Easy Hall Effect Transistor Ignition using a 3144 hall sensor and 2N2907 TIP42C Transistors

Here is a little electronic ignition that I made for a rotovator that has a dud magneto. it is based on the wiring diagram for the TIM 4 (I said TIM6 in the video in error) Which is a 12v adaptation of this jerry howell ignition: www.model-engin.... I have not soldered a circuit board before so I found it a good task to learn on. it uses a TIP 42C transistor, a 2N 2907 transistor and a 3144 Hall effect sensor. All of these parts are available on Amazon, see links below. I used a standard 12v lucas ignition coil and a standard Lucas 12 v battery. This system will replace the points condenser ignition system in the Lucas SR1 Magneto that this engine had originally. Watch out however. I found that this one gets hot so it needs a bit heat sink. Also in service you have to isolate it from the trigger. Otherwise the spark can travel across the hall sensor and damage it.

This is really interesting. You should use this on a small engine. They usually have coil on it but you can advance the ignition timing and burn alcohol. It could be very efficient especially if you make it spark twice instead of once when the magnet passes it

I have tried in vain to actually get this to work on an engine. It is easier to get a coil and a 12v battery and use the points and timing in the magneto to revamp the ignition. I have shown how to do this in another video

With this design, when the magnet is in the position to light the LED the current is flowing through the coil as is expected. A problem could occur if the engine just so happens to be sitting in this position for a long period of time then the large transistor would overheat. Point being, don't leave the key on for a long period of time without starting the engine.

It was a problem with older points ignition systems as well, since this is more suitable for a bike the ignition likely isn't left on when the motor is not running.

Old school can ignition coils typically have the + always connected to the battery (through a fuse of course) and the negative side is switched.

Easiest circuit and tutorial available on KZbin... I must say ❤ I have a query that hall sensor usually works on 5 volt, here it is connected to 12 volt..is it okay? Will it affect the sensor! And one more thing, you have used 20 ohm 5 w (ceremic) resistor. Is it compulsory to use ceremic resistor? Can we use non-ceremic resistor (20 ohm 5 w) of same value if I am unable to find ceremic one. Please help 🙏.

Remember spark duration is the most important and not all engines have the same duration and this is why the very original model stopped being produced by Atom back in the day. You need to know your engines spark duration and your spark timing needs to be perfect. I bit to les or a bit to much you will have lost in power and extrem wear and tear.

I guess. I would use a much larger heat sink and make sure that the hall sensor is well isolated from any spark circuitry. I have had the spark run through the legs of the hall sensor and damage it.

Does the coil get hot with the system on and not cycling? A timer that shuts down the saturation of the coil while not pulsing would be optimal.

I think there are lots of ways to make this circuit better! I have not used this system other than this build and test. I found that that the transistor gets too hot!

@@bootsowen Typically the transistor will get smoking hot, even on industry HALL ignition modules! This is perfectly ok when the engine is running as the saturation time is greatly reduced with the small dwell. When you run the magnet past as you are doing the TIP42C will get very hot.

Spark duration is the most important part to an ignition system. Your engine on its design and tune like air fuel ration will depict the spark duration and not all engines are equal. The original Atom company that was selling these stopped for this reason. You can make sparks all you want but if that spark isn't the proper duration then it's going to run the engine with a loss in performance and there will be extreme wear and tear.

is that resistor connected to the small 2N2907 low power transistor need to be 5 watts? because if i build that in actual and that big size 5 watts resistor is used and i will enclosed the finished product inside the distributor housing then its very tight in there. You can change the timing by adjusting the magnet on the flywheel.

If you need an advance then you could have a lever to move the sensor/ board relative to the flywheel

I am pretty sure the advance is needed. Probably need some other physical feedback, like vacuum or tps (throttle position sensor), mas (mass airflow sensor). Im not sure if a timing advance could be done electronically, maybe having some IC chip adjust by timing. Reason I ask is many of us older motorcycle owners have to buy expensive igniter boxes from after market because they no longer make them. Your simple circuit solves this except timing advance. I am going through this situation now. My 1996 Yamaha xv1100 Virago igniter (TCI - transistor controlled ignition) has failed.

