How you introduce characters in your writing can influence what your reader thinks of your writing as a whole.
People empathise and identify with characters, rather than plot. So if you can find unique and interesting ways to introduce your characters, it'll be more immersive and more impactful.
In this video I go over a bland way to introduce characters to your writing, then a more interesting example. I also take a look at the character introduction of one of the most famous characters of all time - Harry Potter!

The most important thing when you're new to writing, or a beginner at anything really, is to keep writing. Keep putting down words, paragraphs, plots, characters, you will learn as you go, and you can use the experience of the writing community to fill in the gaps where you're not sure.

I'd add: avoid introducing more than two new characters on a single page. They'll just get blended together and confused. It is really confusing when the first thing you see a new character do is something that's unusual behavior for them. That's especially bad if they're only behaving that way for the sake of the plot. (For example, if a brutal henchman shows mercy on the main character in the first chapter it's just confusing if he's supposed to be completely ruthless later) How a character sounds (or smells) can be as evocative as how they look. The character will make a stronger impression if you give them something interesting to say or do right away. If you haven't seen a character for a few chapters, don't just assume the reader will remember them by name. Especially if you meet them again in a different place. You may need some kind of tag or callback.

Those are all really great points. I’d never thought about regulating character behaviour before but you’re right. The reader doesn’t know the character and will assume their behaviour is a baseline for them. Thanks for this! 😊

While you make decent points. I would add though that sometimes a villain behaving in an unusual way can make them even more interesting if it’s written well. For example: if a killer absolutely massacres someone when he’s introduced, and then later in the story, he stalks someone and has an advantage to take them out, but doesn’t. That immediately in my opinion is gonna raise questions like “Ok why did he let them live? Does he has a soft side? Does he know them? Is it just too easy for him?”
