camps and to ponder what we might do to improve the kit for next year. IF we can connect with a fellow enthusiast, nothing is better than having a mutually respectful discussion of bushcraft ways and means. Following along with you on this process gave me the chance to think about my own 'druthers.' I prefer longer camps, so I am willing to put in the time to make a raised bed. I toss and turn at night and often fall off my insulative pads. Leaving the supports of a raised bed a bit high holds my system in place. In short, we have just had a lot of fun 'comparing notes' with you.

I love long camps, however I rarely ever get an opportunity to camp more than two nights in a row. Mostly a single night is all I can swing. I actually planned to build a raised bed/bench at the semi-permanent camp, but haven't revisited the idea yet. I say it time and time again on my videos, my favorite aspect of youtubing are the comments! I feel very fortunate to have been able to connect with the folks I have. Good people with valuable experience and great ideas! Have a Great Day James!

I had that same issue with Carinthia. Compression bag not being the same colour as the bag, i ordered Tropen woodland camo and the compression bag was army green. I returned it and ordered multicam tropen instead which was 100% multicam.

I've heard a lot of fantastic things about Carinthia sleeping bags. I'm glad I'm not the only one that is picky about that kind of thing. The way I look at it, If I'm paying for it I want exactly what I want.

I totally agree with the line of thinking keeping the bags in separate sacks. For most domestic uses it would likely be one bag or the other… I have slept in the snowy PNW mountains with just my SF1, SF bivvy, and TS1 liner. I was wearing layers of course to supplement but it was totally doable. I don’t have the SF2 but I do have a center zip down sleeping bag that I swap out with the SF1 when I go into cooler climates. Between the 4 pieces I can add and take away to suit whatever biome I’ll be adventuring into. About the only combo I’ve never used is all 4 together… but that’s mostly due to bulk than to how toasty warm it would be 😂 btw I cut the tags off mine too. Anyway, Great video brother. If you have a sec check out the video I have my channel on 3 of the 4 parts to my SF snugpak system. Cheers!!!

Thank you! I have the original USGI Sleep System. It is by far more heavy and bulky, however the temperature range is much greater than the SF Sleep System. It's a mission planning factor that I must consider when choosing my sleep system. I will most certainly check out your video during my lunch break today. I'm already subscribed. Have a very blessed day Brother!

Before I started filming at my SFS, I almost always slept in my hammock. I have a variety of top and bottom quilts so I can hammock camp year round. It is by far the most comfortable I have ever slept in the woods. I frequently modify or enhance pieces of my kit. I wish I had the capital to design and produce my own gear. Even buying the materials to make prototypes can run into a lot of money considering you need to produce item after item until you've got it right and then you have to field test it extensively and then extremely to ensure the item does what it's supposed to do and be durable enough to give the consumer years of reliable use. I just haven't won that lottery yet! Hahahahaaaa!!!! The marker is a temporary fix as it will eventually fade. If I paint it with flat acrylic or enamel paint it would pretty much be permanent. The outer garment I wore is a Multicam Anorak I purchased about 10 years ago. The zipper pull trick came straight from Mystery Ranch. After using their packs for about a decade, I've come to pay very close attention to what they do. Anytime I can adapt or modify things using their ideas, I try to do it. RIT manufactures Synthetic Fabric Dye, that I could dye nylon and other synthetics, however the color choices are limited. I can also use tie-dying technics to create a camouflaged like pattern. The dye is kind of pricey too, about $8.00 a bottle. Love and blessing to you and yours Kyle!

Just before you started talking about those white patches I was thinking that that camo pattern just does not wirk in Finland, but if that beige woul'd be white or really near, then in some cases like in a not that common silver birch forrests and when there is paches of snow on the ground and trees it can be decend. There are so many differen environments and sometimes only surprising or weird compared to what you have used to color combinations work.

Mostly if you see beige in finnish forest it is human skin, so it kind of defeats the purpose.

I have had the opportunity to spend time in Scotland, Ireland, England, Canada and From coast to coast in the U.S.. I am always amazed at the vast differences in forested areas. There is NO such thing as "All Terrain Camouflage". Crye Precision's Multicam works well in the area I live year round. "If" we have snow, I have over whites and some German snow camo that does the trick.

I own ILBE packs and usually cover odd colored gear with camo tarp (Hemp Jute Cloth). But you are very correct in a need to hide situation, you need your gear covered one way or another so keep up the interesting work with your gear, unless you address it; it will address you during an un necessary situation. Use Jute, you can tie camouflaging to it ie. bushes and or branches. It will break up your profile if needed.

