A red flag for me is when everyone is talking about a boot at the same time. You see it all the time on KZbin, if everyone is talking about an item within a month or two, it is likely they are part of that companies new product push. I'd rather look into reviews of boots that have been on the market for years, the true classics.

I went to RedWing and got sized and was blown away. I normally wear a 13 in sneakers and boots. When Jason sized me up, it ended up being an 11 wide in the Iron Ranger. I thought he was bullshitting until he came out with the boot and they fit perfectly.

When I first started working in the automotive industry I went in with a pair of Dickies. I worked in a department with caustic oil and coolant on the floor. Within 2 weeks I was in trouble. The soles were swelling and beginning to liquefy, the strings were snapping. I broke down and followed the advice of the old timers. I bought a pair of Red Wings. I not only wore them at work, but during fishing and hunting. I bought them in 1985. I left the plant in 2006 (Buy Out). Those boots are still in my garage with the original strings. 😆

Too many of the same boot. I am really, really guilty of this. Once I like something I keep buying it. I am now in my "trickers 4497s last" phase. I buy too many of the same boot, but also lose interest in the boots I bought before. For example, I am no longer in my Redwing moc toe phase. But I still have 3 pairs. I use them as dog walking boots. But that is a lot of money for dog walking boots. Still. My feet are comfy and dry. And they last a long time. There are worse ways to spend your money.

Just bought a pair of the Pittsburgh they were so stiff. The outer sole has no give at all. It was like walking on a piece of plastic. And even their flex version is going to be stiff. Id spend the money on a decent pair of Redwings or Whites/Bakers/Nicks. And for comfort a pair of Merrell Moabs with a custom insole. They are JUICY and THICC, in a soft way lol...

What about when you are so green and wet behind the ear a newb about it that you still think that Ecco, Doc. Martens Timberland are great. Until you find out, by drilling deeper into the subject, when one of your older Ecco's soles disintegrates, that they really ain't 'all that', at all; not, whatsoever. Like me up to about 3 weeks ago, ha! So I'd like to propose another newbie mistake. One you guys are probably too gentlemanly to suggest and probably just avoid talking about: 'When you think that shit boots are good'. There's actually a very similar newbie mistake in hifi world. It's called: 'You still think Bose stuff is good and you haven't learned, yet, that 'Bose' actually stands for 'Buy Other Sound Equipment'.

This hurts, literally me yesterday lol... Buy a pair of Thorogood 1957s and twice in a row they have broken midsoles. Thankfully it was a learning lesson that I will never make again.. If you are going to spend $300 on a pair of boots. Save up and spend $500+ and get something made in america, that is custom to your foot and actually made with a leather midsole unlike Thorogoods.
@LouisWinthorpe622

@@HeritageCast That sounds like good advice for a lot of things. Be prepared to part with your maximum budget and do a bit of homework beforehand. As with so many things, you get what you pay for. I'm a bit pissed at myself that I only just discovered the world of high quality boots that could last half a lifetime at the age of 53. I'm Scottish. There are some UK shoe makers that are pretty good but America is definitely has the best lasting traditions of leather working, tanning, quality, manufacturing in the world from all I've seen and read. I've ordered handmade ones from a UK made-to-order manufacturer called Jadd, but only because they are made of Horween Chromexcel.

I'm 62. What used to be comfortable when I was young, does not feel so great when I am old. Lots of working on my feet all my life. Three back surgeries and fallen arches. These days, I wear 6" moc toes, Thorogood. My back and feet demand no arches and soft outsoles. I have a pair of these that is on their 3rd resole. That is a good value. For non-work casual? I have a pair of Allen Edmonds Cap Toe boots. They have been resoled once and look very good. I once wore cowboy boots but no more. My poor feet cannot do it and boots in this category these days are not very good for what you pay. Understand that what you like is what you like. What you can afford may be another issue. I am going to order some Thursday Captains when the Allen Edmonds wear out. Price will dictate that buy.

I don’t know that a boot with a clear plastic sole and kilties makes the best example of a ‘work’ boot. Just because it has leather laces doesn’t make it so. And though I don’t own any, I wouldn’t call an easy on/off basic brown chucka a ‘complicated’ boot. Solid classic designs may rise and fall with trendiness but they never go out of style. Stick with that nugget of wisdom and you can’t go wrong.

