While I generally like the option of using a tool like the kubotan, it could legally be determined to be excessive force if you are using it against an attack like an unarmed punch.

I disagree, I don't believe what you're saying comes from a point of legal wisdom on the subject. If you are actually defending yourself (and not willingly participating in a street fight) then we see many cases of justified and justifiable defensive weapon use in a situation in which the defender is in genuine danger. Additionally, I see these tools primarily marketed towards women. Your mom probably doesn't have to worry about the legal repercussions of defending herself with a small stick, especially if the attacker is a large male stranger. (Not to say that your mother isn't capable of beating off other men by herself, I'm sure she has plenty of experience with that)

This is incorrect. If you were to use a weapon like this to assault someone, it would be considered an aggravating factor. However, if defending yourself from a physical attack, there are very few states where you might be in legal peril. "Excessive force" would come into play if you deployed a kobo in self defensive, then continued to beat the other person with it after they had been pacified, subdued, or tried to flee.

I'm very sorry to say that but eventually you are doing it wrong . I May explain my self ; This kind of kubotan is an Hammer object not a slice one , you are actually using your kubotan like a karambit . To improve your weapon's power you need to see it for what it is . A kind of Hammer. Like an Hammer fist it is here to crush and disable opponent mobility and members. Hit knees, shoulder, elbow , stomach , arms, legs , head , face , all you can to disable your opponent but don't use it to slice , pick a knife instead.

Might be a good point, but from my point of view, there are several options. You can use it as a very light hammer. But without a nice shank it's not how I would use it as I have to get pretty close anyhow and it doesn't create the same impact. But I have to admit I usually fight with an axe and there the shank is important for the impact. I would consider it as a stick. So I can use it to have more kinetic energy on a small point when I hit the opponent, but I can also use it to catch strikes, redirect them or use it to extend my strikes. Also I can simply use it lie a lighter in my fist. In general I wouldn't consider it as a weapon that I have to use it in a different way, I can use it flexible just as I need it and change the grip if useful. Also to use it like a hammer as you said. But you seem to limit your options if you insist on a specific use.

Nice. I learned similar techniques a few weeks back with the Tanbo. As for the straight hammer type thrust to the face, shit would hurt, but it's a small target, the orbital, the eye, the mouth etc. I'd personally go to the body, the solar plexus, liver, or inner ribs. Also when you have the Kubotan around the neck it can be used to move the opponent similarly to how you moved the arm out of the way. Lastly there are also several chokes. Would love to see some kubotoan choking techniques. Tactical flashlight?

Sir you are class. And I was using those when i was 12. I can advise you that your focus on your kubotan is a weakness in your game. On the first block. You leave your open hand on the dudes neck, when it really could be the ending strike. Your Kubotan is causing you as Bruce Lee would say and I'm paraphrasing Anticipating the outcome through the use of a single preferred weapon is a weakness. To let a hand lie on an opponent without making use of it is not efficient. It could have been the finishing blow with the Kubotan then ready for next attacker.

Buy a small, bright flashlight. At night, flash him in the eyes so he won't see your strike coming. Plus, you probably need to see more often than you need to fight.

Nice move I need to try to so that I could do. When I'm in karate it could be helpful like I said you got to get up close impersonal if you want to try to hit him hard in low it's all about. Hand combat to try not to get too close show him who's boss and take control 🥋👊💪😉👍👊🥋

You are a trained Martial Artist with serious fighting skills so for you to have that palm stick makes no sense whatsoever. I grew up playing Ice Hockey and have a pretty good idea of an individual who has needs to fight.

Let's see this pressure tested at full speed and impact where the dance partner does not feed you the techniques. Who really fights like this? Take a look at Active Self Protection where there are videos of real assaults and fights....none of them look like this hubud/lubud happy slappy hands business, and nobody stands toe to toe like this with a little pocket stick. Self defense is what you do TO someone, not WITH someone. This is just like kata, it is forms not substantive. A real fight or assault never looks like this and never lasts this long. If you have the time to square off and duel like this then you should have had time to avoid the situation in the first place. Chances are you won't even have time to pull out your little popsicle stick. Mc Dojo life.

I was thinking how odd it looks that the other guy just stands there with his arm out. I learned the importance of combinations as a little kid.
