The M70 PRO X has such an extreme treble boost that it ends up sounding like a handheld dynamic, so you have to get very close for any semblance of balance, and then it still sounds very V-shaped. Eh... not a fan. The M90 PRO X seems like a worthy contender in its class.

The M90 actually surprised me! Low end is there but tight and it has a clear and open top end but not as bright as the NT1-A for example.

The M70 sounds way too harsh and has really no low end. It also sounds muddy. As soon as I saw the frequency response, it all made sense. The boost from 1k to 4k is way too aggressive.
@Jisooee
@Jisooee 2 жыл бұрын
You're right. But that boost on mids has a purpose. Podcast microphones usually have that midrange signature that is best suited for Podcasting. For example, listen to the Rode Pod mic, listen to the Shure SM7B, & this M70. You can hear the midrange forward signature tone of those microphones. They're not really suited for singing, but extremely suited for Podcasting.

@@Jisooee Rode podcast sounds also very awful to my ears. Same characteristics. I can't stand these harsh nasily frequencies. That's why I like the Shure sm7b and it's my daily driver. Sounds warmer, not that harsh.

The sound is for me a bit like those typical "Stage" dynamic Mics, would like to compare them for example with Shure Beta 58, SM58, SM57, perhalps even something like Behringer BA 85A... Chris

REALLY appreciate hearing your mouth sounds in this video. I've spent a large part of my voice-over-adventures thinking, "maybe I just create too many mouth sounds and shouldn't choose this for a career!" But then in this video, I listened more carefully and realize you're voice isn't perfect, either! When I watch you at 1.5x or 1.75x, the mouth sounds disappear, but I watched this at 1x speed and I could hear them! Now I'll have to go through your earlier videos and see what you do to handle the problem... Thanks for all you share, by the way! To borrow the phrase from your outtro, every one of your videos is "something amazing"!

This comment kinda became a review of the DT 770 Pro 80 so if that's what you're after you're in luck. NOTE: these are the 770 pro, NOT the 700 pro X in the video. The pads on the DT770 Pro 80 are what I would describe as not extremely soft and quite firm. They require a bit of 'playing them in' before they're really comfortable. When they are though, they're vey comfortable. The firmness of the pad and articulation of the cups really help match the shape of your head. Resulting in a firm, contoured shape that clamps comfortably to your head with some softness to them. Impedance was an issue for me using a Steinberg UR22 MKII audio interface. I couldn't get the volume high enough to where I wanted it and the bass felt quite underwhelming compared to the HyperX Cloud II I was using before. The same was true plugging into the back of my MB (Asus B450 ROG Strix F-Gaming). NOW, I'm not sure the bass issue was due to the impedance or the fact the the ear pads hadn't been played in or shaped to my head yet since these headphones have noticeably better bass than the Cloud 2:s. I say better in that there's more clarity in the way you can make out what you're listening to in the lower register and the punch is much tighter while the Clouds offered a more visceral, airzooka-type bass experience with a lot more sounds blending together. To be clear, the interface I am using is notoriously quiet for headphones so I bought a whatever cheap headphone amp which solved any issue I had. For the record, an LD Systems HPA4 which has served me very well. I run the Steinberg cranked to max and the HPA4 at around 2 o'clock. I find the sound overall very good but a bit fatiguing depending on what I listen to. Especially sources with a lot of bass and low mids. There's one song I particularly want to listen to that makes me feel like I have a lot of pressure building up inside my ears which is quite uncomfortable. Other than those specific types of sources they sound incredible compared to the cheap/mid-range gaming or on-ear headphones I've tried before. I can make out a lot of sounds that I have not been able to before. Especially in the high mids and upper register. I did find that there was a bit of a learning curve trying to pick out the differences but after a week or two you'll be very happy if you came from something like "a good pair of gaming headphones" The Clarity and sound separation has actually helped me notice enemies footsteps a lot better in games. Something I had really doubted before. Even though they are closed back, the pads themselves don't isolate as much sounds as I would have liked. Sound leakage isn't a big problem but if there are sounds around you you will still hear them quite well. Having a conversation at a normal to low volume is not an issue when you're wearing them and not listening to anything. I have ordered the EDT 770 S Ear Pads that are made for the sound isolation model of the 770:s to see if that changes the isolation/sound profile to my liking. My main complaint is that the cable isn't removable. The way the cable bends where it comes out of the left cup isn't the most confidence-inspiring thing I've seen but I'm very careful with my things and don't intend on lending them out to anyone so I don't see it being a problem. Being able to plug in a 1.5m cable instead of the 3m one would make travelling with them possible but all things considered I wouldn't recommend using them as your on-the-go headphones even if there's nothing really that's stopping you. They just won't be very convenient. Yes I know this isn't the right place for something like this but I'm guessing at least one person will find this useful for comparison purposes.