Hi there, if it is possible try to insulate the magnet from the circuit, otherwise, if you mount the magnet directly to the metal flywheel the spark will try to jump the gap between the hall sensor and the metal and burn it out. Good luck!!

Thats very interesting, would you expect this system to survive the temperatures/rigors of a motorcycle magneto, I have a few old trail bikes with dilapidated points ignition that I would like to try this on.

It has been a few years when I made a few videos about these little systems. In theory they will work, but a few points. I would use a bigger heatsink. The other issue I had, that blew up a few of these boards was arcing across the 3144 to the chassis. I positioned the board near the flywheel, stuck a magnet on the flywheel but the path of least resistance was through the 3144 and not the plug so it arced. Maybe pot it in waterproofer too. It's worth a go. Let me know how you get on and have a look at my other videos. Depending on the bike, it may be easier to adapt a strimmer/minibike flywheel ignition.

@@bootsowen Thanks for the pointers, I was thinking of having the hall sensor mounted near the flywheel and the rest of the unit under the seat in a container plus heat sink. While pondering this I was wondering whether you could simply use a hall sensor to replace the points? e.g.Take a ferromagnetic strip and wrap it around a flywheel but leave a gap so that the hall is closed and then opens at the gap as if it is a set of points opening ? Or am I embarrassing myself now😬

@@mirage1500 I think that would work, as long as the strip will stay stuck to the flywheel. You don't need to have the strip the whole way around, just enough to trigger the sensor. Or you can just use the points if they are ok, I think I made a video about this in my ignition systems playlist, or the rotovators playlist.

This looks very promising but I have to drop the input voltage to 6 volts (LiFe battery) .. and have found a mini coil with 6volt input and produces 20k volt spark. HI.. This is exactly what ive been looking for ,to power a exhaust flamer kit.The only thing is ive no moving parts for the hall sensor to pick up on. I was going to use a square wave generator to power my coil (which runs my spark plug situated in tail pipe and burns unburnt fuel from the de-cat exhaust system).The square wave signal generated needs to be amplified or boosted so it will be strong enough to triger the 12v coil..do u have any knowledge in this..thanks marto

the parts are cheap, but you have to buy 10 resistors etc, so you end up with bits you dont need. I'd say about 25£ for all the parts including duplicates, or about £8 if you could get single bits at a cheap price,

1. There should really be a back EMF suppression diod in reverse polarity over the coil output or the coil back EMF will hammerer the transistor with high voltages spikes that will eventually destroy it. 2. There are no good reasons to use NPN transistors and no good reason at all, in this case, to connect the load to the emitter but instead, as normal, should be connected to the collector for better power.

Hi mate. I have built this circuit from your video plans. I said I would let you know how I got on with it. Well before I connected it to the ignition coil I tested it with a magnet by passing it by the Hall Sensor and the LED flashed as it was supposed to do, "BUT" when I connected the coil and tried for a spark on the spark plug the TIP 42C just fried, even though it was connected to a large heatsink with a fan on it. I am using a small coil from my Chinese 2 stroke CDI generator. Just using the coil, no other parts of the CDI system. Any suggestion would be appreciated. Thank you.

I am not really sure what to tell you, do you mean that it fried but it worked for a while and then and overheated? or did it just pop from a crossed wire, I have done the latter. I show it working in the video, but that was almost 4 years ago, so I am not sure that I will be able to answer any more questions. I think I made two different designs, (they were other peoples designs) and put up a video of each, it should be under transistorised ignition or hall effect or similar. I have been told that the web links that I provided to the original designs no longer worked.

The TIP 42 overheated as soon as I attached the coil so it may even be a bad coil or even the wrong coil. Its obviously something that I have done wrong somewhere and I just need to keep trying untill I get it to work like yours. I just wordered if you had any problems when you first built it. I am not that hot on electronics so I am not sure, it could be something to do with the type of rectification that the power goes through in your power supply. From a battery the dc will be smooth 12v, but from a power supply it might be stepped or smoothed but not perfect dc. Also, it is worth mentioning that while i did get this board to run in the video i did not get it to run successfully on an engine. But that was due to arcing across the hall sensor!

