Feather Butterfly Brooch Tutorial (related to 1st tutorial)
Materials and Tools Needed:
1) A pair of black goose feathers, approximately 15 cm in length, with a mirrored shape (if one turns to the left, the other should turn to the right, as illustrated in the video tutorial);
2) A pair of mallard feathers (or any feather with a white tip), mirrored shapes, approximately 12 cm in length.
3) A pair of American wood duck feathers (or similar) with mirrored shapes, approximately 8 cm in length.
4) A pair of lady Amherst pheasant feathers (or similar), mirrored shape, approximately 5 cm in length.
5) 4 cm of black chenille stem (also called pipe cleaner)
6) A pair of red size 11/0 beads
7) A brooch base with a lock, approximately 2 cm
8) A piece of black nylon fabric, approximately 5 x 5 cm (Tip: it can be from an old umbrella or the lining of an old bag). It is important to select a durable material because this fabric scrap will be the base of the brooch.
9) Transparent craft glue
10) Craft scissors (with a long tip)
11) Ruler
12) Sewing needle
13) Black sewing thread (preferably polyester)
14) Nylon cutting template (click here)
15) White pencil
16) Small pliers with a long tip
17) Important: The shedding of feathers in birds is a natural process, and they can be obtained from aviaries (sometimes even for free).
Instructions:
Wings: Download and print the pattern or base template (available in our website, link above). The printed image should measure approximately 4 cm in height.
On a flat surface, place the template on the nylon fabric. Outline the material with a white pencil and then cut it out. This small cut will serve as the base of the brooch, connecting the feathers and the pin.
Gather the pair of black feathers (item #1) and, using scissors with a fine tip, cut part of their upper shaft, as shown below and in our KZbin video on this tutorial. Do not throw anything away yet (see image below with the caption 'Save this!'). Keep the small feather section you just cut, as you will need it. Repeat this step with the pair of mallard feathers (item #2).
Make sure to cut both feathers of the same pair uniformly. Use a white pencil to mark where to cut, if necessary.
Now, trim all feathers to the point of the after-feathers. Remember! The pairs should have the same length. Our KZbin video shows in detail how to do this.
Next, we need to glue the smaller feathers onto the larger ones (watch the video). Let them dry for about ten minutes. Subsequently, glue them onto the nylon fabric base, as shown in our website:
Press the feather against the nylon base for a minute. Then, let them dry for up to ten minutes before continuing your project.
The next step is very important, so please do not skip this part.
Body: Take the black chenille stem (item #5) with approximately 4 cm in length and notice that the edges of the wire are quite sharp and possibly dangerous; we don't want anyone to get hurt! Also, after cutting the stem, it tends to unravel the black chenille material; it frays, so to prevent this, bend both ends with pliers, forming a small loop.
Eyes and Antennae: Take the remaining black feather (upper section) and remove two barbs from it (A); these will be the butterfly's pair of antennae. Then, dip the barb's tip in glue (B) and stick it into the bead (C), repeat this step once more. Let the pair of eyes/antennae dry and, later, glue them onto the butterfly's body (D). Allow them to dry.
Joining Wings and Body: Apply glue to the back surface of the body, as shown above in photo F. Then, apply more glue to the center of the wings and immediately join the parts, applying light pressure. Afterward, wait until the glue dries (at least an hour).
Brooch Base: After the glue has dried, thread the needle and sew the metal pin to the back of the nylon fabric base. When passing the thread to the other side, make sure to wrap it around the butterfly's body, as shown in the video; this will secure your work. As a finishing touch, after tying the thread, apply a bit of glue to the knot. Let it dry.
Final dimensions of the brooch: approximately 14 x 14 cm.