I wear multiple pairs of boots throughout the year based on my work environment. I have Carolinas, Red Wing, Vasque, Danners and Merrill. The advantage of this is being comfortable depending on the task at hand. If I'm working in a customers home doing my usual finish carpentry work, I'm often wearing a lightweight hiking boot. Outside work, digging in the dirt, walking on uneven ground, I'll wear one of the taller construction boots which give more support, protection and traction. The obvious advantage of owning multiple pairs is that my boots last many years this way. I know guys who will buy one pair of good work boots (250-300 range) and they're destroyed in a year. Theses are usually the Craig Von Leathercrack types imo! Great video.

I have a brown mock toe pair, a brown captain style pair, and a black Chelsea boot with what seems like a really thick heel that makes me a good inch and a half taller. I love it 😂 and finally a brown dressier chukka style boot. None of these are expensive boots. I don't work a hard job. I just work in a mental hospital. The captain style boots are from luton boots co. They're real leather (albeit maybe a bit thin) and have a Goodyear welt. So they exceed my demand. They also ran me $7.99 so I can't beat it. They do mark the floor REALLY bad though. The Chelsea boot is from express, and I still only paid like 12.99 for them. I'm sure they're also real leather. The other two are from nautica and Frye and co.? And are not real leather but still look pretty nice. I don't think I paid over $30 for any of them. Pretty sure I've got under $100 in all 4 pairs.

Well, at least I've only make half of these mistakes...went from Worx to Redwing, then Danner, then Thursday and have a set of Nick's on order. Let me just help everyone out... this is ridiculous information... make it simple, find a boot in the $250 to $350... oil it once every season, done, the boot will last a long time. I watched this video thinking there would be good information... but I felt like I was listening to a guy who wore boots to head out to the club, not to be used as a boot. Brands are a matter of taste and honestly, some brands feel better to other people than others. I wanted Thorogood boots to feel great, they don't for me, but I know guys that love them.. I have almost flat feet, that maybe the problem with them. I have worn Red Wings since I was old enough to walk, my Grandpa took me to get my first pair back when they were all still made in American... now you have to look! But if you are looking for a boot that won't fall apart, you really have to buy American or German made boots... it is the quality of the leather that counts. Boots made in China, even though sometimes really $$$$$ are for show, the leather is usually crap leather.

I personally find black boots more versatile. Black boots, along with black belts, gloves, hats, and coats, go with everything and always match each other. Ties together and gives a simple, clean, classic look to any outfit. I have one pair of 6" Thorogood moc-toes in brown that I wear only with blue jeans. Kinda the opposite of versatile. I wear jeans a lot, though, so they make sense for me. Otherwise, I strongly suggest a good black boot, like an Iron Ranger in black harness leather. It's a boots boot. Your boot buddies will be impressed. You'll love them. They look awesome and hold up well. It's only money...

Treat my boots like a good truck. As a GC we put our boots to work, but also maintain and respect them so they are there when we need them. I dont have a set time, but based on the conditions of a work site and general use, I clean them off, brush the stitching, and use various types of conditioner depending on the boot. If I were to guess I would say most boots get a light surface clean every 5 or 6 weeks, and a heavier clean and condition every few months.

Im a believer that theres different brands and models of shoes for different people. Ive ran into the same situation with motorcycle helmets.. Like i fit a thorogood well but not a redwing heritage anything (i was very sad to find this out when i finally go to a redwing to buy the classic mocks). Also i Dont think the brannock is always right, some of us just have weird feet maybe😅 I think the middle scale is obviously right but when it comes to the ball and width i think the brannock can "go astray". For example i might have a moderately skinny foot but my big toe fans out a bit more then some peoples. So the brannock thinks i need a skinnier shoe based on the ball but infact that makes them scrunch my toes. Now after many years in my life I've came to realize there is no "perfect fit" we can just try many different brands and types of shoes till we get the best fit we can. Boot noob......not really looking for everyday work boot that lasts for at least 5 yrs ideally 10yrs. Needs to be 12hrs + standing, moving, climbing, muddy, snow, uneven terrain, to pavement/concrete. Basically all terrain, all weather, and long hours. Suggestions?

