Thanks for your kind comment. John's commitment to helping investors until the very end of his life is a real motivator for me. I hope you find the rest of the Boot Camp Series helpful.

You are such a wonderful teacher. I am sure all of your viewers would agree that we are so fortunate to have you share all of your knowledge with us. Thank you so, so much!

Thanks for the supportive comment. I really enjoy teaching and feel blessed to have people who find the work helpful. I would not be half the teacher I am without the work of Daryl Bahls and Chris Pedersen. They both put in 100s of volunteer hours each year. And I believe some our best work is yet to come.

Thank you for sharing your logic and wisdom, Paul! There are thousands of people who have tried to tell me the future. You are the only helper who has told me you can’t tell the future, but have a strategy designed to outperform over the long term in a broad variety of scenarios. The advice has encouraged me to have a broad portfolio across asset classes domestically and internationally!

Bless you for making these. There is so much info online that it is overwhelming to discern good vs bad financial advice. Starting out feels almost impossible. The way you talk and present information is so comforting and relatable. Thank you so much. I'm excited to watch the rest of the series

This is over a 96 year period. With a normal yield curve, this makes sense. Today there is an inverted yield curve with higher short term rates than long term rates or intermediate rates. At some point it will make sense to switch to interim terms but am happy now with +5% short term rates for bond returns.

I actually invest partially for fun. If you have overplanned for retirement you can have some fun.

It's interesting how different investors can be. I don't invest one penny for fun. It has been 50 years since I invested for fun. Of course when you have more than you need you have a lot of choices, including a lot more equities than you need in your portfolio. I do believe one of the biggest luxuries a retiree can have is to have oversaved. It certainly lowers my blood pressure. Of course that might come from the handfull of pills I take daily!

Because of the pension and lack of debt I have a high tolerance for the ups and downs of the market, though I am more of a value than a growth investor except for up to 20% of my equities for spice or subjects that interest me. Didn't think twice about the 2022 drop, the flash crash, had to think a bit about the 2008-2011 recession because of a large special purpose charitable contribution in the middle of it. Lately I have been playing with your factor investing with index ETF's, not so much for me, but but to recommend as a framework for grandchildren's roths which I strongly recommended they start with their income from part time TA and RA jobs at college. It gives them a sample of all the ETF's they might need in the future, with simple rebalancing or adjustments to target percentages every 10 years or so as some factors regress to the mean. The plan is to donate the residue of my estate to a a family charitable fund after the education is paid for and have my children and grand children make grant recommendations as they see fit.

I lost over $70k when everything started to tank. Not because I was in an exchange that went belly up. I was just stupid to hold and because that's what everyone said. I'm still responsible. It just taught me to be a better investor now that I understand more of what could go wrong. It took me over two years of being in the market, I'm really grateful I found one source to recover my money, at least $10k profits weekly. Thanks Gloria Robinson

I don't understand how intermediate term bonds have a better return than long term term bonds
@whatsup32709 ай бұрын
I think it is that no one buys or issues high risk (B & C) bonds with 20 and 30 year maturities. Technically they exist but in a practical sense they make up only a tiny insignificant part of the market. Thus the returns he lists are mostly government (AAA & AA) bonds. So simply it is the blend of risks in the bond fund.

Inflation destroys the value of long term government bonds.
@whatsup32709 ай бұрын
@@george6977 Inflation can. That is the bond problem it needs stable money supply ( inflations/deflation). And thus in a practical sense the 10 year bond is the long bond. 10 year bonds make up a huge percentage of all bonds, and the 2 years or less is another huge percentage of bonds. fyi - 10 year bonds are linked to mortgage rates, and that helps stabilize the 10 year bond.

@@whatsup3270Isn't that what TIPS are good for? To counteract inflation?
@PaulMerrimanSoundInvesting9 ай бұрын
If you look at all three periods you will note the long term bonds had a higher compound rate of return but over the average 40 year period intermediate bonds give a better return. That suggests that long term bonds had some very good periods but also more lower return periods. We have chosen the intermediates in our portfolios as the bonds are there to reduce volatility. In 2022 the shorter maturity bond exposure held the loss to under 10%, compared to over 20% loss for long term bonds.
