In this week video, I am reviewing Klipsch Reference Series 12" 400W Powered Subwoofer. Model number R-120SW. This subwoofer has a frequency response of 29-120Hz and packs 200W RMS.

Try this setup if you’re interested. Run an Onkyo speaker calibration but set your subwoofer to 25% volume to make sure the subwoofer level from the receiver fall in or between -3 to 0 db after checking the calibration results. This should take care of your auto power working even when listening to low volumes. And for the hum, trying changing your subwoofer cable .

@Xavier Flavor it’s very good for the money. I have 2 SVS 12” ported subs hooked up in my main system in a much bigger room. I have this one hooked up in a smaller room 15’ x 16’, and it keeps up a lot better than I thought it would. I have the gain set a little less than half, so there’s quite a bit of headroom.

Also, I have my Subwoofer running LFE and control by the EQ App by my Pioneer elite vsx-lx503 it tweaks it however you want. Much easier than going to the back of the Subwoofer every time.

I feel your pain because I own 10 subs but I live in a house where there are almost always people home but what a waste of a powerful sub. I got a break yesterday though and rattled the house. Hopefully the cats upstairs weren't traumatized

Only negative is it only plays down to 29hz... My old heco victa prime 252a plays down to 22hz but with half the rms power. Saving for an svs sub!

So I have the same sub awesome bass for the most part but I'm trying to find the sweet spot for movies. Running denon s960h with crossover on 120hz gain at half and frequency response on sub turned to LFE there seems to be alot of air chuffling in low frequency movies. Any way to fix this?

This is a great mid priced sub..I have the same one in 10 inch..I prefer the tightness of a ten over the boom of a 12.

No you won't. Klipsch signature tweeter horns are usually bright enough to sound balance,clear, and good over bass. I just recently purchase a pair of R-41M and ran them with this sub. It sounded great. Crazy considering how small the speakers are. (Review coming soon btw for the R-41M).

I see in comments that it is to be put in a truck inside the same cabin and you put it in the trunk. Does it sound good? I also want to put it in a trunk I have a Mitsubishi mirage g4 sedan and it is the only video where I look at what they put in the trunk you can tell me about your experience. So the floor standing speakers im looking at are rated at a max wattage of 400w per tower, but most receivers only push out a couple hundred on the high end. How would I get anywhere near 400w per tower?

Look at the RMS of the speakers, not the total wattage. All speakers have a power handling range where they perform the best. Just find a receive that is within that RMS range.

Great review, very informative! Couple questions. I want a sub that will do some great lower frequency fill that my Elac UB5's cant hit. Does it sound clean and full at lower music and movie volumes? I don't need earth shattering just mid volume fill for movies and music. Also, Does it come with footpads?

If you using a receiver with a sub out slot, you only need to use the one with one rca. All you have to do is plug the wire into the Left RCA input on the back of the subwoofer.

I'm looking for a sub for my pc. I go some really nice speakers but I need some base. I am using it on a PC and need to know if its self powered so I dont have to have a receiver. You need to buy speakers and a HT amplifier. Subwoofer just produce low frequencies.

Just a thought unless you need a ton of bass out of your tower speakers go ahead and pull them away from the wall at least a foot or you'll get way to much bass out of them also your sub try turning it on an angle having it in a corner on both sides will deaden the lows. Just saying....the hum is fine as long as it's a low hum most subs have a slight hum to them...

The Towers port are front fire, they don’t need to be away from the wall… Also, I resolved the hum issue, I upgraded the cord to one that had thicker shielding.

Yeah, Something doesn't sound right. Check your AV reciever settings. Sound like the subwoofer's pre-out setting in the reciever might be turned down. If that's the case, no matter how much you turn up the gain on the back of the subwoofer the sound will be low.

I think you'll find it is real copper. its just not solid copper.

That Humming you have is coming from the Subwoofer Cable. Get a much better double or triple shielded Cable. You will not have this problem.

I'm definitely going to end up trying that. Crazy thing is the hum is only present without the reciever on. Once the reciever is on, the hum is non-existent. Never had the issue with my Polk sub.

@@JeromeJunior That let me know it definitely was the problem. I had a cheaper unshielded subwoofer cable when I had my Polk Subwoofer and I bought Klipsch then ordered a nice 8ft cable off Amazon that fixed my problem.

Good stuff. I just got the same one. With only one out put from my receiver, should I just connect my cable to the white (left) input of the subwoofer or should I get a "Y" adopter to plug into both (left and right) inputs of the Sub?
