I had the Microsoft Wireless Ergonomic Keyboard 7000 gifted to me that was a work place spare and thought keyboards could get no better. A year later the transceiver stopped working and I was gutted that Microsoft did not offer them for replacement. I was miffed that I was forced to upgrade until I spent a week on this bad boy! The Sculpt is absolutely perfect and the only complaint I have is that the space in the middle could of been a zoom slider but not a deal breaker. So comfortable and I cannot imagine myself ever typing on standard keyboard again. Love the ergonomic series! Great review.

My search for a keyboard definitely ends here. I've been literally stressing out looking for a nice set of ergo mouse and kbd. Having zeroed in on this mouse, I especially wanted the kbd to have a detachable numpad, which would help me keep my desk space flexible. This video looks like godsend. Many thanks!

to answer 3:20 , number pad is separated from the keyboard so you can place the number pad at the left side if you wish to. So that you can use both your hands using mouse and using number pad. (e.g. selecting cell then input value)

Matt Conlon That and also for right-handers it puts a lot of space between the keyboard and mouse which means your hands are always offset more to the left when typing and reaching in strange ways that causes soreness after a while. Numpads are great but realistically you only use them 1% of the day unless you're an accountant so it's not worth the constant strain just for that small use case. It's also nice how they made it into a mini-calculator with even a shortcut key to clear it.

Apparently, we both are talking about ergonomics, hence reduced pains and better productivity. *****, please enlighten us why it is a *wrong* reason to separate keyboard and keypad so you can place the keypad at the left side of the keyboard for better productivity?

The separated numpad is better for ergonomics as you don't have to stretch your right arm past your shoulder to use the mouse. I have been using a 84 key mechanical keyboard (No num pad) for the past year and have noticed a big improvement as a web developer/ programmer I don't have any need for a num pad. I think this Microsoft design is awesome makes me happy to see Microsoft is caring about design again.

Thanks for creating this review video. I just bought myself the Sculpt keyboard today, and I'm very pleased with it so far. I am a longtime ergo/wave keyboard user, previously on the Microsoft 4000. I was forced to replace my 4000 because of a coffee cup mishap. I'm sad to see that keyboard go, because my muscle memory had made such good friends with it. But this Sculpt keyboard is a really nice upgrade. The flat-travel keys are stealthy quiet on this device, and it didn't take me long to adjust to the finger reach to the backspace and delete keys. The separate numpad is excellent for me, because I can center my keyboard on my desk. I definitely recommend ergo keyboard users to try this Sculpt device!

Just a heads up, the removable keypad allows you leave the mouse closer to the keyboard so that minimal movement occurs and that you are in a more ergonomic position. At age 25 and falling apart (I know, it's pathetic) this feature is a godsend vs. the old 4000 from Microsoft. Goldtouch also makes a solid portable one (along with other ergonomic items) for those computing on the go.

Best keyboard I ever used. Currently using one and half year and had to replace mouse battery once and numpad once last week. It was a bit strange typing the first two weeks but after that I had rather trouble typing on the standard keyboards as they feel quite chugged together. The slight fall angle to the sides makes it very comfortable and as you mentioned while the mouse is bit big its super comfortable to hold. My biggest issue/complaint is the unusual button battery of the numpad. Its less standard here so had to go to an electronics store or order online (super markets and convenience stores just have the 3 standard types). Another minor thing is that people used to touch typing might misstype on the upper row as the balance on the Japanese layout is a bit differently balanced. Another thing which is personally no biggie but for some it might is the hand-rest. After already 3 months it seemed a bit scratchy and dirty as the surface seems to be rather weak. Nevertheless will buy again when this one fails on me.

I have the keyboard and I will buy it again when this fails (with the mouse). This is the first board that significantly improved typos. The build quality is the exact opposite of the design quality. Mine chews batteries. I use rechargeables for that reason. But I don't expect them to last. Secondly, if you think "this is light, I will take it with me everywhere I go" - forget it. The keys are tightly packed together, and get easily stuck. With no on/off switch, if you did not remove the battery prior to getting on the road ... kiss your battery (or charge) good bye. Sometimes the function keys get stuck simply from being used. If my battery is dead in the morning (unexpectedly soon) then I carefully go through the whole thing looking for stuck keys. One of the letters simply flew off (I had to put it back in, seems like it stays there). My right space key began to jam (fiddling around with an envelop opener helped it). Pads where wrists rest get noticeably worn out. I noticed that some people complain about the ergo of a mouse. It seems like ergo can be a hit or miss depending the structure of one's hand. For me its a total hit, both on board and mouse. Reliability - 1.5 stars, I don't expect it to last.

