Dying boots is always a fun process. I dyed a pair of ARIAT boots black. They were sold out of the black ones I wanted so I bought the brown ones and dyed them myself and they turned out great. As long as you do the process correctly it is really hard to mess it up. Great job! They look great!

For a DIY is a great great work, just to add for a better results, people can use acetone after the saddle soap and drying process; acetone will help to clean in deep the pores to receive the new dye. Then renovateur and finally some natural cream

That was very interesting, I have a pair of Thursday Captain’s that I over darkened with Obenauf’s water proofing and conditioner. I think I will dye them black as I like the way yours came out. I do have black t-core horse butt Wesco Hendrix boots which I think look great.

i did this a couple of days ago i used acetone to basically clean and take out previous dye and oils and used water based fibings dye practically used the whole bottle to do both boots used a hair dryer to dry between dyes after all of that i used some fibings aussie conditioner to seal the dye took me about 3-4 hours to do everything

Turned out great! Definitely seems to have been well worth the work - not only unique Iron Rangers now, but they look good too (that doesn't always happen after dye jobs).

@JonnyRaz234, I just bought a pair of the IR Hawthorne Muleskinners, which were ordered in my proper Brannock size; however, the Salesperson ordered the Amber in a 1/2 size larger so, they definitely looked like clown shoes. I guess I could've asked that the Amber IRs to be reordered in a 6.5. I'm wondering, did you not like the muleskinners? Should I return them and go with the classics in Full Grain Leather instead of the Roughout?

Ahhh I see you mention that with your 1 coat application. I had my heart set on the Blacksmith 3345 in the Black Prarie leather but they had sold out. So I picked up some Wolverine 1000 mile in Horween Arabica Lux and the core is extremely light. Could be some interesting patina on those eventually.

If the brown shoes through (tea core) then a brown sole goes pretty well. Has a nice dark roast coffee aesthetic.

If you're so concerned about getting your boots wet while washing them, do you also refrain from using them in rain? I think your washing methods are a bit irrational. Rinse them under the faucet, lather and scrub them with soap and a brush, rinse all the soap off under the faucet, and dry them with a towel; same way you'd wash yourself. The leather can take it, and it makes sure all the soap is off, which is important. Water is what does most of the washing, and I bet the soap turning brown was because of the dye in the leather.

After washing leather is open to absorb all possible water, while in rain all conditioners help to protect it at least partially, even when soaked through, so I don't think this comparison is 100% fair.