Have ysed redwings for years and finally bit the bullet and got some nicks. Theyre so beefy and durable not super comfy yet ( 30~hours broken in).

No amount of correct measurement makes up for the fact that 90% of all boots out there, INCLUDING redwing, have too narrow toe-boxes. I got measured at an official redwing store and the boots STILL fits poorly, because my feet are shaped by years of being barefoot

I went to every shoe shop in my town and none of them had a Brannock device. I ended up with one of those digital scans at Athlete’s Foot. Was informative, but no idea how standardised their results are.

That’s really odd. I usually see one lying around. Maybe there’s a regional reason. I’ve been fitted a few times. They are helpful in accurate length and somewhat useful for width. They don’t measure toe splay or height which are important for some styles. They are also helpful to identify if you have differences between the left and right foot which is useful to know.

@@Dj-ve2hx Brannkock device is a thing of the past, cash is a thing of the past, gender is a thing of the past and… you are a thing of the past, presumably :D I did find a Brannock device in the one shop I hadn’t bothered to look in the first time. Mostly because it’s a hip outdoors shop with they thems at the counter, but hey I was wrong. Nobody but me seemed to know how to use it and they didn’t have my size in any good boots, but that’s life. I’m a thing of the past these days too!

I wear boots 12-15 hours a day on my feet at work. I've been doing it for years and know what I like. The only "outfit" is a service shirt and jeans. When I see one of you ladies wearing work boots without a single scuff on them I look down my nose at you.

Watching this after getting my second pair of Jack & Jones boots because that's all I can afford with my third world salary. Perhaps, I can skip upgrading my phone and get a pair of boots instead. Makes more sense than spending on something so temporary.

Doc martin's really disapointed as quality is so not what it was. Redwings used to be reasonably priced. Meindl make great boots for tac and hunting use. Danner are ok except for the cardboard heel counters.

I'm not a man, and I definitely do not need a boot for work, I just wear boots casually. However, I'm a leather worker, and I feel #7 on this list. lol. I don't over-condition, but I have to fight the urge to.

Mistake #1 wearing your boots to drill oil, wrangle cattle or build things. This will mess up your boots guys. Please don't do this. As an added negative effect, you'll ruin your nails too.

Eh... cedar shoe trees can be good for storage but make sure the boot is actually dry before putting them in. They will actually keep the moisture inside if it isnt dry due to lack of air ventilation from the shoe tree. I learned this lesson from my iron rangers.

A brannock device does not measure foot volume. A foot is not a two dimensional object. Like a box, it has three dimensions and the size of one's foot includes the height. Don't put all your trust in a Brannock device, especially if you are on the border line for shoe width.

bought a pair of dark suede boots for this winter a month ago. was so impressed by the quality and comfort that started to watch videos how to properly clean/take care of boots. got so deep into the world of boots that bought 4 more pairs (each a different style but nothing ostentatious). bye bye sneakers and all other cheap crap. thanks for the great content!

I love how I see this comment you made a year ago, which is the same time I got addicted to boots and literally don’t wear my Jordans and sneakers anymore. I went on this obsession to learn how to properly care and take care of the boots, as if they were my own child and now I have nine pairs of year later. Thank you for showing me there’s other lol

@@emeyer2323 in my case it turned out not just addiction to boots but I have revised my outlook on clothes, shoes in general. basically the new sense of quality makes me just ignore the current fashion trends and pay attention to something that has a nice silhouette, character, made of quality materials. it has a good effect on my mind and world outlook as I tend to ignore now more meaningless things and appreciate more the things that are actually beautiful. There is so much noise now coming from everywhere and most of it is garbage exactly as with shoes like sneakers that I could of bought for over 100 USD which is essentially a plastic, pseudo-leather, generic looking waste of money.

As a kid my parents got me a pair of Converse each summer, then a pair of hiking boots for each winter. As an adult I worked 50 hours a week in boots until I retired. The Redwing Iron Ranger is not a work boot, I owned a pair. If you do any kneeling, getting under cabinets, floor work, the Iron Ranger will develop a permanent bend to the sole, the top of the boot will then rub the top of your instep. The boots look groovy with Levi's 501s, white T-shirt, and black hoodie. Otherwise, junk.