For what it's worth, I'm still rocking this thing. However, the number pad quit, which really kinda sucks. The mouse rubber under the thumb is pretty worn. I tried to buy a replacement mouse, but the dongles aren't universal, so I just threw that in my bag to go with my laptop... I will eventually get a new bundle.

did you replace the battery? It's my understanding that there's a watch-type battery in the keypad. My wired ergo keyboard just crapped out at work and someone had this one as an 'extra', so I plugged in the dongle and it works like a charm except for the numeric pad, which I use ALOT. I've been searching online thinking it needed a driver or ??? but apparently there's a batter in it. Will take home w/ me tonite to see if I can swap out as I have some watch batteries at home, plus I need a different screwdriver than the dime I was trying to use.

Is this keyboard easier to use than the Ergo 4000? I find pressing the space button with my thumb on the 4000 really aches the rsi due to the requirement of pressing it down. Hoping the keys will be easier to press on this.

The mouse looks like the kind you hold from the side, not from the top. Place your hand on the right side of it, kinda like if you were gonna shake someone's hand, or do a karate chop. Palm facing left, not facing down. Now grip the mouse. I believe it's supposed to be use that way since it's ergonomic. The scroll wheel may be easier to use that way as well.
@courtrage
@courtrage 10 жыл бұрын
in another review video they said to hold the mouse like you are holding and moving a glass of water on the desk, not to put your hand on top of it like old school mice. Let me know if that hand position more from the side helps thumb position and scroll wheel position. hope that helps.

Will be looking forward to replacing my 4000 ergo, which I will keep around as a spare. I think its genius to have the numpad seperate. Since I have an oversized mouse pad I would put the numpad to the right of my mouse. However I use the Anker vertical mouse, which now I'm wishing I had got the wireless version. Still a great setup though. Thanks for the video!

Just bought mine for $80 roughly through Amazon. Worth the price but you can also snag a deal here and there just for the keyboard and number pad for about $60, which is what I originally wanted since I'm not so sure about this bulbous ergo mouse that I have now.

They kept the num-pad off for better ergonomics - then you have JUST the letters to frap away on - i..e symmetrical and directly in front of you (if needed). Also, for me the no num-pad is a perfect solution if you are someone (like me) who uses the mouse nearly 100% of the time - in which case you need the mouse right in front of your right hand. If you had a long keyboard, with all the keys, including the num-pad next to the letters, that puts your right hand over to the right all the time and believe me, that is a major pain as you're constantly hitting the right hand side of the keyboard with your mouse..... One question, which I can't seem to find the answer to, is what is the dimension of *just* the keyboard ?

I dont get why the number pad is separate from the keyboard. I prefer the keyboard units with which the number pad is attached.
@MattConlonGeekDad
@MattConlonGeekDad 11 жыл бұрын
Only thing I can think is it's a lot easier to keep it from wobbling, being completely symmetrical... I could be wrong though. The other side of that coin is the pressure you put on the number pad when typing on it, DOES make it kind of rock on the desk... Being less massive it's easier to bounce it around a little on the desk. I'm considering finding some kind of tray to put them on together, so when I move the keyboard, the number pad moves as well....
@trentbosnic
@trentbosnic 11 жыл бұрын
I prefer it to be separate. It means you can use the mouse closer to the keyboard, which is more ergonomic because longer keyboards force your arms apart too much, and that puts pressure on your elbows.
@asadb1990

tcw I am used to having a complete keyboard and a mouse rather than a separate number pad. I used to find typing numbers in a laptop a chore because many of them didnt have an extended keyboard. But my current laptop has a complete keyboard making tasks requiring number entry much easier.
@MattConlonGeekDad
@MattConlonGeekDad 11 жыл бұрын
tcw That's a good point, the hands are a bit closer to on another. And taking a second look, even with the number pad separate, it's not quite exactly symmetrical anyway like I was saying.
@thuantta
@thuantta 10 жыл бұрын
It's separate so that you don't have to move your right arm very far to move the mouse. It reduces strain on your right arm which is one of the reasons why I am looking into this.

You buy a MS wireless mouse for about $35aud Logitech has a similar problem with their receivers in that unless you buy a replacement device there is no way to get a new receiver if you are outside the 12 month warranty and even if you are within that time table it's a challenge just to get one without the cost of a new device!

Pretty sure you have to manually remove the batteries or at least one battery. I've used this for my office work for a couple years and the only thing that seemed to run out of battery first was the number pad. Which I'd have to say is a pain to replace due to the battery being of the 3 volt disc style and you have to unscrew the back panel.

