Totally love this guy! I have carried one of these for many years! Never had to use it, but would not hesitate if necessary. I also ALWAYS carry a knife, But would prefer to use the kubaton as it is considered non-lethal, but have no problem using a knife to save my life & ending the life of an attacker.

Hi Matt, sorry i was gone, and missed class. I received a kubaton type flashlight for Christmas and will start carrying it on a daily basis basis. I believe the greatest strength of the kubaton, is how quickly the the techniques can be delivered, for self defense. I compare it to the surprise of receiving painful scratches from a feline's claw. When it occurs, the cat is given the ability to escape, from its aggressor. But as you instruct, like any other means of self defense, it is critical to train and become very proficient with its use. Any pen is a great defense tool. In the 50s and early 60s I carried a #3 pencil in school for protection from bullies.

Was thinking of getting one but I couldn’t find any reasonable videos. A lot were just pushing the brand and not really giving information on the kubotan! Thanks for the class! I like kubatons, but I haven't carried one in a long time. I've missed four days of walking because the snow is too deep in my driveway. I hope to have heavy equipment tomorrow to move the tons of snow that need to be moved to get my driveway accessible again. The road to my house has been closed, and that causes tremendous anxiety as well. That has cut into my training. Things were a bit better today, and I've tried to do some digging myself. I can only move snow for about ten or fifteen minutes at a time before I become too tired to continue. I then have to rest for several hours. Even so, I've moved some snow today. That has to count as some kind of workout. When I lift a shovel of snow, I bend at the knees and turn the movement into a kind of squat. I think I've moved enough snow that I could force my car out of the driveway in an emergency. I'll need the heavy equipment to move snow so that I can get garbage service and propane delivery. I still feel a little better that by working a little at a time as I was able, I cleared enough that maybe I could get out on my own. My last session outside ended twenty minutes ago, even with gloves, I let my fingers get too cold. They are still a little numb. Pushing myself is always odd. I didn't push myself yesterday because an ambulance couldn't have gotten here if things had gone wrong. Today, a few vehicles were able to travel, so I was willing to push myself. I often think of your encouragement when I do push myself. Some people think that my living here by myself is too dangerous, but I like this place. I think my pushing myself in all of this training has better prepared me to do what I must do if a situation requires great effort.

Shoveling snow definitely counts as exercise! You are also wise not to push it when the ambulance can’t get through.

@@pasquinilli unarmed combat is the quickest, as you don't need to reach for a weapon first. Mind you, weapons can be made out of anything you can grab hold of. I've seen someone pretend to fall first, as if drunk, but they had spotted a heavy stone on the path and as they sprung back up the stone was smashed straight at the temple of the assailant, which knocked them out cold. It was vicious and bloody, but it worked. Most people carry car keys or even just a hand full of coins can be used to great effect - by throwing at the eyes for example. Having said all this, sometimes the most prudent action is to give the thug what they want, within reason, and walk away to fight another day. I know a skilled martial artist who nearly lost an eye when he tangled with the wrong person who had a knife (which he didn't see at first)

Matt, i forgot to add, that the "slap jack" was referred to also as "sap" or a "beavertail" by members of the PD. It was stitched leather, flat, contained a lead weight and a retaining strap to secure it and was carried in a small "sap pocket" on the uniform pants. It actually did look similar to a beaver's tail. Due to the stitched edges, it had a tendency to cut or lacerate (the skull which was prohibited). The flat portion is what was used to make contact not the edge. It was also used more commonly as a "door knocker" and was eventually replaced. Doug.

Way back in the Neolithic (1977), when I was in Kindergarten, Officer Friendly from the local PD did a presentation at a school assembly. I Remer he preferred his stick and blackjack to the Mace spray he carried. He Saud the problem with mace was the over spray and the fact that the cops had to ride in the car with the subdued suspect. I remember thinking the blackjack was cool...

@@studer6884 I started on the PD in 1977. We were issued mace, but unless a person was basically stone sober it usually had little value.. In situations where the subject was under the influence of alcohol, drugs, emotional or psychological issues it proved to be pretty much worthless..

HI Sensei Matt it seems that I go many places where weapons are frowned upon so it seems the best option I could come up with was just put aa mini maglite on key chain? as I do think I seem to recall reading somewhere it seems it was actually made by a fan of the kubotan that worked at maglite and I guess as long as I dont add the dna catcher perhaps its potentially more legal ??? thoughts please thank you ????

If you carry a Kubotan which is not designed to be a Keychain or something innocent is that illegal? I have a very nice stick cut from titanium but wonder if carrying it in my side pocket is the same to law enforcement as carrying a concealed banned weapon.

Regarding breaking a car window for emergency escape ; Aim for a corner, they're the weakest points.