Have you tried to Dye The Multicam with Walnuts colors.
@boonedockery7220
@boonedockery7220 Жыл бұрын
I have not. The primary reason is cost. It makes no sense to me whatsoever, but faded Multicam/OCP is more expensive than lightly faded UCP.... I have noticed that even if a company offers Multicam/OCP patterns doesn't mean the printing is done with the same quality. Helikon, years ago when the offered their "Camogram" pattern (basically an exact copy of Multicam) it faded far fast that Crye manufactured fabric. I believe that the walnut dyeing of Multicam would have a similar color variance as UCP, with subtle variances of pattern and green tones.

Picky is good...imo, for the prices of these types of gear, I mean it should be perfect, all around 5 stars or at least close. I'm looking for a MSS, even "slightly used" from random online surplus places: upwards of 6-700$...and who knows what your getting. I believe snugpak new, is around there somewhere maybe a little cheaper? But I would hope it's worth it.
@boonedockery7220

I "like" it. I personally think it's a bit of a snug fit compared to all of the other sleeping bags I own. It's also NOT a "Cold" weather bag. I used it all last winter and found it lacking in temperatures below 29 degrees Fahrenheit. My USGI MSS kept me toasty in sub zero temperatures.

I total agree, Why the hell did they put the tan/light flicks in multicam? One of the reasons I hate Multicam?
@boonedockery7220
@boonedockery7220 Жыл бұрын
Different manufacturers produce the Multicam pattern with varying color pallets. Crye's original pattern used more of a "BUFF" color as appose to light tan. When Multicam first hit the market 20+ years ago, I was very skeptical. I purchased a set from SEALs Action Gear in Canada (as they were the first, other than Crye to offer clothing to the general public) and did field tests and comparisons to all of the current military patterns to include several European patterns. I did so, from season to season for a year. Multicam performed very well in all seasons in the environment in which I live. None of the other patterns performed as well in all seasons. I did this study twenty years ago. Since then, many other patterns have been developed that perform as well as if not better, however the prolific use of Multicam ensures one con procure virtually any item of kit in the pattern. No other company has done this.

Have you ever heard Carinthia? They make outsanding military and outdoor equipment. Finnish army uses copy of Carinthia Defence 4 sleeping bag. Now, i’m looking for top-zip summer time sleeping bag for hammock camping, and i was quite sure i’ll purchase Carinthia Defence 1. Thanks to your Snugbak review, i’m not sure anymore. This bag is packed smaller than Carinthia’s similar. Only that its little bit cheaper.

Samuel, Thank You! I just looked at Carinthia's website. They have some amazing items! I feel that one of the reasons the Snugpak system packs smaller is that there is less material. If someone is larger than I in girth, they would not be able to use it. Carinthia's appears to be more spacious. I am 5'9" and 200lbs. I find the Snugpak system a little "SNUG". AND, more expensive.

Thank You! I really wish I would have been able to afford to purchase more of the Granite Gear compression sacks when I ordered the two I have. I never would have thought they would stop producing them. My Anorak was from SEALS Action Gear in Canada. I don't believe the company exists anymore. When Multicam first became known to the general public I fell in love with it. The first source I could find for Multicam clothing was SEALS Action Gear. I ordered a uniform blouse and trousers first. The fabric was the same medium-weight fabric the British were using for their DPM pattern uniforms (very soft and comfortable). I loved them and decided to order the Anorak. It's made with rip-stop fabric. I treat it with weatherproofing spray a couple times a year. It makes it water-resistant. I haven't really looked for them since I ordered mine but I did happen to see a Cheap OCP Anorak on Sportsman"s Guide but I have no idea as to the quality. I have been truly fortunate to acquire the items of kit that I have. The many manufacturers that have ceased production of so many items have shot themselves in the foot. The DEMAND for all of them are there. despite all of my attempts to relay this fact to the companies I have, has fallen on def ears. It is my opinion that if they no longer have the government contract, they cease production regardless to the civilian demand. They have a choice, continue or reintroduce production and get my money or get none. I sincerely wish I would have purchased more. They are the best compression bags I own. Okay, I just made myself very sad. I need to go spend time with my kit....😆😅😂😄😉👍

I don’t think actual SF guys are going to use the compression sacks - in my own practical usage, as well as what I’ve seen from real military usage, the sleep system is going to get stuffed in the bottom of a ruck, either with or without a WP bag, and I think this is probably the best practical use case for this gear, imho.

I respect that! I would venture to say that the vast majority of any product with the words "Special Forces" attached to it are not used by any "Elite Forces" (even if it were issued to them).