Thanks so much Mike. I JUST bought the Beyerdynamic DT770 pros and I'm diggin' the new DT 700. I see that they listened to the customers about a detachable cable. Many people complained about that. Between the mics, I love the sound and performance of the m90. The m70 doesn't sound so good though. I fully agree with you about them "phoning in" the pop filter. Thanks for the introduction to these new products from Beyerdynamic. The one that stands out the most for me is the m90 mic. I feel that we will see that one a lot more often in the competitive mic market.

14:00 I think cheap is what they're going for here, not eco-friendly. Eventually the cardboard will get thrown away and replaced with a proper case. That cheapo pop filter will probably get discarded as well. The AKG P420 that I bought was properly eco-friendly. They skipped the cardboard box and you just get the case.

Definitely interesting products from beyerdynamic. The microphones both sound great, and aren't too expensive even though I've heard a similar quality level of sound for less. The M90 is just an amazing condenser, very open, airy and detailed and I really loved the sound. The M70 caught me off guard because of the sudden sound change, but after I got used to it I started to love it too, very dark but detailed, doing essentially what a quality dynamic is supposed to do but with a unique touch. The headphones also seem great, wish I could hear them. The marketing for them is interesting, they're supposedly meant to be either studio or on-the-go headphones, which explains only having a 48 ohm option, yet are built just as rugged as their other studio headphones. I trust that the build quality is just as good, I love my DT 990 Pros, but I personally wouldn't want to use them "on-the-go", rather I'd like to have a case for them that way they'd be the headphones I take to other studio, or just other locations where I'd be doing professional work. There's also a lot of quality of life changes that I love, the detachable cable is something I've been craving for my DT 990s lately, and the head cushion and ear pads seem significantly easier to remove and change out, having to heat up my pads to make the leather more malleable then try to finesse them around the headphone was torture when I switched out mine about a year ago. They also look a lot nicer and possibly made with higher quality plastics from the look of it? Overall the quality of life changes do merit a higher price, but for twice the price of the 770s and 990s it's hard to justify without hearing them first. Overall some cool products that I really hope to get the chance to use myself in the future.

Great review. I think there is definitely some cost savings on the "we can ship the same pop filter with both mics" I don't actually like a pop filter built into the shock mount, my Rode has one and I seldom use it. Not because it does not work, it's actually a good filter set the proper distance away from the mic, but as I record on camera it is hard for me to position the pop filter in a way that does not block my view and face so I ended up using a flex arm style filter like the one shipped with those mics before I found a close fitting curved metal filter that works well enough without blocking me. If Beyerdynamic were to upgrade the filter I'd prefer one fitted to the mic as you were showing. Love the detachable cables on the new headphones, my one complaint on my 770's.

I listened to this video on my phone. I know that's not the ideal way to listen to a microphone comparison but I could clearly hear the difference between the two. I preferred the M70 because the less pronounced bass resulted in a clearer vocal. Perhaps that was the intention - a microphone that works well in a variety of recording environments and on a range of listening devices. BTW I believe all these products are made in Germany, which may explain/justify the rrp.

The Ohm rating is related to how much power is needed to drive sound through the drivers. Higher resistance (ohms), more power needed. There is a slight difference in sound and signal to noise ratio, I believe due to using an amplifier for the headphones, but there are other people who may do a better job of explaining. Basically, it's a preference thing.

Man I think you shouldn't use 'Paid Promotion' category for your videos like this one where the brand sent you something to review, it can affect your revenue stream because the ad selection may get affected, and generally 'Paid promotion' videos are where there is a monetary exchange, the standard procedure for most reviewers is to get the product, and review it objectively. You're also upfront about the product being sent to you so I think it'll be completely fine to not tick the 'paid promotion' option. Just sharing my opinion as a fan of your work.