Hi there. It sounds like there is a short circuit somewhere. But without having it in front of me I can’t diagnose it. Or the 3144 is stuck open. (Broken).

I built this circuit foR use on a motoRbike, it didn't work, just burnt out the power lead from the battery. I must have checked the circuit a dozen times, still no luck, just burns out the power lead from the battery. Interestingly, when I connect everything up and just scratch the power lead the spark plug fires. Didn't work for me, I'll search for another diagram.

Are you using a large enough gauge of wire for the power lead?

@@toglhot Breadboard jumpers are definitely too thin, you will need a bigger heatsink on the transistor too, the one in the video is too small. There is lots o useful information in the other comments.

Hi there, In short I don't know, but if i had a 6v battery i would just try it with this circuit. I don't think it would damage the circuit if you use a lower voltage, but you might need to use a sparking coil appropriate for 6v.

Hi, I have been looking for a video like this for ages. I want to use this to power a 2 stroke engine from an old generator. The magneto in the engine is broken and I think this would be a good alternative. Just need to set the magnet and hall sensor to engage at the top dead center of the piston. Do you think it would handle a 2 stroke 50cc engine? Thanks for this video.

I really don't know, I made it for a 500cc engine, but in the end got the points ignition going again. I found that if you positioned the board too close to the metal body of the machine it would arc and fry the board, but that might have been with another design of board. I tried a few, i have posted videos of them, search through my videos. good luck, let me know how you get on and post a video if you get it going.

@@bootsowen: Thank you for that information. I will certainly let you know how it goes. You see, the problem I have with this 2 stroke engine is the flywheel. Its one of them Chinese generator engines but the flywheel key, which is built into the flywheel broke off. I got another flywheel but it has no magnets on it for the pickup coil. I was actually going to try install magnets on this new flywheel by grinding out the area where the magnets should be and inserting some neo magnets and trying that. The other problem is that I tried to remove the magnets from the old flywheel and busted it, so I don't know if I have to set the magnets North and South or if its just one pole that is needed to activate the little pickup coil. It's a CDI system. Again thank you for helping and I have just subscribed. :D

I think there should just be one trigger magnet for the CDI pickup. Good luck with the project

Thanks for your reply.I have made a tim-6 circuit board but the coil won't give off a spark. If I remove the coil and replace it with a bulb it will light up and go off..but nothing from the coil. Any input would help.

I used the circuit from the circuit diagram, it was a long time ago so I don't remember the details, but I used a 12v coil and a 12v battery, If your coil is not for 6v then maybe that is the issue. also, are you earthing the plug, it will not spark unless it is earthed back to the circuit.

Yes it is. I read that if the battery only produces low amps the secondary resistance won't work. It's rated at 4 amps just om the limit. Is that possible. Thanks very much for all your help.

I think it relates to the length of time (dwell) that allows the spark charge to generate, but it depends on the type of ignition.

Cool. Use a very big heatsink on the transistor and make sure the spark can’t arc across the 3144. I fried one that way.

Hey, great vid! I understand slightly how this works but I can't really understand what purpose the 2N2907 has got? Could you explain to a beginner :) I have one Allegro a1302 Hall sensor but was planing on using it with a transistor (TIP41c) and was thinking the signal couldn't trigger that etc. Anyways, if you got a chance, let me know what it does :D

I don't know much about electronics, but to my simple mind it steps up the signal from the hall sensor to the transistor that is capable of actuating the coil. Like you say, using your parts the hall sensor may not be "strong" enough to trigger the TIP transistor. Good luck.

I would like to know if it possible to multiply your circuitry by 8 and fit it to an 8 cylinder engine as a coil on plug configuration. It would involve the fitting of base plate in the distributor housing , using one magnet on the rotor and 8 times a 3144 Hall sensor.
