You could go for the "no-water-deck" like Brent is doing in Sho'nuff. Have no water through the gasket, and run the water to the head externally. Would not be too bad considering you are already running an electric water pump

Makes sense that water could have gotten in there. Not sure how warmed up the engine was or what steps were taken to make sure everything was warmed up properly when the pass was made. but if the head and gaskets aren’t thermally expanded enough to working conditions, than when the shift was made, the pressure the engine was making relieved itself and thus allowed the water to pass through the small gap in the gasket where it was already worn in. Hope to see you back at it soon I love the build guys!

Time for a closed deck billet block. Because yes, a closed deck wouldn’t have the same issue. There’s no water crossing through water jackets between the block and head in a closed deck setup. The water travels through external hoses from block to head in those setups meaning no head gasket failure would ever lead to a hydro lock.

I'd definitely get that new block O-Ringed. You can do it yourself with a kit or get it professionally done on a Mill. Being that it happened on shift transition from high to low rpm it definitely lifted the head. At high rpm/High boost it'll actually pressurize the cooling system when it lift's, then when shifting that pressurized water has to go somewhere and returns between the gasket and block into the cylinder. At high rpm/High boost it'll actually push the water out between the head and block and blow all over the engine bay. Water intrusion back into cylinder usually occurs at low RPM/low boost after a high boost occurrence. I'm working on a simple strain gauge system that attaches between the head and block that can measure head lift very accurately. I'd like to get with Holley so they can provide an additional CAN port for the interface. It's very cheap and about the thickness and size of a postage stamp, just a handful of Electronic components and some code. So far it has worked very well after you filter out all the engine harmonics, you'll be surprised how much lift there is during normal mild boost operation. It can also be used for rod stretch, bolt stretch, etc using RFID and some clever programming for the internal's.

Id be measuring the stretch in the surviving rod.. there is a chance the billet alloy rods are stretching on each pass increasing the compression, pro drag teams measure the stretch in between each pass and mix and match them to keep them even, but once they pass a certain length they are no longer use able, would be very interesting to compare the surviving rod length to the new ones..

Looks like you can make a nice little coffee table out of the left over parts. Would be bad ass conversation piece for sure. Good luck on getting it back together with the new motor

I was one that suggested the bullet block off the rip. That being said you are right that catastrophic failure would have happened anyways. As for the PTSD rod and piston my house is open for discussion of your problems 🤘

Kyle going to a setup that you are no longer passing water through the head mating surface would solve the issue. Someone posted here about sho nuff going the same route would keep water from getting in which is the route to go. You are pushing way to much air to have water passing through the heads. Just isolate the head and block and you will save more rods and pistons from having PTSD

I completely agree with Kyle it's not worth the price when you are already fastest in the world and still have quite a bit left on the table with the cheaper set up that was in it and alot to learn and should know before doing it on an expensive block and probly not go much faster then now.

20psi water pressure not going into a bore when turbo is pushing 50 psi in the cylinder, hg goes boost pushes water out radiator very quick, blow hoses off, the rpm bouncing on launch control / 2 step breaks rods!

Let's see that intercooler inspection. Very interested to see what that looks like.

I think it's time to go for the best of the best parts. You have the MR2 record time to push it. Keep it for ever love your videos keep on pushing.

What about getting another OE block and upgrading the sleeves and do a half filled concrete block...then don't run any water in it and try and see if your a fan of having no coolant system...you could always fill the block the rest of the way or still run water in it with a half fill..or reach out to TKM performance and see if they could do top fuel hoops in the head and block..you could still have jvr do the rest of the machining...just a thought..because you never hear of anyone having head gasket issues thats had that service done..

Run billett block, but dry deck it. Weld up the head waterpassages, then run a solid coppergasket with fire rings. run cooling in and out of the block, and in and out of the head.

Build another stock block and get your chassis on point. Dial in the chassis at lower boost and plan for the billet. You got this Kyle. Do you brother

It's still crazy how strong that block is :D Totally understand going with a regular block as there is still quite a bit of time to won in other setting besides the engine... Which was solid as hell. RIP

Kyle, one thing I've noticed over the years of watchin'...YOU'RE ALL IN!!! MR2 world record? ✅ Blown motor? (valve 'tick'-0...Jamie's 80psi, ½ motor-10; this is a solid 9)✅
