Hello! Thank You for Your videos about e-ink devices in general and PALMA in particular. I am a huge fan of those, so I bought one after slight consideration. In the video You mentioned that PALMA was being relaunched, since the first batch was totally sold. And they made some changes with that reissuing. Can You please specify what are those? Is there any difference between the devices from the first and second launches or it's just a firmware update? The point is that I suspect purchasing the first batch remains. Cause I see some feature, which are not performing as You or some other bloggers describe, namely: - the background is not that white (kinda too gray) - the image itself (in all the modes except HD) is grainy - probably the most important point - GPU is not performing like You mentioned. I see a slight flickering while scrolling and it does't not erase all the artifacts (ghosting) even in balanced mode. So I would really appreciate if You find time to comment on those: 1) do You notice things like that on Your device or is it just mine? 2) is that because my device is from the first release and they improved that in the second one? Appreciate Your response in advance

You should be able to have the Fold as your main Whatsapp device and then the Palma as one of your connected devices.

Thanks for the video, Kit. Interesting as always. What would you say is your experience now that a few months have passed? I bought a Boox Palma and I'm thinking of ways of ways to use it. I will combine it with a Jelly Start for connectivity. Kindle and other reading apps are an obvious one, but also as a way to read articles and news clippings (through, e.g., Pocket). Any other ideas?

How is the battery life read only or only in standby?

In sleep mode the battery will last for around 5 days, but I would need to experiment to know for sure. Also depends on what's on the lock screen (like a clock) and whether you keep wifi on while sleeping (settable). The GPU is working all the time, so that is a drain on the battery. My guess is that when used just for reading it will last about 15 hours. But, it is so easy to get lost watching videos and running apps that will drain the battery faster.

Would you use it to watch videos on KZbin to do craft work or follow, say, cooking recipes or tutorials on how to fix things? Is it crisp enough for that? Really niche question, actually. But hey!

I would say that you could use it to get information from a video, but that you probably wont. Really we all just show videos to show what the screen can do when pushed!

Sometimes, one needs a cellphone for setting alarms, receiving notifications, checking calendar, reading emails, even just to use apps like Pomodoro timers, stopwatches, and so on. However, attempting these tasks with a cell phone can often lead to distractions, pulling you away to do something else and wasting valuable time. I believe this device is perfect for all these use cases, even for employing it as an 'assistant' with voice commands. When carrying out these tasks in a fixed location, be it at home, in a library, or in the kitchen, it might be advantageous not to have a SIM card, as it can serve as another source of distraction with incoming calls or text messages. Personally, I'd like to have it for all the purposes I mentioned earlier.

Those of us old enough to remember the old Palm Pilots, Psion organisers etc will remember life before wireless connectivity. Those were focused devices but not totally distraction free. I’m not convinced that a one size fits all device is the right way to go. Whilst some love their foldable phones I find them fiddly, bulky and a bit too delicate. Kindle and an iPhone works for me.

For me it is either my Note 10 and my Boox Air or the Tab S9 depending on what I am doing but in the home I wouldn't want another phone sized device when a normal book sized device would do. When out and about if I was traveling long enough to want to read anything then I would have a bag.

A small phone like a pixel4a / Asus ZenFone 9/10 and a surface duo 1 and a kindle paperwhite and small eink reader like the Hisense Hi Reader pro which is what onyx copied for their design of the boox Palma. The Hisense Hi Reader pro HHRP is much better ,it has 4G cellular connectivity and a GPS but no Google play out of the box , one can side load apps. It HAS a fingerprint button but NO camera ! But the Hisense A9 has BEST of the them but NO SD card slot. The highest spec of Hisense A9 is the Hisense A9 Pro ( 8GB ram and 256 GB storage ) !!! And has higher spec cameras. !!!!

I don’t use the WiFi on my Boox unless I’m downloading in which case I’m expecting the battery to go down. Otherwise the battery lasts ages.

I am sure you must have looked at Hisense devices? They make e-ink phone/e-readers in this size. They have dual SIM phones, with SD card slot, fingerprint read etc, 300 ppi e-ink displays are 6.1inch. A little more $$ than this but they look interesting.

No there is NO writing eink small device . Just the Palma eink reading device. Use a small note pad and pen ... cheaper

No there is no notes app natively on the Palma. There could be though, I see no reason why you couldn't access the cloud notes on the Palma! I can't see a way to install the app though!

It doesn't respond to a stylus, but you can install a note app and use on-screen keyboard input or voice-to-text input.

you calould always instakk google keyboard app and obsidian, evernot or google keep and take your notes that way, that's my plan at least i dont trust myself with a e-ink note taking device as my handwriting isnt great but being able to say, speak into the mic and have it convert the speech to text or just type like a smartphone could be handy.

There is no way I can install external dictionary on this device. Dictionary app does not recognize files transferred to the dicts folder. On my Boox Note it works fine and installed dictionaries are seen in the app.

Hello @KitBetts-Masters can i ask you a question about this device? Is it so that it actually uses two e-ink layers, one for greyscale and one for color? Would you be able to tell if it would be possible to put android on it in greyscale output and that way it only uses the greyscale layer (if at all i am right about this!) and leave the color layer unused, thereby saving on battery life substantially? My personal opinion color is a wrong way to go for e-ink devices (makes no sense for me) its just a way to get the interest of the wrong usergroup and I think they know, but want to cash in or something in that fashion. Anyways anyone here know about a company, productline wich goes the route of greyscale e-ink for pocket devices like this? Thx

I respectfully disagree. I'm 56 yrs old, so not some youngster, but I'm still an avid comics reader. Being able to read color comics, especially at night in bed, on my Kobo Libra Color has been a total game changer for me, and I love it. I'm definitely not the "wrong crowd" either... back in the day I bought, and actually still have, the original Kindle... for $359 OUCH 😲.

A9 / Hisense Hi Reader Pro is better than the Palma as both have 4G LTE cellular connectivity and GPS location , and fingerprint reader but the Palma DOES NOT !!! The only thing Palma has that Hisense A9 / HHRP doesn't is : MICRO SD card slot ( Upto 2TB card ) and Google play and Google services out of the box .

Thanks for taking my note onboard, the whole "pocketable" thing for me would be great if it could also replace my phone. I wouldn't use it all the time as a phone but lets say I went on the train somewhere and I wanted to travel light, I can either take a bag and put my tablet / ereader in it and my phone in my pocket, hotspotting to the phone or the hotspot device you showed OR I could just slip this in my pocket and take that one single device, I don't want a phone in one pocket and this in the other really. Your thoughts about the radio approval and licensing make perfect sense though!! I do wonder if this might be a precursor to a future product though with them kind of trialling the market to see if we are ready. It just seems such a wasted opportunity especially putting that fast refresh screen in it as well.
