We got a border collie puppy two weeks ago and we were worried about our cat. In the past we brought a kitten home and he was so stressed out that we had to give it away. However, the cat accepted the border collie without any major issue, which I am increadibly happy about! :D

My border collie is very friendly and she knows how to present herself to another creature who's not hostile 8) She's usually calm with our cats but if they run she's eager to chase them. I try to drag her attention to me and play with her or or feed her for patience in such moments if I can.

Sounds very manageable. My 1 year old pup Skene likes my cat but a couple of days ago he was pushing a bit too hard to engage the cat in play. My cat basically ignores him which is ideal. It’s nice when they get along. 🙂

My cat grew up with my half-Border. I rescued another Border and in waiting for him to be cleared for me, my older dog died. Since they looked so much alike, the cat did not notice that it was not the same dog at first. When she did, she would SCREAM at the dog and run to her "safe place." It took about 2 months for her to accept the new dog. The dog would only look at her to cause her to scream. After the two months, it was just as chill as with the other dog.

I have had Border Collies and Aussies as pets and working dogs for 45 years and cats for 50 years. Never had to rehome either. You didn’t mention it but i feel that the human to human dynamics is extremely important in a successful pet family. You can bet a stressed , high drama human is going to create problems in a Border Collie/cat family. Another road to conflict is how healthy your pets are. A pet with a health issue can become defensive and difficult. Just some thoughts to share.

Blind cat doesn't care about the BC stare. Of course he didn't care back when she was 8 1/2 weeks old and he still had eyes. He knows dogs can be trained. The little cat otoh... just as well he has his kingdom upstairs where the dogs don't go. They're fine together but they like to provoke each other so we keep an eye on things.

We have 8 cats & there was definitely some stress in the house for the first few weeks. The downstairs is a cat only space, so they retreated there. My cat with feline leukemia got sick due to stress, but rapidly bounced back. I wouldn’t advice getting a collie if your cats are elderly, have health issues, etc. Luckily I’ll be moving out with my dog in a year or 2.

I kind of feel like when it comes to border collies and pets the border collies who have more of a herding instinct may do better with pets. I think the ones with a stronger herding instinct know how to control themselves with the other pets and know to not hurt them but watch over them and make sure they are doing what they should and are following order. My dog would keep our pets in line. She knew to be gentle to them but she also knew to be dominant over them to put them in their place. She would nip at them as a last resort but that was if they would fight each other or if they would try to get out of our yard or were being destructive. It’s never a bite just a nip beside them to guide them to redirect them and steer them away from their bad behavior. Of course early socialization and training helps as well but they are sheepdogs and I think some have a little more of that instinct in them than others and I just think that sheepdog instinct can actually be helpful when it comes to having other pets.

I had a border collie mix. Seriously the best dog alive. So many reasons that I’m not going to get into on this comment. Anyway, she got along so well with my cat. My cat wasn’t a kitten either when we got her, but she loved my dog. I think it was actually more that my cat loved my dog than my dog loved my cat. Not because she was cold, but I think she had that sheep dog instinct with her. My cat would show affection to my dog and my dog would let her. My cat would bite my dog but my dog knew to stay calm and not right or escalate the situation. My cat would attack my dog to play fight and my dog knew to play fight in that situation. The cat was definitely more wild and I think she would claw at my dog and hurt her eyes but my dog would chase her and play and have fun. When my dog would lay down my cat would go over and cuddle with her. The other cats we owned were scared of my dog even though she would never ever do anything to them. But a lot of times the other cats would gang up on mine and my dog would come to her rescue and scare the other cats away. She also knew that the cats weren’t supposed to do certain things like claw the furniture and she would bark and scare them away so they would stop. She was the leader of our pets, but knew to obey me and my family. She was the absolute best dog and after owning her I had a big soft spot for border collies. I don’t think she was a purebred, we rescued her, but I think she had a lot of border collie in her. She was such a good dog and if I ever get another dog it will have such big shoes to fill!

Hello, I'm about to introduce my cat to my dad's border collie. How should I do the introductions ? Should I put the cat in a cage first for her safety ? Or would that stress the cat too much ? The Collie has had issues with other dogs before we adopted him but he's now ok with other dogs in parks and plays with them.

