I have a six month old border collie and he does NOT respond well at all to a harsh verbal correction. Kindness goes a long way with him and is what I´ve focused and it works so much better!

I spend all day with my BC. She is tireless. Snow, rain, sun. Doesn’t matter. Hike in mountains for hours. This dog is extremely smart and communicates effectively. Best dog ever.

I have two BCs, with both I have noticed many of the behaviors you described. I have to ask people not to reach their hands out to my dogs to sniff them, small children are also instructed to be gentle and quiet. These dogs are amazingly loyal and are great at telling nice people from not so nice people. I can trust my teenage daughter to walk the neighborhood with these dogs at her side and feel no worry. Border collies are truly the most exceptional animals and now that I have them I don't want to have any other breed!

I've got a rescue border collie (trained as a sheep dog for her first year and kept on a chain all day apart from training, then rescued by someone and kept as a family pet for 6 years on a croft with sheep & chicken, but they couldn't give her the exercise she needed - we got her 1 1/2 years ago). She's got the energy of 10 dogs and I've taught her to herd our chicken. She absolutely hates any other dogs though, and just about tolerates our second dog. Big progress when she went on the couch to sleep next to him last month, unheard of beforehand. She's also incredibly clever, I often don't need to speak a command, I just need to motion to her or look at her in a certain way and she knows what to do.

Spot on, I'm just about to start my search for .your fourth BC over the last 30+ years. Incredible animals, very loving and keen to please, the BC's I've had were a dream to train. This is my last BC, what a dog, she was put to sleep at 14, after a very short illness. Miss her so much.

Mine is a rescue and naturally became the self-appointed guardian of the house. I’m not a farmer & he didn’t have another choice… no one claimed him and I wasn’t gonna see him put down for no good reason. Sometimes ideal isn’t possible, but we make the best… and he is my best friend, adapted fine to being inside most of the time. Of course I walk him as much as I can, sometimes 4 or 5 times a day. They adapt TO YOU, as well… and you find a way to live together. Wouldn’t trade him for anything.

My collie is just coming on 14 months old and these videos are a real insight into how they behave. They're too smart to be undisciplined so these videos really help! Thank you

I have a Border Collie/Blue Heeler 50/50 split. We trained a lot of the herding out early on. She does well with other dogs but will avoid strangers until she meets them 4 or 5 times. Children is very nervous around. Great pup though.

Hi my husband and I have already got a 16 year old border collie cross springer and 2 cats. I have a friend who works in a vets and a 11 month border collie was brought in after an RTA, she had to have facial surgery and has a hairline fracture of her pelvis. She is able to walk with this injury and so it was decided not to operate. Obviously she was of no use to the farmer so the vet practice took her on and my friend thought that she may fit in with my calm dog. Our dog is totally indifferent and one of our cats can deal with her; however our younger cat is skittish and the collie seems to want to herd and intimidate her, can you offer advice on the cat issue and what restrictions mobility wise we will have to consider She’s on a trial with us for 2 weeks before we decide. Your advice would be invaluable. Thank you 😳🤓

Not enough jobs for every border. What job can we give them when herding isn’t an option?

I've had 3 border collies throughout my life thus far and I have found even without a rigorous job, as long as you give them a ton of attention/affection, that they become very well behaved and meet your expectations of such. That being said, when they aren't given a job, they tend to create their own. For example when I was a kid, my dad didn't allow my brother and I to run inside the house, and he would scold us whenever we did so. And so would our border collie. Our adult male border collie caught on to the fact that running wasn't allowed, and would actively stop us (by grabbing our shoes and dragging us back to where we started, definitely herding instinct but I digress). And he was praised for this by my dad, so he continued to do it lol (he only would do it if we had shoes as to not hurt us, otherwise he would just bark at us). He had a habit of "enforcing the house rules" in other regards as well. For instance, he had a great relationship with our cat but he wouldn't allow her to scratch the walls. Things like that. He basically saw himself as the enforcer for our dad, whom he looked up to. That being said, I have found that the biggest thing found that a young border collie needs is outdoor space. It seems once they have that, they seem to thrive. These dogs cannot be cooped up in a house, especially in their youth.

My dog used to know me so well that when she disobeyed and break the command "stay" I would turn around and gave her a look and she would go back in place to stay, they really do understand your facial expressions.

Instead of just throwing a ball - I had the idea of using proper sheep dog commands for her to retrieve. She can approach the ball by stealth (steady), stop on approach or return (lie down), cum by (approach right) away approach (left), cancel retrieve or drop ball (dat 'l' do) and other tasks. I was thinking it might take weeks or months - but it took one fun afternoon. Amazing dogs - so much fun and a great bonding time - now learning to use the whistle. Thank you for explaining to everyone the unique complexities of the breed.

i’ve done the same thing! my pup at a few months old crouched into position, we started training that day. she’s 10mos old, lives fetch, the herding the ball and has nade up her own game…holds a ball in her mouth and plays catch, battling it back with her paw or nose, she’s an amazing dog
