Booster Plug works very well in Europe (Austria), smooth low speeds in 1st to 3rd gear, no stalling anymore. In my case reduced the popping quite a lot. (Speed Twin)

Does the stalling off the engine has anything to do with installing the X pipe or other tuning off the motor? Until now i did not have any problems and thinking about a X pipe, thats why i ask.

Yes apparently it does for some, it hasn’t been an issue for me though. The booster plug is just a precautionary measure for me, not a necessity.

Good Morning, the booster plug gives the impression to the ECU that the outside temperature is lower than it really is. So the ECU cares for a richer oil/petrol mix. Correct? But normally the lambda sensor should als react in a way to bring the mixture back to normal.

Yeah I’m not 100% sure how it all works together. It could be all miss informations for all I know! I did however smell a richer exhaust initially but that could have adjusted itself and I don’t really notice it anymore. I’m going to flash my ECU very soon and remove the booster plug anyway.

My Speed Twin stalls sometimes and im only at 200 miles. if I clutch in and coast to a stop then downshift it dies

That’s a bummer, I guess I’ve been fortunate that has never happened to me. From what I read the booster plug wouldn’t be helpful unless you have aftermarket exhaust and cat-delete. In stock form if it’s been an issue it might be worth asking the service department and see if they can tweak the ECU. No new bike should stall like that. Good luck with the issue, I hate to hear bad experiences with this amazing bike! 👍🏻

First and foremost - when you slow down let go of the throttle completely. Train yourself to close the throttle when you are decelerating - a half open throttle causes popping. On FI bikes DO NOT “blip” the throttle when decelerating. Doing this will cause popping and fool the ECU into thinking you are accelerating thus compounding the problem. FI engines depend on many sensor inputs to tell the ECU how to respond, by “blipping” you are tricking the ECU into thinking the engine is doing one thing while you are actually doing another. Check the exhaust pipe for leaks at the header gaskets and if you have a 2 part pipe (muffler and headers are 2 separate parts) check the band clamps and gaskets there. You can do this using smoke, so get out the incense, cigarettes, cigars, etc or just blow out a match - and with the bike running pass this smoke around the exhaust ports and/or the junction of the headers to the muffler. If there is a leak you will see the smoke either get sucked in or blown around. If there is a leak ask yourself: When/if you changed or removed and reinstalled the exhaust did you remove the old crush gaskets from the header ports (yes they ARE in there) and install new ones? These crush gaskets are not reusable items, just because you only put 5 miles on them does not mean they are still good. Crush gaskets like these are designed for one-time use - once they are installed they are crushed and become “used” and cannot be used again. Did you torque down the header bolts to the appropriate torque and then retorque them after riding a few times? Check them again to make sure they are still torqued to spec. On a 2 part exhaust are the band clamps (where the muffler and headers meet) torqued down to the appropriate ft/lbs? Check them again to make sure they still torqued to spec. Is the header pipe sitting square in the exhaust pocket? Sometimes it appears they are when they aren’t. You can verify this kind of exhaust leak by looking for carbon trails. If you’ve changed exhausts did you check that the header acorn nuts didn’t bottom out before the header flange tightened properly to seal pipes into the head? Some aftermarket exhaust systems have thinner exhaust flanges so you may need a washer under the acorn nut to make up the difference. Be sure the throttle body/carb butterflies are closing completely. You can do this by removing the air cleaner and pushing on the butterflies with your finger. There should not be any movement at all. If they do move close then check all throttle cables and adjust accordingly. A throttle body/carbs that are out of sync can cause popping and uneven idling. This adjustment takes a special tool and if you are not confident working on the throttle body it may be best done by your dealer. If there are no leaks in the exhaust then check for leaks in the smog system. Are all the hoses snug and in place? Are all the hose clamps snug and holding the hoses where they belong? If you’re not really tied to the smog stuff being there I would recommend removing it entirely to prevent this from even being a possibility (desmogging the bike usually fixes about 95% of decel popping).

i suggest you to place the metal tip in front of the engine, not behind, as the cooler it reads the air temperature, the more it makes the bike enrich the gas and air mixture.

Did you notice less popping? I have the same as you V&H, DNA, X-pipe, no snorkel. Mine pops too much. I don't mind a little popping but not constantly when letting off the throttle. Next step is a booster plug. Before I spend my cash would be interested to know if it improves things. Thanks for the video Adam.

Corvair140 You’re still get popping, I put a Booster Plug on my Triumph America 2012 and on decel it popped like crazy, all I can deduce is it gives you more fuel and not as jerky on the throttle 🤷‍♂️ I also put a set of TORS on with a dealer remap but still popped. Definatly more power though which was good 👍

@@pete2109 I had a T120 with decat, v&h with baffles removed, dna filter, no snorkel on a standard map and it never popped at all. So it must be the fuelling map.

Hi Adam, love your videos. I just picked up a 2020 speed twin and I'm really annoyed with the engine breaking in low gears. As soon as I get off the throttle, the bike lunges me forward. Is this something that the booster plug fixed for you? Did you experience similar behavior prior to installing it? My speed triple is buttery smooth in comparison and I think they use the same ride by wire.

When the engine breaks in, that will help, and I noticed the biggest difference when I installed an x-pipe. That freed up the stock back pressure and smoothed it out a lot. I suspect that it will never have the same feel as the triple as it has a shorter stroke than the ST, the centrifugal mass of the crank inherently would make the triple smoother than The ST will ever be.

new rider here, what is the difference of buster plug and power commander?

Power commander will adjust more parameter, booster plug basically tricks the ecu into thinking it’s colder out than it is thus making the ecu run a bit richer to compensate for open exhaust, x-pipe and free flowing air filters. I have since removed the booster plug in favor of an ECU reprogramming flash. For roughly the same cost.

A lot of people like this mod but there are others that claim it's snake oil and richening the mixture like that can hurt performance. What are your impressions of what it actually did for you? Did you have the low speed snatchy throttle feel and if so what does it feel like now in each of the riding modes? Do you have the throttle spacers and if so did you put them in before this mod? How's the popping now?

I have the exact same set up as Adam. The booster plug does help with the low speed snatchy throttle. Helps just a little with the excessive popping though.

City commuting, yes! Not long haul highly trips though. It could be done but not as comfortable as it would be on something meant for that. Two up I’d day the same thing, yes for around town or twisties but not long straight windy trips in straight lines.

It helped a bit with decel popping & low speed snatchy throttle, my speed twin didn’t have the extreme issues as some have experienced so it was a subtle improvement.

@@AdamCroll My Speed Twin is completely "stock" , has the standard pipes and the catalytic converter. I do get a bit of a snatchy throttle at low rpm when in Sport mode. In Rain mode it is a bit better. Guess I might try one of these plugs on my stock exhaust system :)

Thank you for posting Adam. I would strongly suggest removing the Air Temp Probe out of the air box and re-locate it under the seat. The probe works best where the air is relatively still and ambient temperature. The inside of the air box has fast-moving/cooler air passing through it. #bellacorse

Booster Plug is a poor solution. It just adds fuel everywhere... It has no ability to determine what areas are lean, and what areas are rich. It just adds a given percentage of fuel everywhere, and that's not ideal. Just get it tuned and call it a day.