I Rescued a BC that is about 8 months old I think. He is just loosing his fangs. He was dropped off in the country & went to a friend's farm. They had a cattle dog he played rough with. When I brought him home, he hasn't stopped his fixation with my older cat. One week now & I'm going NUTS. He is way too rough with my cat. Wants to hit on all of the cat with his paws. Like pound him into the floor. Tries to nibble on him. I had an Aussie who could have cared less about cats. I'm trying to work with him but need some pointers

We have a similar problem. Cat of 3 years old, she accepted the new BC pub well. However, the BC can’t stop fixating on her (even though we got him with 8 weeks; he is 1 now). Already put a lot of efforts in training him to stop fixating her, but as soon as we are not in training mode, everything is forgotten again... how did you train your dog to stop fixating?
@TheDogVlog3 жыл бұрын
Basically at first, a lot of management. She was not left alone with the cat without supervision. Then I would interrupt her behaviour if she started to fixate, by saying something like "uh uh" and/or putting her in an x-pen. After I realized this could be an issue, she was never given the opportunity to stare at my cats. My old roommate's border collie never harmed my cats but had a much stronger tendency to fixate, so he could not be left alone with the cat or he would just sit and stare at them. He would be left in my roommate's room or when we were there to supervise, sent to a boundary, like a mat or a dog bed. Good luck with your pup!

Also depends on the cat if she/he is gonna stop stuff right away. My neighbors border collie Sammy loved cats but not little tabby cat Sassy was a alpha female and she did hiss at her in which poor Sammy looked so sad.

we just got a cat (she is 3 months old) and our border collie who is nine is constantly staring at her and she is very curious, what should we do?
@TheDogVlog4 жыл бұрын
Personally now I would train the dog to lay on a boundary - could be a dog bed or a mat or a specific place that you choose. Give that boundary a lot of value with treats and keep sending the dog back to the boundary if the border collie starts to fixate on the cat. Curiosity can be okay but constant staring can be stressful to the cat. You can put that boundary in an area where the dog can't fixate, even move it around if necessary.

We got a border collie puppy (8 mo old, got him at 6 months) that will play with the cats (We already owned cats, and he does stress them out too much) but will bite the back of their neck/shoulders, not hard, yet at least, but I am afraid this may be a prey response and could progress to harder biting or grabbing them or just that he could hurt them if he gets too rough. Should I be worried or let them continue to play? (My cats DO play with him but he CONSTANTLY wants to chase them even if they don't want to play with him. My fiancee and I have actually argued about it because I'm afraid he may hurt one of the cats, intentionally or not.
@TheDogVlog4 жыл бұрын
Personally, if I saw my dog roughhousing a bit too hard with the cat, I would separate them. Some dogs do have a rough play style. If you think your BC is being gentle then I would pay attention and not let the play get too rambunctious. My young BC loves my 16 year old cat but the dog sometimes gets a bit too "springy" and then I do stop them. If one participant doesn't want to play, that's enough reason to stop the play IMO.
@LinkLove934 жыл бұрын
@@TheDogVlog I am more so worried about his constant chasing them and walking up and grabbing them by the back of the neck. I dont mind them playing so much but it doesnt always seem like playing. His constant chasing and running back and forth through our living space looking for them is a bother but we dont have another room to separate them just his crate.
@TheDogVlog4 жыл бұрын
KatKade One thing you can do is teach your border collie to enjoy being on a boundary, whether that’s his crate or a dog bed or a mat or even the couch. Sometimes they need to learn calmness. I’m going to be working on this a lot with my own dogs so will try to do a video soon. In the meantime even some down time in the crate, preferably with something to chew, can be good to settle him down.
@claracouto6613 жыл бұрын
I loved the video! I have two cats, one is 4 years old and the other just turned 1. at first, my older cat was really stressed out about having to share his territory with another cat and he would hiss and growl, but eventually I got him to tolerate the smaller cat and now they are really good friends (they still fight sometimes tho but nothing to worry about). now, I REALLY want to get a BC but I’m so scared of how the cats are going to react! the older cat is very chill and he usually sleeps all day long, but the younger one is the straight opposite of that. he is not aggressive at all, but he’s so agitated and active all the time that it kinda scares me bringing a new pet friend into the house. I’m actually afraid that they both won’t accept a puppy here bc they’re both males. what should I do???
@TheDogVlog3 жыл бұрын
It so much depends on both the personality of the dog and the personality of the cats. I have had border collies who were very good with cats, but some can get fixated on cats. And some cats are good with dogs, others not so much. If you do decide to get a BC, give them plenty of space especially in the beginning. I keep my young border collie in in restricted areas or sometimes even tethered with me if he isn't in a crate. The cat is good with him but he is a bit excitable around the cat and I want to give my cat his space. If you get a dog that is a bit older than a puppy you could probably get a better idea about suitability for cats. If you purchase from a breeder you can also ask how the parents have been with cats; that may give you an idea. Hope that helps a bit.
@johnw85782 жыл бұрын
I noticed several times that your dog has his tongue out while sleeping or in his bed. Both my BCs do this -- is this a trait of the breed? The first time I saw this with my rescue, his tongue was out (he was asleep) and dry and he was so still, I got scared that he had died in his sleep!
@TheDogVlog2 жыл бұрын
My dog has canines that were turned somewhat inward as a young dog (he needed surgery to remove his baby canines) so I'm pretty sure that's why his tongue is often out. I think it's kind of cute though. :)
