I've taken the below from the manual which I've found online. (a) lock the door by turning the handle (C - Fig. 1) clockwise; (b) depress the programme selector knob (D - Fig. 1) and turn it clockwise to the number corresponding to the washing cycle required. (c) pull out the programme selector knob. At this point the indicator light comes on, the machine starts and carries out automatically all operations relevant to the selected programme. You seem to be missing out step a, turning the handle which is almost in the centre of the panel, to the left of the programme selector.