This keyboard is strange and not very intuitive at first. It takes time to get used with the new key placement, especially since you come from a Mac. For example, "\" is placed next to Enter on a Mac, here is placed above. Also, muscle memory will not serve you well as some keys are better than others and you'll misplace, a lot. However, after a few hours of use, your hands are getting used to it and you realize how comfortable and practical it is. That's the entire secret here. If you test it in a store, you'll hate it. It makes typing painful until you learn how to do it again. Once you do though, you'll end up thinking that most other keyboards suck. As with everyone else, what I don't like is the huge receiver and I'm not a big fan of the included mouse either. I can't even sell it, as there's only one receiver for both devices. So if you're not sure about keeping it, give it a try for a few days. It is an acquired taste. The only downside is that once you get used to the new layout, it's hard to work again on the old one. It's not that you'll forget all the keys but you'll make more typos with the old type of keyboard.

+Claud Rasberry Hey, thanks so much for your reply! I finally went to Microsoft and downloaded some PDF page and figured it out. Now I know why it was cheaper to buy the set...because both keyboard and mouse run off the same USB plug in. I had planned to separate them, using the new ergonomic mouse with the old keyboar which I use a lot, then using the new one on my other computer. I bought this back in October because I developed "trigger finger" and think it was the old mouse. The doctor gave a very painful injection in the finger joint. It gradually got better. I have a bad habbit of buying things and letting them sit in the box a while. Anyway, it feels like it is comimg back, so I finally need to start using it before the condition comes back.

Zhi Ming Wong Thanks! That's much appreciated. I've never been comfortable in front (or in this case, behind) the camera!

You are doing a great job for someone who is uncomfortable in front/behind the camera... Keep it up and you will get used to it in no time, and may even loved it sooner or later :)

My last three videos were done in one take. The five or so prior... Maybe 7? So I'm more comfortable, and when you stop and remind yourself that, YES you know what you're talking about, and you're mostly just sharing your opinion that you have every right to have... It's a lot easier. Viewers are just people. :)

This is the biggest load of crap hardware from Microsoft, I have ever owned. Nice to look at and stylish, but absolute junk to use. Got it as a birthday present a year ago, part payment, I fulfilled the 50% balance today as this is an expensive keyboard mouse set combo in my country. Has already been replaced once under warranty due to poor functionality of Fn keys, one of the issues again, now supplier won't swop out as it's just outside it's 1 year warranty??????? this is a manufacturing defect ongoing with the brand and model and warranty is then nonending and should have been a payment return. SO BUYER BEWARE.Today it finds itself trashed into a million pieces in the dustbin, had one too many enough's with this rubbish. Just one year in, here are the issues with it, and I thought they were to do with the Windows 10 upgrade, found same issue on other computers and from W7 to W10. Compared to my previous A4Tech fong kong wireless keyboard and mouse combo that lasted ten years and still works as a backup and for use on my client s hardware !!!!!! go figure 1. Poor flimsy Fn keys, especially F5 and F6 constantly getting stuck down, and have to flick and prod, sometimes with toothpick to avoid damage to get them out and up again 2. Flimsy and unnecessay right hand switch to change mode between Fn and facility keys. Mine became terribly loose and spongy with regular use, so another year would have seen it totalled. 3. General poor response on keypads while typing, my wife a speed typist said worst keyboard she has ever used. 4. Finish constantly needs cleaning as it looks very grubby after a weeks use, this is especially true of the rubber cloth type material finish on the palm rest. In fact my right side is pulling out from under the cover anchoring it, has come unglued or undone !!!! and it is already looking worn due to hands resting on it. 5. And what gave it it's death knell out of my frustration, no matter what battery chemistry used, or rechageables, would eat through batteries in three months, all previous owned and used wireless keyboards would be a year plus, and within one week of fresh batteries would start typing garbage, would not allow any typing or renaming of things, and W10 would ding ding ding while I was trying a normal keyboard entry / function. Calc would open on it's own until I tapped the Calc key a few times, and in this the list is endless where i fond my selg banging the keyboard to get it right. My perpective was the battery housing, with it's poor magnetic cover to hold them in place. again poorly designed and allowing them to become dislodged with typing use. 6. The first set of batteries supplied with the keyboard eventually leaked and damaged the magnetic cover finish inside, poor fonh kong cheapo's I believe, as I was not familiar wit the brand name / manufacturer So that's me done with this set, NEVER AGAIN, and already replaced in an afternoon with an old solid USB faithful. I will be posting this on a few sites, and maybe a MS representitive sees and takes note and reports back home. Andrew

YOu have to curve your hands inward.... STUPID ASS DESIGN! Tested it at the store and having that big ass gap in between further apart makes typing not easy! Avoid this shit!
