Boot repair using Sugru

In this video I repair a pair of work boots using some Sugru. Because work boots are expensive and can cost over £100 it makes sense to repair them to get a few more months use from them before buying a new pair. Sugru is the perfect material for the repair as it sets like rubber after 24 hours. The last time I used Sugru was to make an electrical cable easier to unplug- • Sugru | Mouldable glue

I've used some Sugru on a few things. It's pretty useful. I have a pair of Wolverine boots I'm going to try it on. Most boots end up cracking at the bend in the toes. These boots are sewn where they'd normally crack. So, of course the stitching is gone now. Glad to see more folks using Sugru. I run into so few people that have even heard of it, I was worried it would go away.

Video tip: next time you film a black or very dark object, don't do that on a light background. The contrast is to high so you lose detail. If you use a darker background and well placed lights you can see more detail.

Thanks, this was filmed on my kitchen table and the white piece of corex was the only thing I had- apart from the table cloth (which is yellow) Thanks for the comment

Thanks Michael, I did think about that as I have a new pair of boots waiting to be worn, but I only have pink sugru left- perhaps I could start a new trend ;-) Thanks for the comment

Great job of mending. I'm all for getting a bit more mileage out of boots etc. Funny thing I was only saying to my wife on Sunday (before I saw this) about picking up bits of swarf in my boot soles when I worked in industry, and how they would work their way in until they stuck in my foot. She had something in her shoe, and it reminded me. As an aside, it's possibly worth trying beach / snow mode on the camera for white background shots.

Thanks, yes I did not realise that the white corex that I put on the kitchen table was causing such a problem until I got the footage onto the computer for editing, by which point it was too late as I had repaired the boots.

Dewalt boots are fantastic...i had a pair of Dewalt steel toe hiking style boots that lasted years.Waterproof membrane and very comfortable.

Yes, these are one of the few boots that actually meet all site safety standards being waterproof, anti-static, oil resistant, heat resistant, steel toe cap, steel midsole, chemical resistant etc. On top of that, they are very comfortable. I can actually get free boots on site but I tried a pair once and they absolutely killed my feet, so I prefer to buy my own. Thanks for the comment

lol, firms always give you £10 a pair boots that are like wearing breezeblocks on your feet with cardboard uppers lol. Sometimes worth it to spend a lot more on your own pair and look after them.

I 've repaired my boots I usually get Dr.Martens safety boots being very comfortable but being a plumber I seem to spend quite a bit of time on my knees and wear out the toe through to the steel caps in no time , but I use plumbers gold or stixall in black to blend in a patch on the area which works a treat and extends the life of the boots by a few more years.

I also have a pair of DR Martens and they are very comfortable but not quite up to the site standard where I work, although they do now make a pair that are up to site standards. Plumbers gold is ace ;-) Thanks for the comment

It lasted a couple of months but the boots were knackered to be honest. They kept wearing a hole in my socks at the toe, so I got a new pair. Thanks for the comment

If I was doing this amount of work to my boots. I would want to get at least an extra year out of them. Not a few months. Looks like a good product to use for the job tho. How much does the glue cost?
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 7 жыл бұрын
They might last another year, I don't know to be honest but I'll keep an eye on them. The cheapest seller on ebay sells it for about £6.30 for a pack of three including delivery fave.co/2lTkRrf I will have paid a similar price as I bought mine from ebay.

@highroller8877
@highroller8877 7 жыл бұрын
JalexpUK yeah I know it only 3 minutes of work but if the shoes are only gonna last a few more months like he said in the video. There isn't much point in spending the few bucks and a few minutes to fix them. But if you did this and they last a year or more then it would be worth the time and coin to do it.

When you have to buy your own boots, it pays to look after them. I clean and polish mine on a regular basis. And of course they are worn in and very comfortable. Hopefully I wont damage them to that extent but now I know how to repair them :D

Great idea. It was a bit difficult to see. I think the white background may have affected the camera, but still a good way to extend the life of expensive boots. Thanks.

Thanks Miles, I filmed it in the kitchen as the garage is freezing cold at this time of year but next time I'll use the garage as the lighting is better in there. Thanks for the comment

I don't think it's the quantity of light that was an issue more the camera's white balance. It was exposing for all the white thus underexposing the black. Lots of very dark and very light in the same shot one is always going to lose out.

White scenes tend to fool automatic exposure systems in photographic equipment. You very often see pictures taken on skiing holidays being too dark for the same reason. It's usually best to film stuff like this against mid grey backgrounds. BTW the reverse problem tends to happen if filming against predominantly dark backgrounds - the camera over-exposes. Hope this helps.
